Okay.
You are not even sixty seconds into the job, and I noticed three things.
Cinder block stand, bottle jack stand, and the busted knuckle on your left hand.
Working outside in the mud no less.
You, good sir, are a true kindred spirit!
Hoorah for get'n shit done!!
#BuiltNotBought
Started reading your comment and totally thought that you were going to give him a beat down. Cudos.
I fallowed this exact and it works amazingly . I used gear oil instead of grease and it worked out pretty dang good . Tested it out and it works . Welded in the rear spartan in the front . Thanks for the good video
I wonder if I'll have to remove the ring gear with a 3:55 gearing?
I'm 70, gonna wait for spring!
Nothing I hate worse than working outside on a cold day.... I can't wait to have a heated shop to wrench in. Props to you man.
Great vid. I always throw the tires under the car if I fell my jackstands are not on a good solid surface.
I know this video is pretty old, but thanks for this. I really found it super helpful and it makes me feel like i can probably do it myself. I really appreciate it.
Thanks. I was a little afraid of trying but you made it look pretty easy. Thanks again
I gotta 2004 wj dana 30 front. Is this the same locker i need. How do i know how many splines. Thanks
Great video. First time removing/installing a locker and this helped a ton
Thank you for the video. You did a great job of showing what needs to be done. I was on the fence about the locker but you make it look easy.
Trust me if I can do it you can do it 😁
Rather than using grease just use the same gear oil you will fill with, just buy a little extra.
+Pranay thank you for the tip
I know this is an old video but I just purchased one of these and haven’t put it in yet I have a yj with the passenger side disconnect axle with the cable to lock the passenger side axle will this locker still work with that? Or do I need a solid shaft out on the passenger side ?
I've got an open diff on both my Dana 30 & 35. I'm not a mechanic but I've done my share of minor car repairs. Do you think a novice/amateur mechanic could put a locker in them?
Don't you have a bigger Hammer dude?
Try using vaseline isntead of grease when assembing, It blends better with the gear oil
Is that a 27 spline axle?
So the carrier caps just go back in at what torque spec? You didn’t have to set preload and backlash?
On the xj the shims are behind the bearings
The cross pin with the flat spots (for allowing oil to the original pinion gears) can cause TROUBLE when worn it allows the side wedge effect to malfunction. I believe ? The Aussie locker comes with a new shaft that has no oil reliefs. ( needed with spider gear oiling bad for lockers)
I PREFER A SPICER POWER LOCK MYSELF FOR THE REAR END. FOR THE FRONT AN AUSSIE IS NICE. PERSONAL OPINION.
Informative. Why do you like the Aussie over the Spartan? I'm working on a CJ n leaning toward the Aussie. Thanks!
WV sucks lol
Hook'em🤘🏽
"make sure you do not forget these rings"
When did you put "the rings" or spacers back in?
I see them sitting on your bench even after you pull the pins for the springs.
As you know "it's a pain the ass" to get it apart again.
i saw those rings sitting on the bench as well as well after the ratchett gears were installed ... and when i did my spartan ... i had a little truble getting the pin to pass through the rings untill i turned it sideways and used a sma screwdriver to sepperate thoes ringd so the pin could pass through .... Note: those rings are the centering rings that keep the ratchett gear from sliding offcenter ... when offcenter the ratchett mechanism wont work
The rings you saw in this video wasn’t for the install video it’s for a totally different diff I was doing I do more than one I put a lot of these in for people and I always have parts or extra parts laying around
great work, just make sure when installing the pins and springs etc, that you lube them up with gear oil so they are not dry when you finish the job.
besides that, this is how its done.... and axle grease is best to stick everything else together, just do an oil change after the run in period
can you pull the keeper pins out to spread it apart and then put the new cross pin?
Would you please explain why you needed to remove the ring gear from the center section?
It doesn't appear that it was needed to be removed but I don't know for sure!
I had to because of the gearing I had the pin wouldn’t go pass the ring gear so it had to be removed
nicely done mate! talking my dad into getting one or two for his wj
hi Ronnie, could you recommend a locker, I have a 2004 grand Cherokee, dana 30 front, 35 rear, I fish, the only offroad I do is drive on dirt roads to get to fishing areas , or sometimes on the beach, rest of time on road driving.
thanks , Tommy
+tom balistreri I would recommend the spartan locker it's pretty good I would do the front if it's a daily driver the rear will always wanna lock in and pop and bang a lot
I have a '92 YJ. Will that work on it? This is my daily driver. I run 31's in the summer. In the rear I have a limited slip.
The spider idlers exploded on way home from work last summer, so I upgraded.
I have a 91 yj. Dana 30 front. I installed a Spartan locker. But also a one piece axle out of a Cherokee.it always feels locked. I wore out my front tires. Help. I'm almost ready to go back to my split axle.
Sounds like the Spartan locker is out of spec
@@cherokeeronnie does that mean. What?. No good.?
@@cherokeeronnie do you mean the gap. Or something else. I bought it on E Bay . But was in a sealed package.
Did you have problems with the Spartan Locker, and one piece axle?. I did this on my YJ, it felt locked all the time
Specs are wrong
@@cherokeeronnie HELP PLEAS !!
Have you had any problems with the ring gear bolts backing out? I noticed you didn’t degrease them or the contact surfaces between the carrier and ring gear. Wondering because I just installed this locker and made the same mistake and don’t really want to tear it all apart again just to clean and re-loctite everything.
Well? How did it go? TELL US!!
Haha
I just put this same locker in my 1992 YJ don’t understand why you removed the ring gear .
Pin won’t come out
I'm new at this jeeping off road I work in dirt roads and in the middle of no where nm but I was wondering what are good lockers for,the front and rear I have never replaces gears in a front dif would you be able to help me look for what I need
Sorry
You say my specs are wrong, what do I need to check.?. I would appreciate the Help.
