    One thing I did was use tamiya glue to smooth over the cuts in the crystal.

    some crystall also tend to cluster in varying size on the same matrix. so could be a good method to use some cheap crystals, like himalayan/sea salt or sugar in various sizes around the bottom of these bigger plastic ones. not sure how well salt/sugar takes paint though :P
