  • Ms Esther Chetachi Nwokoma from Nigeria experienced severe breathing and speech problems with a tracheostomy due to tracheal stenosis. After unsuccessful treatment attempts in Nigeria, she consulted Dr Suhel Hasan, Senior Consultant, ENT at Narayana Health City, Bommasandra, Bengaluru, for her medical treatment.
Following a severe accident in 2021, Esther experienced unconsciousness and had difficulty breathing, along with multiple injuries to her legs. She was taken to the ICU and placed in an incubator for ten days. After this period, she continued to have breathing issues and spent a few more days in the ICU. Upon discharge, she experienced persistent difficulty breathing and coughing with blood (sometimes).
After a month, doctors in Nigeria performed a tracheostomy, although initial assessments did not identify any issues. However, Esther continued to complain about her symptoms, which led to a CT scan and subsequent tracheostomy. For the next two years, she relied on the tracheostomy for breathing and was unable to speak. Despite undergoing serial dilation procedures six times, her condition did not improve properly, and the medical staff were unable to determine the cause of her symptoms.
Based on a recommendation for open neck surgery, she decided to seek treatment in India at Narayana Health. In addition to her breathing issues, she was diagnosed with multiple fractures in her femur and lower ribs. She is still undergoing treatment at Narayana Health, where multiple surgeries have been performed, and her tracheostomy tube has been successfully removed.
Dr Suhel Hasan said that the patient suffered from an accident three years ago, resulting in multiple fractures in her leg. Since then, we have been treating Esther with various surgical procedures. Currently, her neck, breathing, and voice are functioning well. Esther developed severe tracheal stenosis above the tracheostomy tube, leading to complete obstruction. We performed surgery to remove the affected part of the trachea and successfully removed the tracheostomy tube during the same procedure. She is now able to speak and breathe normally.
Esther is continuing her treatment in Bengaluru, including additional procedures for her leg. She can now bear weight and is showing significant improvement in her condition. We hope she will begin walking soon and achieve better health and wellness.
