  • Jack Brickhouse was a jack of all trades. From car shows to conventions, and from Popes to presidents, Brickhouse interviewed just about everyone and covered just about every kind of story.

Why doesn't Wrigley Field have a statue of Jack Brickhouse? For forty-one years, from 1940 until 1981,
he covered the Cubs while nine U. S. Presidents served. Brickhouse should have been the Cubs personality
honored with a statue at the Friendly Confines.

You forgot one no-hitter he called: Joe Horlen's no-hitter for the White Sox in September 1967. Brickhouse helped the White Sox stay in Chicago in the late '70's when Bill Veeck bought them again. He has quite a few fans among the South Siders.

I have to admit that sometimes I would get a bit embarrassed by Jack for some of his comments. Once he was commenting about the record of a Cub's pitcher whose name I can't remember. Then he mentioned the name of the opposing team's batter he would be facing whose last name was identical to the pitcher's. He followed that by politely adding "no relation" since the pitcher was Caucasian and the batter was African-American. I loved the man for that kind of sportscasting brick.
In the late 60's-early 70's I would take my very young son (under 5) to home games often. We liked to sit under the scoreboard with all of the old guys who knew a thing or two about everything Cubs. One time we arrived at the concourse landing below the broadcast booth just as Jack was climbing the ship's ladder up to the booth and already a few steps up. He turned and saw my little boy, stopped and came back down to speak with him from where he could see him better. My son recognized him from watching the games on TV with me and was delighted that Mr. Brickhouse "knew him". What a class act that man was except it was not an act. It was real. God bless you in baseball heaven Jack.

Jack Brickhouse could do it all.
I used to live five blocks away from
Wrigley Field. Baseball/wrestling/ football/ basketball you name the sport he could announce anything.
They gave Harry CAREY the flowers
    FIRST.
WHERE JACK SHOULD HAVE HAD HIS STATUE BEFORE HARRY& HIS SIGNATURE CATCHPHRASE AFTER A HOMERUN HEY, HEY. HE WAS JUST CHICAGO ICON AS FAR AS SPORTS ANNOUNCERS GO
