    A bit of a special episode. I received a few calls/emails from industry folk and riders after Chris Moeller's polarizing episode, but Brad in particular had the most to say. In the end, the only real solution was to have Brad fly out and sit down to discuss his side of the story...
    0:00 - Intro / Traction Coffee plug
    1:25 - @instagram’s Instagram
    9:20 - The bone that magically un-broke itself
    17:01 - Brad’s side of the Fit/Moeller podcast
    1:05:05 - Turning down an Energy Drink deal in 2021
    1:08:08 - 20 Million Gorditas from Taco Bell
    1:10:10 - “I’ll never ride for another BMX frame company”
    1:19:43 - The adidas/fiveten deal

      @@Brant_Moore the only problem I see is there's not enough money in BMX to start with. The big earners aren't making their money from the actual BMX company that sponsors them. I get what Simms is saying but you'd have all the brand's going under if they pay the riders what it sounds like he thinks they should be earning. It's a business at the end of the day.

      @@evanwiltse6127 I need to watch it through again as it's been a while but if I remember right I thought fit offered him signature parts but brad turned that down. He just wanted a frame fork and parts deal. Fit are gonna hardly pay him on that deal and then let him ride another parts deal. Fit seem by no means 100% squeaky clean in this but brad Simms should definitely not have been representing himself in getting contracts and deals as I'm afraid he seems slightly out of his depth in that department. I've since heard that moeller didn't pay him to cover the lost income of printing decal sets for parts that then weren't released.

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 2 года назад

      @@richieowen8783 that's why bmx needs to be smart and let some outside money in but be very selective. Honestly I never understood how skate and bmx didn't end up tight knit. And I really don't get why bmx doesn't show love to the scooter kids and influence them into bmx once they're big enough to properly ride a bike and not be dwarfed by it.
      I'm really hoping my company idea works out. Tryna start a brand, if I can get it going I have a few cool part ideas as well as some plans to bring outside money into our industry. Money that doesn't effect core bmx but does help us get that financial situation sort of resolved.
      Look at skater fashion. Bare dudes wear rhat shit that don't skate at all never have and have no interest. Nike sb being huge. I know chick's who don't even know what the names for tricks are but if you skate bam easy peasy tryna hook up. Go to Russia and bare chick's are like that with bmx lol.
      But at least for north America there's lots of things that could be done to help the scene.

Why should riders, especially people who are at the top level like Brad, not be able to afford rent and food and basically be able to live.

    I definitely feel for brad. Putting your body on the line for small checks that can stop at anytime is a rough way to live when you get out of your early 20's. Riders don't make shit and it's a damn shame.
    On the other hand, no matter what was going on with his contract negotiations, you can't just not contact your employer. At the very least you need to formally let them know you are taking a couple of weeks off and need time to think about your situation. From fits perspective, after having a significant disagreement over contract terms, brad ghosting them for 2 weeks definitely gave them the message that he wasn't part of the company anymore.
    I honestly think brad is kind of twisting his story when he says he really wanted to stay with fit for the rest of his career. If I felt that way about a company, I wouldn't ever lose contact with them.

    • @jluo
      @jluo 3 года назад +2

      Same. Can't just ghost a sponsor that's paying you money.
      Brad wanted more money but wasn't willing to put out sig parts that would have given him that extra revenue he wanted. Sounds like terrible communication on Brad's side and probably not the best from S&M but they did try a bunch through multiple people.
      Brad is a dope rider. He will always be in high regards for me but he just isn't a business dude it seems.
      Also dropping him without telling him first is pretty bad on S&M's part as well

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 2 года назад

      Part of it is on riders though. Many don't promote themselves enough. Many also don't do contests at all which is a decent way to make extra cash and grow your following.
      I wasn't even pro and had a small following of dudes I rode with who had I got sponsored woulda already been down to buy parts from such brands as well as sig parts. And I wasn't even that good.
      If you got a crazy following it's easier to negotiate. Plus look at the Gary Young podcast. Riders can score their own corporate sponsors if they work at it.

