That keyboard player is INSANE. I thought for sure that riff had to be sequenced, but no, that's all HIS HANDS! Unbelievable, yet the evidence is right there...
In the bio Themes for Great Cities, it comes out that on this particular song and that particular part, MIck McNeil the keyboardist was using techniques he learned playing the ACCORDION!!! He was versed in traditional Celtic/ Scots music.
Derek sets the whole thing up with that growling snarling bass intro. Sound mixer wanted a kick in the pants, cos the keys were a bit too high end. Mind, Mick is ridiculously superior in this performance.
Saw her today in a supermarket, shopping. No bs. It was Muriel Gray. Didn't approach out of respect for privacy, nor will i say where for same reasons. Saw her up close as she passed me by out the shop pushing her trolley. Unmistakeable.
I know a lot about this band and its members. My understanding is that as the band more and more centred on Jim Kerr and the band were "sacked" the more their sound deteriorated. For sure, for a while, they were great. This LP was fabulous.
I wish people on here stop saying they went shit after 1984, because they went more main stream. Yes they did a little bit, but they never crave for media attention or nothing. What about real life album in 1991? Fantastic album. They just do good music because its in their blood.
Excellent quality taken from the Best of the Tube DVD but not in the correct running order which was Hunter and the Hunted ,Someone somewhere in Summertime, this track New Gold Dream and finally the never broadcast but recorded The American watch this space for the final track on You Tube shortly.
Mel Gaynor and Derek Forbes. The best thing about Simple Minds. What went wrong, for me, Street Fighting Years was a mistake and they never really recovered and their large fanbase ebbed away. Thanks for posting. Forgot what a pretentious boot Muriel Gray was!
Tempus Fugit. Everything looks better through my plastic framed rose-tinted spectacles. Will I be wistfully remembering the halcyon days of watching video clips streamed over quaint old broadband in 25 years time... Maybe I already am.
OMG if i want a song to give me an instant flashback to where i was in 1983 and 84, this is it. That record got played to death on my walkman on the bus and train as a 17&18 year old. The latest live versions just seem very lame by comparison.
Your so right darren, what did people expect them to do keep releasing New Gold Dream parts 1 - 2- 3!? I think people tend to look back with rose tinted glasses as they think back to their own youth and how fresh and new everything was. Personally I prefer the original line up but then as a bass player I would wouldn't I! Peace to all
Mick Mcneil ..simply a GENIUS! The "loss"of Mick was a big big problem!probably some of their "works" of wasn't good like the works of 80's era (for me real life so-so,good news good, neapolis and cry not so good) but black and white and graffiti soul are beautiful album!j don't understand why all the media since 91 are against them!for example the last u2 cd's are not so good(j'm a huge u2 fan) but the media are always with them!and for me simple minds are a better live band compared with u2!
@larsodal I thought Once Upon A Time, from 85, was an under-rated album; I listened to it again before Xmas for the first time in how long. No dud tunes amongst it and it hasn't aged that badly either...although it did promo Amnesty International, which isn't a particularly bad thing...
Minds went downhill when Kerr got all political and thought he was Bono. He seemed to take over the band and the others just went along with it, he sacked Forbes and the others bottled it and didn't stick up for him.
Weird! I love this song but I never heard this performance. Seems like the synth riff is out of beat, at least in the beginning...? Or maybe it's Jim's singing that is. Anyway: interesting.
chas is fantastic on guitar but without mac neil on keys the energy is lost.simple minds is a band with guitar, synth, bass, drums and vocals.please reform
@figurehead1971 - sure. Not a U2 fan either, yet Achtung Baby for instance was way better & more creative than anything SM produced those last 20 years IMO. A matter of tastes I guess
They were on a par with U2 for a while. Then something went horribly wrong with them - awful albums, pretentious sermonizing, got fat, disappeared into third league while U2 kept going, evolving, challenging. Too bad, they were the best band in the world up until Sparkles In The Rain.
That keyboard player is INSANE. I thought for sure that riff had to be sequenced, but no, that's all HIS HANDS! Unbelievable, yet the evidence is right there...
He and Derek on bass made the sound
PC revolution will give him full creation...
Yes, M McNiel incredible, they nail this live all the time.. My favourite song ever.....
awesome!!
In the bio Themes for Great Cities, it comes out that on this particular song and that particular part, MIck McNeil the keyboardist was using techniques he learned playing the ACCORDION!!! He was versed in traditional Celtic/ Scots music.
That synth playing is, well, unbelievable!
mick is the music of early minds
"The best band in the entire history of the Universe"...and she wasn't exaggerating!
Derek Forbes, seen him many times live, what a bass player, he is class on this performance
+DAVID MCATEER Aye and i think he's using effects, maybe a phaser or flanger.
I play bass because of Derek.
Simple minds were never as good without him that’s for sure.
According to Derek himself it's a MXR MX-117 Flanger ; the original from the period 1976-1984.
Few bands ever really ever generate this much magic, every member on fire
when going to night clubs was about dressing up , having fun and dancing the night away - exceptional band
That is the sickest keyboard player I have EVER seen.
Best song ever written..Best band ever to grace this planet....81?? How far ahead of its time is this??? GENIUS
Mick is an accordian player. He used that double tap technique on the synth riff.
Not just a studio track. Can do it live....amazing
Totally agree with your comment,I may be biased tho, he's my uncle!
That sweet 80's dancing, sans molly, nice! Jim refining that stage squat, and he only gets lower and lower throughout the years. Great rendition! 😛
Derek Forbes is the greatest bass player of all time. See Hafferson.
Derek sets the whole thing up with that growling snarling bass intro. Sound mixer wanted a kick in the pants, cos the keys were a bit too high end. Mind, Mick is ridiculously superior in this performance.
Let's not mess about, for me this is the greatest song of the 20th century
They were much better than any U2 or other popular bands!!!They had their own style!Simple Brilliant!!!
Better than U2?......Was that suppose to be a joke?
@@Michealsworldcartoon6670Light years better than U2.
They were better than Spandau Ballet. I'll give you that
No joke at all! Just listen!
GOLD MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw her today in a supermarket, shopping. No bs. It was Muriel Gray. Didn't approach out of respect for privacy, nor will i say where for same reasons. Saw her up close as she passed me by out the shop pushing her trolley. Unmistakeable.
Three best versions are this, Kid Jensen, and the official studio release.
Simple Minds, The Spoons, Platinum Blonde, New Order, The Cars......Good music.
they were better than u2 and i still think they are ! simple minds early work is as inovative as you can get !!
Remebering watching this set , just Quality songs , band Musicians ! now we have ....X factor ....my fookin ASS !!
I hear you mate
I loved this album when it came out. Love that the synth is almost the same in this!! Did you see his fingers, made to play.
awesome tune! great performance!!!
excellent vid thanks for posting ,tears welling up when i think back........simple days simple pleasures...total knockout classic
awesome the nearest any keyboards have some to a lick...the sounds he took from the studio to the road at that time were well ahead of the game
Possibly, the most EPIC song ever!!
why does no one big up mick mac neil awesome keyboards.
i have looked long and hard to hear them on this song,.... thanks
best synth of this song is the point, yet this song is the best of synth that I can remember....
I know a lot about this band and its members. My understanding is that as the band more and more centred on Jim Kerr and the band were "sacked" the more their sound deteriorated. For sure, for a while, they were great. This LP was fabulous.
Great song
this is the best of synth that I've seen, guess I just looking for THAT sound
McNeil and Forbes .. the REAL New Gold Dream in this equation!
New Gold Dream still the best 27 years later... come and enjoy the new Someone Somewhere in Summertime's new way on myspace gariac popmusik
@ 1.00 "She's the yin in front of me"
Non Scot's may need a translation !!!!
Class!!
At that point Muriel was right. And then it all went very wrong. But this is sublime. Thanks for posting it.
mick macneil...nuff said.
sinister066 absolutely, this is a short version of my fav song and boy what an effort this is...
What a great performance at the time it was good now it's amazing the tube was a ground breaking show to watch bands
Master on keys
and when you dream, dream in a dream of me! -awesome band!!
agree love song is their best
sicuramente una delle migliori band al mondo
They were pionnier
wooh the keyboards make it something special.. so sad Mcneil couldnt carry on... great days!
They represent the eighties
I wish people on here stop saying they went shit after 1984, because they went more main stream. Yes they did a little bit, but they never crave for media attention or nothing. What about real life album in 1991? Fantastic album. They just do good music because its in their blood.

