Story might be a bit hard for English speakers to follow, here's the Wiki plot description (doesn't spoil the end): "As springtime begins to break up the ice on a frozen river, a handsome young novice monk rescues a naked girl who has apparently fallen into the water. She disappears suddenly, but returns time and time again over the ensuing months-first demonstrating her dolphin-like swimming ability (and her surprising technique of catching fish in her teeth!) and then winning the young man's heart with her coquettish flirting and beautiful singing. The young monk's elderly master comes to understand that the rusalka is actually the drowned spirit of a girlfriend he himself had loved and betrayed as a youth, and takes steps to protect his naive apprentice from her supernatural revenge. But when the mermaid recognizes the old monk as the man who had once jilted her, it may not be the young apprentice who is in mortal danger."
I saved this video almost 10 years ago n today found it again. It's amazing, beautiful... honestly, i can only imagine all the time and work that this needed to be done Thank u for the upload!
Russian word "Русалка" have 2 values: 1. Old - mean "Elemental Spirit(usually water), looks like a girl with long flowing hair" 2. New one, westerned - mean "Half-fished woman" So english word "Mermaid" ALWAYS translated as a "Русалка"... BUT Russian word "Русалка" can be translated as a "Mermaid", yes. But only if it mean "Half-fished woman"... Current video show not a mermaid, its show "woman-like water spirit from old slavic legend". In that case - right translation - "Rusalka"...
in russian folklore oftentimes Rusalkas were spirits of drowned young girls but they were meant to be evil though. The idea of Rusalka varies from region to region. Some myths depicts them as sort of Nymphs.
Quelle merveille! Tout devient très beau : les personnages, la nature, l'isba. Tous les mouvements ne sont que grâce. Merci Monsieur Alexandre Petrov et merci Amalokch
Correct, sir. There's a bit of subtitle during the marriage scene (basic marriage rites) and when he is praying for salvation after seeing the Rusalka. Other than that everything is just basic prayer and folk singing. There is no dialogue.
@Singularbeing Mermaid is a aquatic creature with a female human head and torso and the tail of a fish. It close to sirens. Rusalka is soul drowned girl who became spirit. Rusalka looks like a human without an any fish parts. Rusalka can be a tree spirit as well as water spirit, so she can live on a trees (but close to water). Rusalka mean "The girl with long brown hair" in russian.
Is there any place where you can watch this film with Eng subtitles? I went to a few subtitle websites but I couldn't find anything, not a public torrent too.. This looks right up my alley (as somebody else said - Tarkovskian too) and I loved his other shorts, so I'd really love to understand this one. If any Russian speaker could make a subtitle file for us, that would be very appreciated, спасибо!

I just realized it now that it's like as the Ilawod movie here in our country, Philippines. But the water entity in Ilawod doesn't seek revenge as she was betrayed by her lover, she is just vengeful
Hermoso. A mi hijo pequeño le gustó, pero no la quiere ver de nuevo. Me dijo que le da miedo. Es cierto se maneja con eso de la culpa y de los deseos que no terminan de cumplirse.
The song is called "Разлилась - разлилась речка быстрая". The song is about a girl who drowned in the river. Her brother came to the river bank and there he saw his drowned sister. And she asked him not to walk along the shore, since the shore is her body, not to trample the grass, since the grass is her hair, not to kick stones, since the stones are her eyes, and not to drink water, since water is her blood. ruclips.net/video/VxvO7DaZRq0/видео.html

The boy find a girl in the lake (I dont know), and then they play together until each other close, and then the father heard a voice of girl that make him blow his mind remebmer his past that the fathet was with (same) type of the girl (I think), but the father not maried with the girl that he close with in the past, make the girl heartbreak, and then he chaught his son playing with a same type girl in the lake and the bla bla bla
At the end the boy run away from his father want to meet the girl in the lake, and his father tryn to find him, he already meet the girl in the lake but there is a storm making the girl and the father died, but he save, so he build a graves for both (sorry my english:'v)
What a load of CRAP! Where did you get that? I'm a native Russian speaker and must say that this is the first time I hear such definition of the word "Rusalka". Utter nonsense! Rusalka = Mermaid, Mermaid = Rusalka (PERIOD)
As Cleese would say, "Yes, well, of course, this is just the sort blinkered philistine pig ignorance I've come to expect from you non-creative garbage." This short film is a brilliant *masterpiece*!

Genial! Pero, qué tipo de técnica es esta y, mas que su nombre, cómo funciona?

es acuarela sobre cristal
No, es definitivamente óleo sobre cristal ¿de qué manera se podría pintar con agua sobre una superficie impermeable?

Isn't a rusalka usually tied a to lake river or stream while mermaids are ocean based.