Try to go to your boss 7 weeks after you started working for him and ask for more money. You'll get a big fat NO, that's for sure. I think there are so many variables in this situation sales wise..
    1: a corporate company to small business via pay nearly impossible cause the money that comes from the small business is from just product sales mainly of just that said bmx companies catalog and the corporate companies have tons of non bmx to fall back on racing, striders, mtb etc.
    2. I’ve noticed with the change of times TALENT doesn’t equal sales it actually hurts the sales kids can’t relate so they just like, comment and move on and buy things from riders that they see them selves being able to emulate.
    3. There’s more to a riders check then just his riding it’s his selling abilities and marketing. (Not just posting IG) majority of riders think “ well I’m good and things sell out so I should make more” Not at all it took way more for the sales to happen then just your riding. It’s a team, and the inside does so much but is never touched upon nor discussed.
    3: Shops are the reason any of us are here PERIOD and honestly they don’t care, know or give a shit who the rider. It’s the relationship with the company and mainly the sales rep.
    Now I have a personal and business relationship with Brad what I said doesn’t mean he isn’t talented or one of the best it just means money comes from sales and sales comes from “the whole process”.. Him getting a agent and working with bigger corporate brands is where he belongs and deserves. Dudes top tier period.
    Ps if someone wants the best royalty check ask for stickers your welcome..

    Sounded to me like he told the exact same story as Moeller. Only difference I heard was that brad said they'd give him a pay rise/ other sponsors if things go great. Well whats your definition of great? Moellers wife played a blinder there as she can now define what great means. And I thought brad said he doesn't need representation when doing deals? Literally the exact same story from both sides. A deal was met, Brad kept asking for more, Brad gets salty, brad leaves. He even said himself that someone else on S&M or fit gets more than him and he's not happy with that. Like dude you haven't even been there a year and S&M have had no time at all to judge what additional income you bring. Yeah you may have won rider of the year but that doesn't instantly mean you should be the highest paid rider on the team. For all we know the biggest market may well be parents buying their kids bike stuff and if thats the case then I can easily see Ethan or another young rider bringing in way more dollar than Brad.

    So the hard part about talking business is; A general future fear that companies images will be tarnished. The flip side is riders used to keep brand image fresh. And in a world where job consistency is everything it’s hard. Drama used to stay current and on the tip of everyone’s tongue. Three managers who might not communicate. One buyer one seller. Living off of views and likes is depressing. Brad is not Mike Aitken.. then it transitions into race.. and it shouldn’t. Brad is physically capable of unimaginable feats. And maybe there’s a disconnect in a kid riding a signature bike. And backlash from fellow friends. I’m almost 11 months sober and the world and the internet is anything but sober. Not being emotional and reactive while thinking clearly is the key to maturity. Best of luck Brad! It’s a complicated industry. Keep your head up!

    Great old times when chase hawk was riding for fitbikes, seems this era is gone. Brad is a machine in the game right now, let the guy have the sponsors he needs, he deserves to make a decent living for all the moves he throws down. Fitbikes is not on top of their game, Brad is.
    They just had to share the prize
    Overall sad to see that core bmx companies can't afford to support riders

    BMX is a niche sport. And it doesn't get the interest that MTB does, let alone pro team sports. Brad seems to think athletic ability and pay go hand in hand. It's business, plain and simple. It doesn't matter how dangerous it is. Only very few people will ever live off BMX because there is only limited money from sales.

      Reading between the lines....Brad agreed to a salary which was less than he wanted.....refused a royalty scheme (directly linked to his popularity)..........then keeps asking for raises........then wants to represent less but still get paid the same.
      Yeah your financial wants are more at 35 than 20 years old, that's obvious. But your worth is your worth and BMX is tiny compared to every other mainstream sport.Should you get paid more just because you are older and expect more?
      I'm happy he's getting paid what he thinks he deserves....it worked for Nigel.

    It sucks bmx isn’t as popular as skateboarding, so riders start to feel like they deserve more money when it’s like bruh the top 5 bmx riders as a whole don’t generate as much as Nyjah Houston makes in one year. I think it has to do with the fact that bmx bikes are super expensive as opposed to a $100 complete board. Especially since kids now a days make fun of you for riding a bike that doesn’t have Atleast 3pc cranks

    Enjoyed this interview much more than expected. I do think an immature post from a company is, well immature. But I also think not talking to an employer for two weeks, especially when things are rocky, is a really crappy way to show you want to be a part of the team...
