The reliability of this system could be increased if they faced aft and measured the ram vacuum. Furthermore in addition to heaters, a compressed air line hooked up to the system could be implemented to purge a potentially blocked pitot. Maybe even a hybrid system of ram pressure tubes and ram vacuum tubes? Bugs, tape, dirt, and ice shouldn't be killing people!
Hi Rineesh! If only the drain hole is blocked it shouldn’t have a significant effect on the instruments, at least at first. However, if the drain hole is blocked for too long, it may be possible that moisture and debris collect inside the pitot tube with no way to drain out, eventually blocking the pitot ram air input and causing erroneous airspeed indications. The only time the drain hole blockage has a significant effect is when it’s combined with an inlet closure. In fact, some aircraft have pitot tubes that don't have drain holes at all! Keep your Pitot heat on if you have one, most blockage comes from ice or water build up.
