  • Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession. Last month I was lucky enough to drive the new Ford Focus ST, and here's what I thought of it.
    The new car features the 2.3 litre EcoBoost petrol engine used in the outgoing Focus RS, only it's a bit less powerful. Mind you, it's still able to pump out 280hp, with 420Nm of torque, so it still has plenty of clout.
    0-62 time has been cut considerable compared to the old model, with the new version able to crack that speed in 5.7 seconds - 0.6 seconds than its predecessor. It's also the Focus ST that revs the most freely, and it even has an anti-lag system!

    I have a 2006 Ford Focus ST (5 cylinders-225hp), and I love it,... yes in orange. The price of this car, brand new, was 23000 pounds.
    We are just powerless with the price increases.

    The new Focus ST looks a MILLION times better than its nearest rival, the Civic Type R. This is one of the reasons Ford should bring it back to the USA - just think of how many buyers like the performance of the Type R, but can't live with its gaudy, brash styling or 20 inch wheels. For about the same price, this Ford is going to be the class leader in terms of a hot hatch daily driver that does everything better - the best all-rounder!

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  4 года назад

      Hmmm I'll be honest, I strongly disagree that it's MILLION times better, in fact I think the Type R is better. Thanks for watching Daniel.

    • @CarObsession

      To be honest, I'd score the Type R as a 9.5, maybe even a 10, so I'd probably give this a 9. Thanks for watching.

    Awesome review considering the time you had with it!.. Nice work! Deciding between this and the i30N performance.. not sure if you could give any insight between the two? Not many reviewers critique the sound system - did you get a chance to test it out... the interior quality and softer ride along with the sound system has me in favor of this over the old RS. Thanks again for the review mate, this thing books by the sound of it. I’m a fan of the sound in the cabin despite it being piped in 👍

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  4 года назад +1

      Hi Mathew, thanks for watching, and thanks for the feedback. The sound system is good as it comes with B&O as standard. The i30N is also a fantastic car, and it comes with a 5 year warranty which includes track usage 👍🏽. It's cheaper as well, but don't rule the ST out as it's cracking 👏🏽.

      Car Obsession thanks for the reply mate. Cheers, I’m so indecisive. I like my music however the constant popping of the I30N would be a symphony in itself. I’m in Aus and the prices are similar - $45k for i30N and $50K for the ST. Taken the i30N for a test drive and the clutch is so light and smooth. Guess I’ll have to book in a test for the Focus to know for sure. Thanks again, keep it up 👍

      @@mathewharvey6102 I'd like to hear your opinions of the Focus ST's clutch and gear change compared to the i30N when you test drive it, even though here in the States neither car is available at the moment. I think the Focus ST is going to be the better car overall and worth the extra money over the i30N. The i30N is not bad, but I think the Focus ST is going to be better in the ride and handling department

    • @mathewharvey6102

      Daniel LeRoux think you’re spot on! Unfortunately the new Focus ST doesn’t hit the showrooms until June now.. But will let you know what I think. I believe the general consensus from all the reviews I’ve seen indicate the Focus ST is the more planted of the two cars. I believe it will handle better and generally feel a bit more premium in every way. I’m leaning towards the Focus 👍

  • @Cougarsamurai

    It's not cheap but you do get a lot of kit. 20 years ago a fully loaded V6 Cougar was 22k and that had over 100 less hp and nowhere near the kit this has. So 10k more is just inflation I guess.

    Think they’re trying to make the ST span across the likes of Civic Type R’s, but also Golf R and Audi S3 - hence the high price, and also the fact Ford aren’t doing an RS anymore. In your future reviews please can you also talk more about cost on PCP’s, leases etc. As a lot more buyers go down this route more. Good review for a 20 minutes of car time though haha

    In your opinion is the new focus ST better than the current Honda Civic type R?

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  4 года назад +1

      Hi Jonathan, thanks for watching. The ST is fantastic car, but the Type R is better. It's more focused (pun not intended), it handles better, and has a slightly better gearchange. The ST does sound better, though, it's a tad more practical as it's a five seater, not 4, and it has a better infotainment system.
      Bottom line, both are great cars, you can't go wrong with either if you ask me, but the Type R is my winner.

    Can you make your camera angle in your driving test videos lower so that we can see your hand shifting the gear lever? I think that would give us a better idea of how it looks/feels when changing gears. Could you incorporate the better camera angle into your manual car reviews, especially when you do your complete review of the Focus ST?

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  4 года назад

      Hi Daniel, thanks for the feedback. To be honest, if I got the camera angle low enough to see the gear lever my head would probably be cut off as I'm tall (6'2"). Where possible I do film the gearchanges as part of my review. Unfortunately, when I filmed my full review of the Focus ST my camera was stolen so I lost the majority of my footage, and I did film the gearchanges.

    Yes. You're spot on that its overpriced. Not a lot more tech than the previous ST3 model except for the extra bhp of course. If you've added the style pack and camera on the previous ST are you really getting the tech to warrant the extra 5k-6k?? The new ST is coming in at RS type prices and lets be honest its not going to hold its value like the RS does

  • @IronDrummer91
    @IronDrummer91 4 года назад +1

    Think where Ford shot them selves in the foot with the ST’s pricing was having the Vignale and higher powered 1.5 eco boost engines that are the price of the old ST 1 Focus STs. Meant they had to push the new STs price too far to the right
