Very nice restoration, looks just like new. I have a Boxford AUD variable speed lathe which I use for very small jobs and they are a great lathe, power cross feed, gearbox screw cutting and variable speed at the turn of the handle.
Excellent work! It looks like a new machine. I like where you moved it to. Natural light always is the best. After the start of the new year, check a US company called ZT Fab. They are coming out with vertical QC holder that looks like it might fit well between your door and window.
I’m just about to embark on a restoration of an AUD Alan, so this series is pure gold. I suspect I’ll be going back over it a few times! Did you mark the headstock position on the bed before you pulled it off, and how about a final video on methods of checking the alignment of the headstock and tailstock and levelling the bed. Making sure everything is back in alignment is the one area that concerns me a little with a complete strip down. Great work, thanks!
Hi we measured the headstock overhang to the bed end. Headstock alignment is fixed by the bed ve -guides same with the tail stock. So unless you have the bed reground they can’t be adjusted. You have adjustment on the tail stock which is used for tapper turning.
Thanks for taking the time to reply Alan, it’s much appreciated. I’d read somewhere to scribe the bed to mark where to reposition the headstock, But i think your method is somewhat better!
Great work , how do you know that the headstock is running parallel with the lathe? I have recently bought a lathe and it has had the headstock changed and it’s not true with the bed.
Hi first you must check that the lathe is level when it is put a 1" steel bar in the chuck and machine about 4"" in length. Use a fine cut without altering or adjusting the tool. Then check the diameter at each end if its the same its OK if its tapered recheck level.
Did you have as much fun as I did removing the front of headstock clamp bolt? Could get very little swing with a spanner - I cut a few down to short lengths to undo it
Hi. When we purchased the lathe we split it by removing the bed from the base and loaded it into two estate cars. So it was a simple matter of turning the bed upside down to remove the bolts under the headstock
@@enotsengineering ahh, I enjoyed that series and looked for a video of it in action, I hope to get a boxford oneday and fix it up like you did yours once I've built up enough experience on the little desktop lath

Nice series Alan! I'm almost finished putting together a 1972 AUD....motor and VFD install are the last to do.
An incredible job, the lathe is like new again thanks to the many hours and days you must have poured into this project well done!
Hi James I must state this is my brothers workshop

That helps a lot - anyway great series - good to see how every part works without having to break anything
gearwrench 72-tooth box end ratcheting spanner has *just* enough swing to loosen or tighten it (without modification)
Good job well done, thank you that was interesting.
Thanks for sharing
How gearbox use and thank you
I'm not well to righte
