milk crates inverted and stacked make a great drying skyscraper. Put the cut stalk right through and set it and forget it.

Harvesting the alliums is one of the most satisfying things to do in the garden. There is a "hidden treasure" aspect to garlic that appeals to the kid still in me. ☺
Onions and shallots aren't quite as fun because you can see how big they are already, but it's still that same satisfaction. Or maybe I'm just weird that way. LOL
Nice video,. I let an early variety (Montana Zemo) get too far along this year before pulling it and one bulb had a clove that was trying to unfold a green leaf already! And that was nearly three weeks ago! Never pulled any garlic that early before and was surprised to see that. But it has been a dry year here that might be the reason. Have a good time away with the family!

Pulled my 5 dozen garlic Aug 3rd. I cut the stems about 12" and hang them in bunches of a dozen under my woodshed awning. Then, after 2 weeks, I crop the stems and roots and store them in egg cartons in a cool dry place. Beautiful harvest this year in Upper Tantallon.

Cool! I just came in from harvesting my garlic turned on the tablet and there you are harvesting garlic! I went out to put the sprinkler on the last corner of the garden and noticed the garlic was ready to harvest as well. So rather than do supper dishes right away I spent a few minutes pulling garlic.

I pulled my garlic August 1st. I was impressed by the size. It was a great garlic growing year -- at least in central Nova Scotia. Your garden is so neat. Impressive. Eventually, I'll have a neat garden, but not this year.

I love growing garlic. If you do it right you'll never have to buy garlic again for the rest of your life. I'm in the PNW where it's often...shall we say...quite moist...so I cure my garlic pretty much the same way as you. I've got an old refrigerator out in my shop that stays right around 45-48 degrees at the max setting, so I use that as my "root cellar".

First time I've seen garlic yellow. I usually just pull.all my garlic when 30% of the leaves are brown because I need the bed to transplant bush beans. I had a good crop of garlic this year and I'm already harvesting beans from the garlic bed. I also grew the garlic 3 inches apart and 4/5 inches deep this year and they did well. It's a little more work harvesting because I just don't pull the stems without forking the soil a little. I think most would come out without forking but I do it just so I don't break any. You are right that garlic has to be one of the easiest things to grow for sure. Have a good holiday

I pulled my garlic a little over a week ago here in Dartmouth, NS. They’ve been curing in my garden shed and soon I’ll be storing them. I grew 45 heads this year. I’ll keep about 10 to replant in the fall.
With a little preparation, garlic is one of the easiest crops to grow.

Garlic is such an easy crop to grow. And I like not having to baby the seed crop along for months and months (as I do potatoes). No way can it go bad by planting date. Enjoy your family holiday! : )

Your garlic looks so healthy! I planted garlic first time this year, but it quite starved for nutrients, so I may leave it alone, and build the strength of my soil, for better growths next year.

Thank you for sharing... We eat a bunch of garlic and I'm going to plant a lot of it this year.... I'm getting ready to make more garden beds for other things so I can put garlic in older beds that are quite fertile... Do you have an idea of how many pounds of garlic it takes to grow your 200 or 250 garlic plants every year... I ask because thats how they are sold where I've looked, by the pound... I'm in Central Michigan, surrounded by water as well, its very humid here... Side note ; did you know that 4 out of 5 Great Lakes prefer Michigan 😉 lol

Hello from Cape Breton. I had a lot of garlic this year....my garden is only 10 by 20 feet... I envy your space. But I used grow bags for my Tomatoes and Cukes... to save on space.
I planted Carrots twice... they sprouted but disappeared... slugs???? They went after my rhubarb which was easy to see.. but not sure what took the carrots; I planned on being chemical free... but next year those bastards are being fed the pellets.

I had a similar prob with my carrots this year - 1st time ever that I will not get a bumper crop. I don't usually find slugs to be a problem for carrots, but you never know.

Hey Greg, always love the videos, had a question about the size of your garlic. I grew about 110 head of garlic in a 4×8 bed. About 30 of them were very large and good for seed garlic, about 30 were small/medium and about 40 were medium/large. I was wondering how many you plant in a 4x8 bed and of those how many are very large/large/medium/small. This was the most dense I've planted and I'm wondering If I should keep it the same or scale back in that size bed.

    • @maritimegardening4887
      @maritimegardening4887  2 года назад +1

I put about 80 in a 4x8. They are all about 6' apart. The bigger the cloves, the bigger the garlic, all things being equal. Keep saving you big ones for seed & giving them good sun & soil - eventually the proportion of big ones will increase

I'm going to try again this year but plant earlier. I think around Halloween is a good time where I'm located. Last year I put them in early Dec and winter hit pretty early so I think that's what went wrong.