You have to check the specs that came with the kit it tells you to what to do hard to explain over the internet sounds like the gears are to tight did you put washers or anything behind the outer locker gear?
@@cherokeeronnie no
@@cherokeeronnie I found them on Google . Thanks for the information
@@cherokeeronnie Sorry to bother you. I still have the locker installed, but I went back to the split axle for now. What is the gap that is measured with feeler gauges? And could thicker oil help?. Thanks
Check your manufacturer specs it should of came with a book
Hey, Does it work on 2010 jk non Rubicon?
he is a real xj owner no garage works out in the weather.
I have heard there are some lunchbox lockers that can be installed on some Wranglers without removing the diff. Do you know which locker(s) and models of Wranglers?
It depends on whether you can remove the pin without removing ring gear. Look at your pin .... will it go past the ring gear if not then you have to remove it
I've watched a lot of videos of putting in a spartan locker. Your the first one I've seen take out the entire carrier to put one in. You know you don't have to take it all out right?
+acedogg692005 yeah on a Dana 30 you do the pin won't go pass the ring gear
Ok, most of the ones I've watched had a bolt and not a pin.
@@cherokeeronnie that happens to me now and I wanna know what I need to do …. The pin won’t go through
Do you have to use grease on the side couplers?
I think you forgot the bush I see him on the table
Will it engage in 2wd or only when in 4x4?
Only 4 wheel
Do you know if a Spartan locker will work on a Dana 30 with 3.01 gears? I heard somewhere I needed to change the carrier.
on the dana 30, the carrier split is 3.55 and down, and 3.73 and up. and that only affect the ring gear, not the spider gears, you should be fine.
Nice job. I like all your advice as you went along.
Hey there man. I'm new to this whole Jeep thing and I'm learning a lot from you. Why swap gears with this spartan thing? What does it do?
+Moving Up Diy it locks the front end so both wheels spin instead of one
@@cherokeeronnie this isnt the case all the time right? Only when one is starting to spin?
@@jamesritter9806
Hi james,
This is a "Detroit " lunchbox type locker and is ALWAYS sending power to both wheels until the vehicle turns. Then it releases so that the wheels are able to rotate at different speeds during the turn.
This video helped me: m.ruclips.net/video/x40WGUtdaLI/видео.html
Fast forward to 22:20
Nice. I am waiting for one of these to arrive, for my rear Dana 44
Why are you not using jack stands to hold the axle??
the jack stands i had right before i started filming one folded over and about crush my hand they were from napa thought they would hold the jeep up i guess not
I installed a rear Spartan on my rig. it is load as hell and bangs around. but it does the job and works flawlessly. driving with one in the rear wasn't as bad as I though it would be. I just coast around corners... can't gun it or it'll lock thheee fuck up! haha
What fluid did you put back in your front diff
Just cheap stuff from the auto store
Does the spartan locker permantly stay locked? How do you engage and disengage? I’m used to electric lockers and looking to go the cheaper route with this xj. Don’t plan on keeping it very long but still want to wheel some.
For the front it only works when you lock it in the rear is a little different
Cherokee Ronnie how does the front lock in? Just by putting it in 4wd?

@@woodywes4093 Thanks man. 3 years later. Still had no clue. But here you are replying with exact seconds to a video explaining it all. You deserve a beer. Thanks for that.
can't wait to install my aussie this summer for my rear D44
its a game changer thats for sure
do you plan to do a spartan dana 35 locker? just got mine and i have no clue how to install it hahah. might be foreced to take it to a shop.
should be almost the same way i swap my dana 35 out for the 8.25
holy heck man! I just saw the WV. where abouts are you from? I was born there but have lived in Colorado most of my life.
Morgantown wv
Sweet. I'm from Spencer, WV.
some saw the cement block and bottle jack. I saw the epic icicle. wow that was the biggest icicle i have ever seen on a jeep.
Pulling up your pants or wearing coveralls eliminates butt crack cold air drafts when working out in cool weather. Additionally...the use of solvent bath in a part cleaning basin or use of brake parts cleaner prior to disassembly sure makes for a nice clean disassembly and reassembly of parts and equipment. And use of vaseline rather than grease on the differential eliminates problems associated with assembly grease and gear oil. Vaseline dissolves in gear oil rather than coagulating up like grease in gear oil
Loved the part with the lock tite... dont go to crazy... ooops... I went a little crazy there lol. Nice video
+Living In A Jeep Wrangler it came out faster than I thought lol
Great job Red!!!Congrats on 1000 subs.....
+dan hambrick thanks man
Good video, keep doing what you like enjoyed your common sense approach
I am surprised you don't mind being on that damp, wet, cold grass! If that is a normal place to work, you should get a nice rubber mat to sit on. I did notice the tarp...all of that is not good for your bones man! lol
sirtubemaster oh I know makes you feel like a old man I just try to imagine im broke down on the trail that's what keeps mind off of it lol
HA HA lol I actually have a rubber mat for the trails too!
why do you like Aussie? not sure of the differences between Aussie and Spartan. I went with Spartan
Colton Doyle to me feels like a little bit better quality but pretty much the same I hear more bad things about spartan but than again a lot of people don't set them up right neither personal preference really
almost a 1000 subs congrats ronnie
+Street N Jeep thanks man
great vid. this realy helped ...thank you
never support a car with a cinder block on its side.no strength.
don't be such a pussy live a little....
@@GozonTheGonsarian
All he is saying is cinder blocks are engineered to have their strength when the "holes" are pointing up and not sideways. We all have to improvise occasionally, doesn't mean we can't improvise with as much safety as possible.
Haha