Absolument Magique...^^
Massive song one of my favourites
wonderful music
Makes me happy i wasn't born in the 80s but just in the 90s.
Mel Gaynor and Derek Forbes. The best thing about Simple Minds.

Tempus Fugit.

Maybe I already am.
they are big in my eyes at the time 1989
Jim and Phil Oakey went to the same salon at that time
and they are still this good live
This is what I remember!!
leebedy71..see you there!!
Cant fucking wait mate!! The whole NGD album, last time i saw them Hunter and the Hunted was the standout tune....amazing!!
These guys are tight!!!
I think the Zorg character in The Fifth Element was taken from Jim Kerr here...
What a band
fab.

that is quality :)
It's the gold standard.

Mick MacNeil, wow ❤
WOW!!!!, i was just about 14yo then, little did i know in 2 yr time my girlfreind be pregarent, how TIME FLIES,
i wanna marry that bass-line
Fantastic need say no more
The absolute pinnacle of 'pop' (hard to fit this into a genre). How the hell did the same band write 'Belfast Child'?
Well she wasn’t far out at the time.
Haha that snare drum sound is such an intersting epic fail!
I agree with the previous poster, this band had it all for a while, awesome albums, then completely lost the plot.
What is mick McNeil like ?!?!?! Unbelievable!!!!!
f^*king awesome! Down edited for the show, but what the heck, cool performance
@larsodal I thought Once Upon A Time, from 85, was an under-rated album; I listened to it again before Xmas for the first time in how long. No dud tunes amongst it and it hasn't aged that badly either...although it did promo Amnesty International, which isn't a particularly bad thing...

jupiter 8!!
Tastierista incredibie
Oberheim OB-Xa... drool...
they didnt go shit after 84 they went shit after 82 when they became U2 lite pity great early stuff
SONIC BRILLIANCE
I don't own a circular device called a "record player" any longer, will have to check out the garage sales....
I thought they went downhill fast after Forbes left
Just look at his fingers on keyboard, that lick must be difficult ti play
jim is bigger than god
Mick , Derek and Mel made this band IMO .
@larsodal im not a u2 fan and i loved SMs but i do agree that something went wrong. u2 believe their own massive hype.
Mick was the best
@RyanMilne22 put us out of our misery and tell us, please!
@ajittffcure
Lucky lucky bastard!!!!!!
that crowd was so wrong...not a clue as to what they were listening..
Sorry, wasn't supposed to sound that harsh.
@figurehead1971 - sure. Not a U2 fan either, yet Achtung Baby for instance was way better & more creative than anything SM produced those last 20 years IMO. A matter of tastes I guess

no backing trackings
