  • Sgt James Allen Ward was an RAF pilot in WW2 who won the Victoria Cross when he climbed out onto the wing of his Vickers Wellington bomber to put out a fire.
Having dropped the bombs on the target, the pilots; Squadron Leader Reuben Widdowson and Sgt James Allen Ward turn their Vickers Wellington towards home. Unfortunately, as they cross Holland, the Wellington is attacked by a Messerschmitt BF110 night fighter.
In the Wellingtons tail turret, despite being hit in the foot, Sgt Allan Box returns fire and manages to shoot down the Messerschmitt.
With numerous failures and the right hand wing engulfed in fire, Sqn Ldr Widdowson orders the crew to bail out. The co-pilot however has other ideas. Sgt James Allen Ward volunteers to climb out onto the wing and put out the fire with his bare hands!
As a result of his actions that night in 1941, James Allen Ward became the first of just 3 New Zealand airmen to win the Victoria Cross in World War 2.

I'm sorry for the sketchy audio everyone! I have a new mic on order and will make sure the quality is much better for the next video! I hope you enjoy this truly remarkable story despite the audio quality!

Thank you so much for bringing James Ward VC's story back to life. Sadly, the homeland of this humbles School Teacher has been all but forgotten. My hope this becomes a gentle reminder.

This reminds me of a very similar story. Flight Sergeant Norman Cyril Jackson, whose Lancaster was attacked by a night fighter, he climbed out onto the wing with a fire extinguisher to put the engine fire out, the night fighter returned and attacked again to which he then fell 20,000 feet to the ground with a damaged parachute. He was also awarded a VC.

Hi Andy! Very true! I think Jackson even made a few escape attempts after was captured too! A well deserved VC! The bravery of these airmen is mind blowing!

This is why i love this channel he tells the stories that you normally won’t find any where than here and not in the amount of detail as these videos by far one of my favorite history channels.

Thanks Unkwon! To me it’s the small details that make these stories so interesting so I try to include as much as possible!

Incredible story, for those who dont know it every Victoria Cross is made from a bronze cannon that the British captured off the Russians during the crimean war. Their is only enough bronze left to make about 75 more VCs so they are very careful who to give one to!
