Spanish is not a translation of English.
That, in a nutshell, is exactly what I need to hear, over and over. Put bluntly and plainly. Made me smile, because it's true, and easily forgotten in the panic of comprehension.

@@EricaRayLanguage It was, but only just beating about 7 other takeaways I, umm, took away from your video. You speak very eloquently but plainly, I can see why you're a teacher. You're an absolute natural at it. Making things sound simple is a talent, because we often like to think things are too difficult, and that becomes a way out, which is pretty stupid, but we all do it. But you make it sound like "Actually, that sounds doable!" And of course it is, otherwise no-one would speak Spanish :D And there are 3 year olds in Venezuela who speak it better than I do. :-) Because really it's simple. And I've remembered that because of this video. So thank you again. You've rebooted my enthusiasm.
(I'll be back in a couple of months, and you'll think Antonio Banderas is in the building. Haha. Cheers. :-) )

Yesterday, I learned (from another RUclips Spanish teacher) that Spanish is closer to a direct translation of old English.
      Quite interesting to study.

I have no words to express how appreciative I am for this video. Everything you’ve stated, is exactly what I’ve been experiencing. I’ve unknowingly have been struggling to accept that Spanish is not English lol. I’ve been trying to break down every single word, the structure of it to make sense , and compare it to English, and it’s been incredibly challenging and very discouraging. However, I now understand what I need to do moving forward. I’m sure others have felt the same, but did not know how to exactly express it. By the way, you may be the only instructor on RUclips that has acknowledged this issue people have with learning a different language. Thank you for touching on this topic, it answered a lot of questions for me. Thank you, thank you!

Cuando yo daba clases de idiomas, algunos alumnos se enfadaban por las diferencias, me decían: "¿Por qué habláis tan raro? ¿Por qué tenéis que hacerlo todo tan complicado?" I thank you whole hardly for stating to people that it is unrealistic to not translate in your head from English to Spanish at times when you do have to pause and think at times. Especially when it comes to speak outside of the present tense to subjunctive and imperfect subjunctive, etc. Repetition of speaking the same thing over and over keeps you from thinking English to Spanish.
My 5th to add on to yours is: don't try to use complex words or verbs that you read and will not remember or the person speaking to will not understand.
I could say to my friend who is learning:
me eché a comer instead of comencé a comer.
te echo de menos instead of te extraño.
    a few examples.
No need to be fancy until you have a grasp on natural speaking verbs that most are taught.
    Good stuff!
