William Windom was a machine gunner with the 82nd 508th. A brilliant man who volunteered for the paratroopers. He jumped in D-Day and into the Netherlands. He saw so much carnage that he lived every day after that in childlike amusement. This helped him become one of the greatest actors of the 20th century.
I knew one of these heroes personally......he was my stepfather! And in my eyes, he was a GREAT MAN! His name is John (Jack) S. Nugent! He was seriously wounded in "Market Garden"! Soft spoken, gentle and kind unless you tried to ask him about the war! He then became enraged and would refuse to talk about it! The war had a profound effect on this kind man, as I'm sure it did on many veterans, but he never lost his humanity or his humility! He showed me what it means to love your country, a true Patriot! RIP KIND SIR!! You are sorely missed!!!!!
My uncle was in the 504PIR - 3rd Battalion "I" Company. They missed "D" Day having just returned from the battle at Anzio and needed to refit and take in replacement. They did however participate in Operation Market Garden in Sept. 1944.
Great Americans every one a hero! War is hell sometimes a man must pass thru hell. We should never forget the battles and wars fought and especially each and every soldier that served to keep America free god bless them all.
1975 my husband was in the 82nd airborne we were in fayetteville NC those were my favorite years we had nothing the a baby boy who is now a first lieutenant in Navy . Im proud of all these young men Ww2 and on up.
My father, may his memory be a blessing, dropped into St. Mere Eglise on D-day. He was 82nd airborne. Don't show us the damn 101rst. This has nothing to do with them. He wouldn't talk much about combat but said, "you don't want to know". The old videos are sacred to the memory of those men. I'm always looking to see him in one of these videos. So, far, haven't found him. Too many historian blabber mouths and re-en actors.
1st lt HQ co father was @ la fiere. it's where he learned how to charm your pants off or make you shit 'em. he had 'yes sir' forearms. scary dude. haunted by lost friends for 50 years. never a bitch or a boast.
