  • If you have a child Canada, there are two types of benefits, which are maternity benefits and paternity benefits. Maternity benefits are only for those who are pregnant or have recently given birth. Paternity benefits are for the parents of a newborn or adopted child.
These benefits are not just for the parent who has given birth but are for both parents of a newborn or adopted child. Some of these benefits are also available for surrogates.

So basically, if you decide to take paternal and maternity, standard length this is 50 weeks , however a year is 52 weeks, so the government doesn't cover a year off, if covers up to 50 weeks. Correct?

Hi dear, thanks for the information, it’s really helpful. I have question though, when can I apply for sickness benefit? Can I apply one months before I gave birth or after I finish my maternity and paternity leave?

Would you happen to know if I could take the maternity leave and go out of the country and still receive the payment?

What does insured hours mean? My girlfriend is an hourly worker and is 19weeks pregnant and had to take time off from work early due to a covid outbreak in the seniors facility where she works at, what steps can she take to get some financial support for the weeks she didnt get paid and how could she get started on maternity sick leave or sickness leave? Does a covid outbreak constitute emergency medical or sickness leave? Sorry for all the questions a d thankyou for your time.

Great Video! But I do have a question. This is for my sister I’m speaking for. She’s wants to work to her fullest and while her body can take it. But however per say; can she obtain the maternity and parental leave at the “SAME TIME” after birth. One is 6 months and the other is 12 months. Are we able to merge it both or obtain both at the same time. I tried looking up on service Canada website can’t seem to find the answer to this

I work about 50 hours per week. Am I able to work some hours per week to complement my income without losing the paternity benefits?

if both parents share their maximums of both maternity (mother) and paternity (mother and Father) the father can apply for an extra 8 weeks resulting in total of 84 weeks combined but only at the same overall amount. my wife and i both enjoyed this with out last child.

Mind boggling how North America does not mandate employers to give paid maternity and paternity leave.

If employed in Canada, you pay into Employment Insurance and it is used for payed maternity leave. An employer cannot stop you from taking the time off.

You are very Incorrect. No one gets Maternity leave within Canada if you have not worked and paid into Employment Insurance Benefits. If you dont, you get Zero paid Maternity Leave
