      Also every ranking video:
Misleading or wrong. Putting iron in the title just made everything about this video wrong. Australia produces the most iron by far, about 20% of all iron comes from Australia, 10% from Brazil and 4% from Sweden to give some pointers. Their video is only about steel production, not iron and steel as it says in the title.

Costs in the West are high not because of the lack of domestic production but because of the high cost of labor. Average Western person is becoming too expensive for firms to keep their products at a so called 'consumer friendly price' which doens't mean a fair price. Firms (rather/have to) move to others countries with lower labor costs or hire only people who are willing to work for a low salary to keep their products at this 'consumers friendly price rate'. The US GDP is growing at an acceptable rate so there's no lack of production and productivity is mostly being compensated by the influx of immigrants who work for way less. The US can upkeep its primary and secondary sectors due to this high influx of low cost workers even though Western countries are focused on its tertairy sector as main sector. On the other hand higher developed European countries are struggling to upkeep its primary and secondary sectors due to the lack of low cost workers even though there are already a reasonable amount working in the 'higher developed countries' most of them coming from Poland, Ukrain, Spain,
Morocco, Belarus, etc. since Europe isn't that large these people aren't always immigrants, but stay in said country to work and return home for short periods (this way firms can also avoid the social taxes). The more notable becoming problem with Western countries is that the average family is demanding more and more for way too less. We rather consume goods at a lower price who are produced in foreign countries and under bad working conditions then consuming our own domsetic products at the high but (depends) fair price. Our own greed is becoming our downfall but we're too blinded by 'oUr' wealth.
The answer on your statement is, construction cost aren't high because of the lack of production but because construction materials have to be from high quality, high quality materials which are for a reasonable price only found in the domestic market. And specialised construction workers (plumber, electrician,...) are also acquired from the more expensive domsetic market. On the other hand regarding big firms who offer regular construction workers are most of the time low cost foreign workers.

So sad to see Romania falling so hard after 1990... My mother worked at a steel factory in Romania since 2003, as a crane operator and told me a lot of stories from the factory.
Once, in the 90s, happened that a whole train shuttle full with scrap metal for steel factory to vanish. Literally vanish. The train had at least a dozen wagons full with scrap metal and they knew that it shall arrive at a certain date and time, but didn't appear and they halted the steel production for 3 weeks because lack of materials.
And that's how they managed to fuck up the heavy industry in Romania.
