When my husband passed away I immediately canceled cable TV and saved $100 a month, this last month a new internet company came into the area and I retired so didn't need the highest speed internet anymore so I transferred to the new provider and saved $40 a month . Small steps. I also put cash in envelopes for groceries, I still haven't started using that money for eating out.. which I plan to do soon.
It can be done. I'm living on social security now, so need to save where I can

Canadian here. We don’t have Mint Mobile where I live, but I switched from Telus @ $107 (79 US) to Koodo @ 41 ($30 US). I didn’t get the lowest price tier, but I got what I think I need (20 GB @ 4G speed) and still realized very significant savings. Prepper Princess motivated me to take the plunge. Thank you!

Fellow Canadian here. I've Shaw wifi so I switched my mobile servixe from Fido (was 88$) to Rogers (40$ plus tax) because Rogers and Shaw are together now. So all the discounts made my plan went down from originally 70$ to 40$ and an amzing network. I also got discount for home wifi (was 86$, now 60$ becoz i switched my mobile to Rogers) and this is because of Prepper princess told us to do so❤

We just painted the inside of our house this week....it's been over 15 years. We purchased a new floor lamp to match one of ours. We purchased 2 new ceiling light fixtures too. I really needed your video today!!! Our purchases are all going to be returned. We watched your video and we started talking....I can't tell you what my friends ceiling fixtures look like and I certainly haven't noticed what their floor lamp looks like. We cleaned our ceiling fans and I deep cleaned my floor lamp and shade. They look brand new and work perfectly! Grandma used to say use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. We have to work on our free tv next...that will save us $245 per month. We are debt free but living frugally to make certain our money outlives our needs in retirement and aging. Thank you for your encouragement today! Going to sleep tonight feeling a whole lot better and proud of our job!

In Aus we have 3 main phone providers. Like the US many of the smaller ones piggy back on the major lines. You have to be teal careful when switching as several of the cheaper services don't work outside major cities or suburban areas. Mate mobile works off Telstra network, slashes your bill by 50% depending on your needs 😀

I’ve heard you say that turning off your water heater at the breaker can save lots of money but I never tried it until a few months ago when my electric bill was through the roof. Wow! What a huge difference that has made in my bill! I can turn it on for an hour and it heats up water that lasts a whole day unless I use a lot for some reason. Depends on what climate you live in and how many people in household, but I’m sure this could be a big money saver for almost anyone! Wish I had tried it sooner.

Some of your best advice is to be grateful for what you DO have! You give great tips on how to save a lot of money, but behind it all I hear, "I'm grateful for ___________."; not focusing on things you cannot afford. When you realize you don't need/want or even like those things, and concentrate on the joy of having what is most important to you, you go from victimhood to victor. So many people complain about their situation instead of trying to improve it and to focus on the great things in life we have in this country. Thanks for the positve, practical and encouraging podcasts!

Sorry to deviate;but no matter how many pennies you save on cable, coffee and phone service;the things that are putting people in poverty are ...rent/mortgage/homeowner's insurance/property taxes and health care/insurance/co-pays/medical debt. Those things are mostly out of your control...of course you can budget for it;but what do you do when your homeowner's insurance goes up by 30-40%,like its happening in Florida. And please don't say move to a cheaper location...its happening all overt the country.

I’m in Australia and shop around for house insurance every year:
If you don’t have expensive furniture etc get rid of contents insurance.
On h insurance raise the excess to the highest allowable and cut the value you want your home insured for- this drastically reduces your monthly premium.
If you have a mortgage- ring them once a year and ask for a reduction.

For food, start with buying the store brand (unless the brand is on sale) and buy fruits and vegetables when they are in season (and buy frozen or canned not in season). Cook from scratch (it is healthier). For TV, indeed drop the cable (lots of commercials anyway) and buy one streaming service at a time if you do not want to have to search for free contents. Swap the streaming service if you get bored of the shows that they are offering. Seeing fewer commercials also helps in buying less stuff that you do not need or did not want before you saw the commercial. Most of cost savings are better for the planet as well. If you do not change your buying habits, companies have no incentive to change their products.

Hey PP, I have a suggestion: you should do a video for older women (50 plus) going through divorce and how they can work around their finances. The reason I'm suggesting this it's because I read an article about "gray divorce" (I think it was on CNBC). Basically, it's the time of our lives the children (if you have them) are out of the house and couples get divorced. The premise of the article is, if you get divorced at 32 for instance, it's easier to build a career/finances afterwards. Now, if you get divorced after 50, women get hit harder in their finances, bec work options for women at that age are much more limited. Maybe you will have some advice that would be useful for women going through this.

