    Very much enjoyed this video, and subscribed. I've been collecting the big box sets and just found the one major set missing from my collection which was Spring 1990. Found it at a record store where it had been sitting, according to the store owner, on top of a book case in the store since the day he bought the store from the prior owner a year ago. He had no idea what it was. He thought it was a book sitting up there with a bunch of other music related books and never bothered with it. -- I've never seen the Terrapin Station one up close like you showed it. Will have to look for that one.

    The Landover show (Terrapin Station Live) was different than the Dick's Picks series in the sense that the band had the multi tracks of the show so the show was fully mixed unlike the Dick's Picks which are just releases of the two track, stereo live recording. That accounts for the amazing sound quality. Dick's Picks is not sourced from the multi tracks of the show, just the two channels that came out of the PA.

    • @D-Fens_1632
      @D-Fens_1632 11 месяцев назад

      That's not entirely accurate. Most of the 2 tracks were seperare recording mixes, not recordings of the PA feed.

    As a devoted Deadhead with probably 2/3rds of their entire official output, I'd rank the GD Movie Soundtrack 5-cd set as one of their top-tier collections. The Dead were at the peak of their peforming IMO, the selected cuts are extremely well-played, and I think the sound balance on them is relatively faithful to their live sound at the time as such collections go.

    That Terrapin Station CD set was released as a benefit CD to raise funds for a museum. performance space in San Francisco. that sadly never came to fruition. I believe the reason it remains out of print is because people kinda felt ripped off when the GD got all that money and nothing ever happened. The reason CDs are still being released is because they are cheap to produce and the profit is much greater than LPs. But CDs are going away, New autos don't even come with CD players anymore. You mention "Easy Streaming" that is why Universal Music/Rhino isn't releasing this stuff because once they release a CD then the media is out there for those of you who want this stuff. For me, my favorite years of GD is 69-73. And when they release shows from this era on vinyl then I'm all in.

    The prices people demand for these cd's are outrageously high..100's of dollars. You'd think Grateful Dead productions would always keep these available instead of purposely making only a few, guaranteed to sellout in a minute. Just an "extra disc" from a box set go for hundreds of dollars on Ebay. It's ridiculous and shameful. Making the music exclusive to only the extremely wealthy is antithetical to the Grateful Dead. Pigpen would be pissed off.

    I have the Terrapin Staton set. I think i bought it in 1998. It's not the limited edition one. I have some boxes of dead cd's. A lot of the old Dick's Picks. I think I have the first 20 or so. I have a whole case of tapes from when we used to still record on tape. Dead forever in one way or another.

    Unfortunately there are more CDs that are out print. Rocking the Cradle- Egypt, Nightfall of Diamonds, To Terrapin, Houston , TX 11-18-72, Family Dog 4/18/70, and a likely a few more are all out of print. Most of the box sets and Dave's Picks are limited releases as well, so when they are gone, that is it. However and thankfully Real Gone Music has reissued all of the Dick's Picks and they are working their way through the Road Trips. Road Trips was a limited release so it is nice that they are available again. However most of the Road Trips releases had bonus discs that came with many orders, but Real Gone Music is not producing those. For me personally I like having the CDs. I rip everything to my computer, but I like knowing that along with having a back up hard drive, I have the CDs as well.

    Here's one that frustrates me to no end: As part of the Roadtrips, two full shows were released as download only: Spectrum 11/5/79 and 11/6/79. Even though Roadtrips is widely available for download, these two sets are NOT! (They can be streamed as audience tapes on archives but of course, that is far inferior quality).

    I was never that big of a fan of their 1969 sound so I wouldn’t have bought the box set but thankfully my gf at the time didn’t know that and got it for me as a b-day gift. I’ve learned to love that box set. The jams & overall quality of play from each of the band members is top notch. I consume pretty much everything from ‘69-‘80 & periods of ‘81-83 + ‘87-89. Imo their absolute peak was mid 73 until their “last hurrah” in 1974 -every concert was excellent. I do like periods in 77 & 80 as much if not better but they weren’t consistent like they were before their 1975 hiatus. Taking that break was the worst thing they could’ve done bc that was when half the band lost themselves to severe drug addictions.

    In case you don't know this: The Terrapin set came out as a fundraiser for the Rex Foundation. Even back then, it was fairly expensive ($40 if I recall correctly). So it was part of the promise to buyers willing to cough up the extra bucks that this would be a relatively lavish design as well as a strictly limited release. This may explain their reluctance to make it generally available, even 25 years after the fact.

      The best argument I've heard centers around warehouse space and logistics. With all of the Dave's Picks, Dick's Picks, Road Trips, annual box sets and more, it's just too much for them to keep everything "In Print". So they do numbered limited editions of physical media, and then they can move on to the next project more quickly.
      That being said, I hate that some stuff is out of print and the only way to hear it is to spend big bucks on Discogs or to pirate it. If the Dead were smart, they'd sell high resolution downloads of things that are "Out Of Print" and never have to worry about warehouse logistics for this back catalog.
