    Another depressing detail/interpretation of mine: when Burrito is about to be eaten by Armin, he turns to the gang and cries out for them to help him. Which seeems weird until you remember that they were friends and comrades for 3 years, and enemies for only a couple months.
    In this moment he wakes up, doesn't know whats happening except for the fact that he's about to be eaten, and thinks "Those are my friends! They'll save me!" And then the realization dawns on him, and he can't do anything but cry out for the last two people still by his side, as he is eaten. Felt so bad for ol Burrito when i realized this.

    About the title "Midnight Sun", in March 2018 Isayama himself answered what he meant by it:
    *****
    "Midnight Sun refers to the phenomenon where the sun doesn't set and it remains light even at night. The idea is that with Erwin's death, the sun may have set… or rather, it hasn't set, carrying the meaning that even after Erwin's death, his influence lingers on. (In other words, the sun doesn't set.)"
    *****
    So, originally Erwin is meant to be the sun, but the sun doesn't set, with Armin carrying his ideas.

    11:37 Worth mentioning that in the Ilse Langnar OVA, Hange almost gets Oluo killed by a Titan just because she wants to capture it, thinking that it would be a great asset to humanity if they could research on the titans instead of just killing them on the spot.
    Contrast that with what happens here; Hange not wanting to take any chances with Reiner. So Jean's right, It IS pretty out of character for her and shows just how much Moblit's death affected her. On one hand, R.I.P. my boy, but on the other it's good to see that Hange really did care about him because she sure as hell didn't listen to the poor guy at all when he was still alive.
    On that note, I hope you cover the OVAs someday too. I really love your videos, especially the overanalyzing AoT ones, so an extra one or two would be just uhh... chef's keess.

    The bit about Armin at 3:26 reminds me so much of Captain America. He was weak physically but always had a pure heart and the courage to do what’s right. When Steve and Armin are literally given the power of the gods, they wield it with humility and restraint. THAT is what makes them heroes!

      Reminds me of that time captain america betrayed tony stark and genocided everyone in america because he found out russia was still upset that they lost a war against them one time.
      Iron man was all like "cap, think about what youre doing, this doesnt make any sense! you swore to protect these people and now you want them all dead?!"
      and captain america, of course is all "tony, you dont get it, if I dont kill our people, then they will kill our people, and if they kill our people, then we will have to kill them, and they dont want that, so I have to kill our people to save the people that are not ours who are trying to kill us"
      Its poetic, I wish writers like tolkien and herbert would stop being pussies and write good stories like this, actually achieving victory takes too much effort, the best stories are about helping the bad guys win so you dont have to risk anything. Aragorn should have turned around and said "for sauron" and stabbed that racist orc genociding gandalf in the dick.

    37:10 I think those frames of Levi with a shadow over his eyes are for the moments when he gets closer and closer to losing Erwin. He tried to stop him from going, knowing he might die, but Erwin rejected. Then, on the rooftop it's the moment of him finally making the decision and letting him go. It's personal, and we hear his soft sob, knowing that he hides his tears.
    In the next episode he corrects himself from "I chose you" to "No, due to my personal feelings I chose Erwin's death to be here and now."
    It's of course both, and Levi saving Armin's dream is a big deal, but he himself makes this accent on letting Erwin rest.
    Loved the video, thank you! It's my favourite episode, so I like listening to all kinds of interpretations, when they are reasonable.

      Because you're an actual drooling idiot if you think him turning against eldians like everyone else would be in character or good writing. I can only believe the other betrayals because they have been nothing but stupid up until that point to begin with, Erwin doing a complete 180 and saying "actually, we should all die and I'm glad the titans are being used to kill us" is peak armin, not erwin.

    • @cryptochronos4099
      @cryptochronos4099 2 месяца назад +25

      The problem wouldn't be Erwin becoming jagerist; the jagerists would be erwinists (because smithists just sounds bad). Erwin standing on a pile of corpses for a decade learning that there are people outside the walls, that they are a major if not the reason he stands on that pile of corpses then being giving a near godly power to fight back with the damage that a nothing left to lose Erwin would cause in 13 years of pure strategy and charisma at his back would make the rumbling look like a tea party and the jagerists look like a peace core. This is why the timeline is fixed why armin had to take the colossal because armin would allow peace but also armin would fight Eren. Erens plan needed him to devastate the world but also to lose in order to break the cycle.

    33:30 You left out one of my favorite details about this flashback scene. We start on a shot Eren's face, fade into the flashback, and see Armin from Eren's perspective. It then cuts to Levi's perspective in the flashback, then fades back out to a shot of Levi's face at the current time, showing that Levi is thinking of the exact same memory that Eren is.

  • @gmars1789
    @gmars1789 2 месяца назад +39

    I think you maybe missed the parallel between Levi being the one to call Eren a monster, not because he can transform into a Titan, but because he can never be caged or stopped, way back in season one. It is interesting then that Levi is called a monster, even if he owes his powers to the Ackerman bloodline, it’s his heart that makes him never stop chasing Zeke. It’s a really interesting parallel between Eren and Levi and the false dichotomy between what is human and what is monstrous. Levi flies into these rages a lot, where his eyes turn white which is interesting as well. Anyway, I think it’s a cool point or detail added by Isayama to perhaps highlight the similarities and differences between Eren and Levi. Because in the end there’s no difference between a human and a Titan heart. Under the right conditions anyone can become a monster or a god.

