one thing that is not talked about much is carmelo actually has one of the best and mechanically "correct" shooting form. you can see in slow motion that his left hand is never involved in shooting the shot, he has a high set point but still in front of his forehead and not on top or behind, which allows him to elevate the shot from his set point straight up and create a lot of arc in his shot. (meanwhile, players like kobe actually has the set point closer to the top of his head so their shooting motion is more like back and out, instead of down and up, resulting in a more bananna kind of arc instead of brainbow kind of arc like carmelo has) thats why when he makes a shot, he most likely going to switch it, because the drop angle is high enough making the surface area of the rim bigger...of course, being extremely strong and tall also helps. he also shoots like ray allen, his jumpshot is consistent and he doesn't have "2 jumpshots" like many modern players have. it is said that many modern players shoot 2 motion when they are close to the rim and and shoot one motion when they shoot the long 3. carmelo and ray allen are consistent, they always jump straight up, and release at the peak making a consistent high release.
carmelo is clutch at times, but even though his mechanics is perfect, he is not a famous clutch shooter, this has to do with the way he approaches practice. ray allen for example, during practice he mentally places himself in those clutch moments, and then he goes through the motions. for example the game 6 shot, it is reported that he has been practicing for this scenario since his days with the bucks, however most players are focused in shooting the shot but not the circumstances. but this is not an attack on melo, he has his share of clutch shots and is one of the greatest to ever play this game, i just want to point out his mechanics is perfect and should have allowed him to be a greater shooter than we remember him for.
