(Santa, eastern bunny etc are all stereotypes) I grew up with the notion that Zwarte piet was a (descendant of) freed slave(s). Bought free by Sinterklaas. And he didn't just free him and let him be, which would just meant he would die or recaptured. No he gave him a job. (ANd the best job there is, there was nothing I would rather become when I grew up then Zwarte Piet, I was just worry if I could since I ain't black) So, kids think Zwarte Piet is cool/fun/amazing, they want to become Zwarte Piet. It is definitely seen as something positive. That is why I can't agree with lumping it in with black face. That is mainly to make fun of black people. For the Sooth thing, as a very young child you do think (and get told) that Zwarte Piet is black because of sooth climbing trough the chimneys. 1 pet peeve I have is people using "logic" to say they can't be all black because of chimneys so they would look like the Sooth-face. If you do use logic you would see they aren't naked and their clothes would be effected as well!