    One thing about killing Reiner that's problematic;
    If a shofter doesnt transfer their power before they die, a random Eldian will get it (born with it IIRC), resulting in either Marley sacrificing them for a candidate, or a Paradisian is born wirh it, and will randomly transform upon having the trigger activated.

    Two observations about some things said toward the end. The first is Armins gains. It makes perfect sense in retrospect. Even military members have beer guts. Hell, I had one when I was in. But my job was maintenance. I had all my muscle in my arms and legs.
    Considering how ODM gear works, I imagine anyone who could use it for more than thirty seconds and survive would have to be ripped like that.
    And on to his surviving the fall, it never even registered with me the first time I watched. Strange things happen in war, and that's nowhere near as strange as some stuff that's happened in real life.
    For an example, in WWII a B-17 gunner (I think he was the tail or ball gunner) was blown from the aircraft without a chute and fell nearly 20k feet to the ground, and survived. Just a wild thing that randomly happens.

    22:15 When Levi seems weaker than usual, couldn't it be because he remembers the time when he went mad at Erwin during his first expedition after the death of Isabelle and Furlan ?
    Erwin was able to calm him with his charisma at the time. I always thought that during this scene, Levi was remembering what it meant for a soldier to threaten his superior and getting himself a callback of who he was.

    Something you seem to be missing is that titan shifters CAN transform after an extreme injury. They just can't transform if they are injured shortly after a transformation. You can see this with reiner losing his hand and having the blade logged in his arm, and the best example is eren transforming after getting BOTH of his legs chomped off by porco in the final episode of s4 part 1. We can see eren has pants but then when he later leaves his titan he has "shorts" because he lost his legs. It makes sense for Armin to have a ton of abs but still a pretty slim body. He doesn’t take part much in the combat directly, and as we seen in season 1 when Reiner carries his bag in training, he’s not very strong. But the thing about ODM gear is that it’s super intense to use, even in the early stages, just using the little training setups in camp takes insane core strength, and flying about with them in combat literally leaves the soldiers with skid marks from the g-force. Given the scouts aren’t exactly well fed, it makes sense for him to be pretty skinny while still having a ripped core

    I think the answer to the question of whether Erwin will side with the Yeager or the Alliance lies in the morality of the characters.
    Armin has a gray morality. He does not divide people into good and bad, "a good person is someone who is convenient for you." The line between enemy and friend is very thin, and after receiving Berthold's memories, he strengthened his beliefs more strongly.
    Now the question is, what is Erwin's moral? Grey or black and white?

Also an underrated part of this episode I don’t see a lot is that it is almost completely devoid of music. It’s brilliant when a composer realizes that not having any music is even more powerful sometimes. A masterpiece of an episode.

    I would argue that narratively, it is not that tough a decision to choose armin over erwin, as erwin represents the idea of being the devil they see you as to survive, which is pretty antithetical to a big theme of the series. That being valuing compassion and understanding and this is armin's whole thing. I dont think that Erwin would have sided with Eren by any means, but I do think he would perpetuate the cycles of violence in the world more than armin would.

    This is just a theory but- I don’t know if you remember the scene with grisha and Eren Kruger at the wall on Paradise Island. One of the guards said that they could make a prisoner into a 3-4 class titan, which is like half of the full inject (MAYBE) but. My theory is..what if they used half on armin and half on Erwin ? Theoretically if my theory is correct both of them will turn into 4-5 class meter titans. Then that means we could save both armin and Erwin. Giving them the powers of the colossal titan and the armored titan. But Reiner is such a good character I wouldn’t want him to die either 😔

    I love as well, just how much the new generation theme is drilled into the decision to hammer home that Erwin has reached his limit.
    Obviously, on surface level, Armin is the face of the younger generation, with so many parallels to Erwin that we knew for so long already that it was implied he would replace him, or be put in the position to.
    But, down to their thoughts before their sacrifices, Erwin is thinking about his lost comrades, while Armin thinks of those who will live on. Or even their dreams, Erwin seeks to understand the past while Armin wants to discover something new.
    There's a reason nobody can imagine Erwin in season 4, he would have had nothing of himself driving him, and solely be existing to carry on the wishes of his fallen comrades

    I don't think Floch thinks he is a chosen Hero actually, its the opposite.
    Floch has survivors guilt. He worships those above him because he has no self worth, its why he is still a follower until much later in the story. At this point in time, he finds himself as the only person to survive and cannot comprehend why. He is angry at Erwin for causing all thier deaths, but at the same time... if his the only other person thats just about alive, then the only reason Floch survived must have been to save Erwin. And thats where his whole twisted mindset in that moment comes from.
    His whole obsession with needing a devil comes from this moment and is a result of his survivors guilt in my opinion.
    Also in terms of Armin being ripped, I originally thought it must be Titan stuff before realising that no, his a scout. ODM gear would require you to basically have insane core strength really, so if they are constantly training on that, even without specific gym work you'd be mad ripped.

    Armin's role is the moral compass of the show and the one who plants the seed of hope to Eren. Because he sees a life beyond the ocean, he moves forward for the future instead of being held back by the past. You see time and time again irl revolution where people use violence to overthrow a corrupt government, only for it to fall into the same cycle. Most people are too caught up in the chase, but failed to plan for how things should be.
    I'm not saying that Erwin's incompetent, but my guy has been completely burned out already ❤️‍🔥.
    While Erwin is willing to sacrifice for the bigger picture, Armin always tries to minimize the loss in order to save the most lives. It's his empathy that makes him a kind leader and a great negotiator. That is probably the most important weapon in a war.
