    “Do one thing that scares you everyday.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt~ This quote swims through my head a lot as we work on the house build. Oftentimes, I laugh as I think of it, and wonder if I’m earning a stockpile so I don’t have to do as many scary things as I grow old. Because there are some days on the build where we do more than one scary thing.
    What scary thing are we up to this time? We are installing our FINAL doors. They are our BIG sliding glass doors. One thing stacked against us is that they are so heavy and there are only two of us. The other thing stacked against us is that we have to get each sliding glass door OUT of the house on some sort of platform to install it correctly. We get creative, end up with a little bit of help from a friend, and we push through our feelings of self doubt to make it happen.
    And even though I really dislike doing all of these scary things in the moment, we both come out of them feeling stronger and more confident in our abilities. Maybe Eleanor was onto something.
    For those of you that are curious. To get from laying our sill plate to installing our final door, it took us 5 months. We still have soffits to do and window trim and caulking, but when we look back and see that it only took us 5 months to get to this point, we’re pretty dang happy!
    And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on RUclips. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 9 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
    Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
    In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the summer of 2022. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
    Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

    My dad worked construction his entire life. It was nice having his expertise when I did jobs around the house. He always laughed at me and said I was wound as tight as a three dollar watch. I wanted to make sure things were correct and ready to go when he arrived. Not a panic or anxiety attack, but close. He would calm me down and remind me we could only do, what we could do. You make your plan and do what you set out to do. As soon as you worry about what might happen, the things you want or need to happen slow down or don't happen. You guys took on a hell of a task. You doing fine. Some things are hard, you work through them. BTW...The doors and window look fantastic!

    hello dear people, I've been following you for a while now and think it's very brave what you do with just the two of you. I saw your panic up there with those big glass doors (and even though I know it went well) I also felt that uncertainty. but it all looks good. looking forward to the next video. OMG! I have just spent my entire Saturday afternoon\evening (now early Sunday morning) watching all your videos. I should have been working on my camper, but I am from the NW and have been looking to buy some property and move back up there to do something off-grid in the very near future. I think I would be happy with the yurt, but you all are really inspiring. Just goes to show how the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. I wish you all the best and congratulations on the major milestone.

    • @airlandsea
      @airlandsea 2 года назад

      @@OneFootOfftheGrid That's a tough question, but I'm watching mostly to learn. So I'd say the yurt episodes were among my favorites. And I was already planning on the bucket method once I get my camper done and hit the road (hopefully by Summer) so I enjoyed the reassurance of those episodes too.

    Wow
    One more step forward.
    Most of the people I watch building their own home like you , feel so relieved when they get to the "dried in" phase. Everything thing else seems to go much faster.
    I remember in some past videos Sara was so down over the seemingly daunting task to the point of crying in front of all of us
    It's good to see her smiling again.
    I'm excited for both of you.
    Can't wait to see the happenings of the inside work.

    Ryan, Just a couple of points I noticed, I did wonder why you were burning scrap wood outside, when it could have been used in the wood burner to heat the house. I hate to bring up old comments, but sometime back, I mentioned installing angle iron in the door openings, which would have helped maintain the wall planks in plumb. Congratulations on getting finally dried in. Well done everybody. Regards Robin.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад

      Our wood stove manufacturer recommended not burning treated or laminated wood. Angle iron would have been a good idea or even attaching the bucks earlier in the process. Sometimes the only way to learn is to make mistakes unfortunately.

    Why do you guys never use the tractor an forks to help move stuff and make platforms

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад +1

      We do use it when it is safe. With the sliding door we weren't sure if the tractor would be stable enough and the forks are only the "clamp on" variety. Building the temp platform meant I could walk on it as well as put the door on without having to worry. I am looking to pick up a real set of forks for the tractor soon and I'm sure I'll get a lot more use out of them then.

  • @johnnelson8956

    That flashing tape isn't doing a bit of good they way you installed it. You should have followed the contour of your logs to get a good seal. I would have used a liquid flashing. You should really think about re-doing that flashing.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад

      We were worried about this as well. What we ended up doing (per our manufacturers suggestion) was getting it as close as we could to the logs. Then the trim was put on. Then we applied spray foam in the gaps. Then We sealed it all up with caulking. You’ll see it in the next episode (most likely).

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад

      Soffits go in on next! Unfortunately, half of our roof only gets them because the other half will attach to a roof that forms a covered deck. I could see a squirrel trying it out but not a raccoon . . . But you never know. I’ve actually been surprised that we haven’t found raccoons under our house yet, but most of the time we keep the window well entrance closed.