    • @Coco_Life_
      @Coco_Life_ 28 дней назад

Yes, it was on CNBC, the article's title is: ‘Gray divorce’ has doubled since the ’90s - and the financial risk is high for women

We were overwhelmed with our debt and like you said PP put it off for a long time. Finally that day came and took that first step. We went all in, both guns blazing, total scorched earth. It was just short of 5 years during that time we thought we were miserable. But funny thing once we crossed the finish line we kept our spending in check and maybe even more frugal now and saving/investing 50% of our income which is hard to believe but really it's great to be saving not spending. Our last debt was my truck which was a huge financial mistake but we paid it off a 60 month loan paid off in 26 months. The truck has been paid off for 2 years. Just today I ordered a truck cap for it, really wanted one since I got the thing, saved up the money and paid cash. This is the first thing we have purchased outside of a few home improvements in 2 years. We are taking a 5 day mini vaca in June and I want to take the truck because our car has +200K miles and I would be more comfortable with the truck so the cap will give us a place to put stuff while we travel. It is impossible to improve on the closing statement of this video, that having money set aside and no debt is freedom. Somewhere along the way we lost that being impressed with what other people have, cars homes and so forth. Our home is nice but is literally the smallest on the street but unlike most of those homes ours is paid for.

I’ve been doing new things like learning to make bread and making my own tortillas. Growing, preserving, and preparing food can always be improved on. I want to contact my Senators regarding taxation on second jobs. It needs to be eliminated. I know my state, CT, penalizes a person who works a second job by overtaxation of that income. The reason why people are taking second jobs is because the income they earn does not cover their expenses. The taxation on that income is like kicking someone when they are down, and if they are not down and working a second job, the extra energy they expend by padding their accounts to afford a bigger house, education for their children, or any number of positive attributes and fruits of having a second income should be applauded, not taxed in order to enrich a state employee’s pension plan, which is paid out at a ridiculously high percentage, where a normal, nonstate pension is normally 2%. Feel free to cut and paste this to an email to your own elected representatives!

Hey, you, you wonderful person, I just watched an older vid of yours that reminded me I owe you a big thanks! You gave me the kick in the butt I needed after a few very down years by saying similar to what my dad told me as a kid. "Don't say you can't, not until you've tried and you know you can't." After a few tries, and learning, invariably, we can. Now we have a ten year plan, good insurance, live well within our retirement means, and only keep what we know would cover an emergency on hand. The rest is going into dividend stocks, and while it seems a bit of a reach now, because math is a pain in the arse, who knows in ten years? The thing is, we can. Thank you! 😄

Since companies are no longer appreciative of long term service and continue to dish out sh** pay raises I’m giving myself a raise, my current debt payments total up to about 300$ a month. Once I pay that off it will be 300$ extra in my pocket 💵

I decided to stop investing in my 401k until I get rid of my higher interest debt. It pains me to do this, but it’s also motivating. I developed a plan to use that money to pay off my debts much quicker. I dont get a match and id rather have that freedom sooner.

My new employer doesn’t match for a year. They brought in a financial advisor last week. During our conversation he suggested this very thing. Get out of debt then contribute to 401k. I also have an HSA option. That is actually a better way to save for the future. Max HSA then 401K. More tax free benefits. Going in and coming out. And we all know health care isn’t getting any cheaper.

Get a raise, up goes the rent like clockwork. We found out our old management company was getting OUR free credit reports, one of the three was already taken every damn year we were there. Because when you rent, they have your social, ID and everything. We paid off all our credit card debt and our rent went way up! "Well, you could get a second job" was the answer to my protest. Double triple slavery. 😑

Im not sure where PP stands on this but....I was, by far, the breadwinner. Because it was cheap, I opted for Long Term Disability Insurance ($3.00/mo.) and forgot about it. One year later I was diagnosed with aggressive Multiple Sclerosis. In addition to SSDI, I receive $1200/mo. from that Disability Insurance.

I called to get the internet program that is advertised constantly on the internet for $50/month. They refused to let me wanted me to pay $160 for 45 hours internet with a Hotspot. I told them I will never do business with them. They are cheating people 😒

Compare the ones you have access to in the area you live in. When you know who gives the best deal you can call the one you have and ask them why they charge so much and say that you will change as fast as possible. Usually they will offer a better price. You can always try. I did and they lowered my monthly cost. You can also think about if you really need internet through land line. Maybe it is enough to get internet through the smart phone!?

Well hello fellow CompSci graduate from 2002 (or thereabouts). People complain now but back then working in IT was rough and I had to pivot to working in other fields. Never worked in IT again (but the skills are useful to what I'm doing currently). Love your videos - they always remind me how lucky I was growing up learning to cook and can and sew from my grandmother; and how to fix up what you had to look spick (sp?) and span. I always say to my kids that a clutter free and clean house will always look better than a house filled with expensive junk.

We quit cable 3 or so years ago, best decision we have made. We have a Roku and just love it. We do pay for Frndly tv for the few channels we do like, pay it yearly and save 10 percent for the year. Otherwise we watch a ton of the free channels. We switched phone about 6months ago and cut the bill in half. Just little changes have helped us to put money twoards cutting down our debt.
