one thing he was wrong when he said the US did not de-mobilize after ww2- US military reduced its military power by 90% After WW2- It was the Korean War that caused major re-mobilization. The US Army was smaller before Korea then it is today- and this is with a more manpower intensive military. The mass demobilization of the US military After world war two is critically linked to the Atomic bomb- since the US military leadership in the Air force thought that mass armies and fleets were unnecessary in a post atomic era thus the Army was reduced to a level useful only for basic occupation of Japan and Germany and not much else. this is why Korean war was such a crisis early on- the US Army was not prepared for war.

One interesting aspect to this that I’d love to see you cover, was that of The British Empires reaction to the emergence of the U.S as a new western superpower. Apparently they weren’t too happy to just hand over the position of world leader to their war time ally. The British Empire was actually seen by some after the war as a third super power (including the Soviet Union) as it had been on the winning side of two world wars and was also at its greatest territorial extent, not to mention the history of the pax Britannica.

I like the clear labelling of post WWII America as an empire, because it clearly fits. "Empire" is a political term for a certain form of political organization, not a moral one. But the term clearly helps to understand future actions of the US regarding a re-emerging China.
yo man , that transition thingy till 0:59 , and soecially that reflection of atomic bomb is so damn interesting , inspiring and such a invention sort if thing , props to the animator
Griff underestimates the strengths of the US economy. The US remained a net exporter of oil up until 49 (see brain4breakfast "Blood and Oil" for the importance of energy), this was something that none of its allies had. The manufacturing industry allowed unskilled labour social mobility, the same boom occured later when these jobs were moved to Japan and Taiwan (and now enjoyed in China) in all of these countries manufacturing jobs allowed for a golden age that is remembered until this day in much the same way as it is in the US. The US financial market recovered much earlier than the rest of the economy - allowing startups the access to seed capital, a good comparison is when during the space race Nasa could allow subcontractors live and die based on their merits the soviets found that they simply lacked the neccessary infrastructure in a lot of places (N1 used a lot of small engines instead of a few big ones for this reason) and had to make do with the few existing "engineering offices" they had, all the while the US could rely on contemporary Elon-Musks to ruin themselves financially and mentally for a chance to develop the economy(For a comparison of w/ financial market vs w/o please check AlternateHistoryHubs "Argentina" video)
You've come such a long way with not only the animation, but the information you provide. Thank you for being a better history teacher than any public school could offer.
The production and educational value of this video is fantastic. The only thing I would critique is at 10:25 - the US actually did demobilize most of its troops and equipment from 1946 to around 1952. There was a point where US naval vessels went from several thousand in number to less than 700. The Air Force mothballed and scrapped most of its wartime-era planes and most experienced NCOs and Officers were let go or left the service, which is why US troops fared poorly in the Korean War when the Chinese counterattacked. Only with that conflict and the election of Eisenhower did the military begin to rebuild again. As an aside, the US was so disarmed and seemingly uninterested in being a global protector that the precursors to the EU and NATO began in Western Europe, and the US only joined and took leadership of the organization later on.
No you're absolutely right. America's power didn't come about because of WW2. More so, the interventions were possible because the US was a super power not in order to make the US into a super power.
The United States became the largest economy in the World in the late 1880's. Massive in territorial size, mineral resources, agricultural capacity and a massively growing population that was almost homogenous (white European and overwhelmingly Christian). It was literally inevitable for the United States to become a Major World power (if not a Superpower) in the 20th century. The Spanish-American war was simply a newly empowered nation, flexing its muscles and realizing their potential.
@@jasonrichter2671 After the USA took all the territory from Mexico, it got a lot of resources. That helps a lot. And during the civil war a lot of technology was developed. New guns, new canyons, new war ships and new tactics. The war with Spain was only a try out.

Paraphrasing, but the statement: “Roosevelt’s ‘New Deal’ paled in comparison to the effects of America entering WW2” is a statement of honesty’s lot of people leave out...
Yeah, similar to criticising Caesar militarily, it's like some forbidden dogma to say that the New Deal just wasn't the magic wand everyone thinks it is today. Not that it was bad or anything
Ok. And the error in logic you've made there is taking the statement 'X was better (more effective) than Y' to mean Y was bad. The New Deal certainly did help - and it also created a number of programs created by it still exist today.
"It’s ridiculous to talk about freedom in a society dominated by huge corporations. What kind of freedom is there inside a corporation? They’re totalitarian institutions - you take orders from above and maybe give them to people below you. There’s about as much freedom as under Stalinism" - Noam Chomsky
Someone needs to tell Chomsky that corporations don't really care what you do in your personal life as long as it doesn't make them look bad. I've never heard of a corporation trying to tell you what religion to follow, who to marry, how to decorate your home, what to eat, or who you can vote for.
@Rithvik Muthyalapati You cant thank just one person lol. The U.S. has the most defendable geography on the planet. They haven't had foreign troops on their soil in 200 years. Even during civil war! The U.S is an ocean away from any real threat. Compared to the next biggest power china who is surrounded by enemies. They've been at war with every country on every border and bearly held their own. They couldn't even harass American shores if they wanted to. Hitler abandoned an invasion of Great Britain because of that 21 mile strip of water. No way he would have conquered the world. The U.S can muster more resources than anyone else. They have the perfect seasonal climate to make so much food they half to export it around the world. Only the U.S. can perfect and utilize such a complex technology as fracking, producing more oil than anyone else. They have significant populations on the Atlantic and Pacific and can move these goods easily coast to coast. The U.S has 14,000 miles of navigable riverways, China only has 2,000 miles and their main food rice is tremendously labor intensive it takes 9x as much man power and to produce than wheat or corn. They have no oil. they half to import everything. All this and more in "the accidental superpower"
Bullshit statement from an ignorant person. USAs economy took decades of industrial policy to create. The country had the highest standard of living in the world when World war 2 started. And Americans had a higher standard of living than Europeans already in the late 1800's- And that it thanks to protectionism that allowed the country to industrialize without getting its industries smashed to pieces from foreign competition the same way that other colonies like South America and India got their smashed by industries in their motherland. USA got rich while other colonies or former colonies didn't.

I like the clear labelling of post WWII America as an empire, because it clearly fits. "Empire" is a political term for a certain form of political organization, not a moral one.
But the term clearly helps to understand future actions of the US regarding a re-emerging China.

Who is really underestimated are Korea or Cuba. US is just taxtaker
You've come such a long way with not only the animation, but the information you provide. Thank you for being a better history teacher than any public school could offer.
" The woman in the iconic Great Depression photo was Florence Owens Thompson."
Teddy Rosevelt was the one who put America on the map.
I would say that America’s rise to becoming a super power goes all the way back to the Spanish-American war not just post-WWII but that’s just me.
Look up the grand area concept and the planning for a post war world
As someone from a country that shares a border with the US, it's been always weird how an average country gets entangled so much with the actions of a superpower

Also ignores there was another recession in 1936 during the new deal and before the war
Angry AOC noises.
Ok. And the error in logic you've made there is taking the statement 'X was better (more effective) than Y' to mean Y was bad. The New Deal certainly did help - and it also created a number of programs created by it still exist today.

Read "the accidental superpower" It's all geography, demographics, and technology
@Rithvik Muthyalapati
You cant thank just one person lol. The U.S. has the most defendable geography on the planet.
And Americans had a higher standard of living than Europeans already in the late 1800's-
And that it thanks to protectionism that allowed the country to industrialize without getting its industries smashed to pieces from foreign competition the same way that other colonies like South America and India got their smashed by industries in their motherland.
USA got rich while other colonies or former colonies didn't.
