  • Kanban is a simple and effective project management tool that everyone can use. All you need to build a Kanban Board are: masking tape, Post-it Notes, Sharpie Markers and lots of ideas!
    👉 Some of my favourite Post-it Notes for Kanban Boards:
    Colorful Post-it Note Collection (3x3 Miami) - amzn.to/3q6Ss11
    Assorted Post-it Flags - amzn.to/3RASFoU
    3M Expressions Masking Tape (to create Kanban Border) - amzn.to/3qa8p6I

    I'm a newly certified Scrum Master, and a C-Suite Executive Assistant with more than 15 years experience. I've always used Kanban but didn't know that's what it was called. I create folders: To Do, In-progress and Completed; drag them to varying statuses. Guess I created my own Kanban without knowing:) pretty cool.

      Congratulations on your Scrum Master certification and glad that you've been following the Kanban structure for your folder system. You can probably use some Post-it Flags to put on a folder if it's high priority or urgent to up your game.

    Wow. This is wonderful. Me and my husband are starting a new company and I am majoring in operations management at a University. My Mgmt of Services Operation professor suggested that we use this tool for startup as we do not have much funding for fancy software. Thank you for explaining this concept and how it will benefit us during our start up phase. Our business is focused on fiber optic network cabling and surveillance systems on tribal lands. Thank you very much.

    This is awesome. I'm someone who is very creative though also thoroughly unorganized. I get paralyzed at times with too much in my head because it can happen rapid fire, and not knowing where to began to untangle all of it into easier pieces while also putting together required steps so I can track them as well. This board idea is really explained succinctly and feels doable even for me!
    I love the idea of it being on the wall too for the immediate and always clear visual and lack of electronics involved! lol

    The Kanban is very useful to me. When it comes to making a to do list, I prefer not to digitally do things because I accidentally delete or lose where I typed them. But with this I feel so accomplished when things are in the completed or in progress sections. It’s very motivating to see you’re getting things done when they’re in progress or completed.

    I like it! I'm a visual person, and this makes sense to me and attracts me. You explain it so clearly and make it seem so simple. Thanks! It seems like a good idea for one project with a number of tasks, so it can be kept in right front of you on the wall. I like the way you broke the project down into areas, and gave each area a different post-it color, and entered tasks on the color of the post-it for that area. I'd like to use this system for all of my projects and tasks, but even if I had enough walls for it, I imagine it would feel way too cluttered. Would you have any suggestions? Things seem to get hidden or buried in an app or in a notebook.

    • @EdTchoi

      I’d really focus on a one or two important projects at a time so that you don’t lose focus. Of course, sometimes this isn’t possible, so you may want to use one board and different colored post-it notes to identify the different projects. Glad you found the video useful!

    Hey Ed! I was wondering what you might do in conjunction with a Kanban board? It looks like to me Kanban is about process and flow - but where would you put something that has a lot of to dos in each process and remembering that you are doing them, in addition to projects that might have some small overlapping parts/triggering events? I guess what I am asking is is there a place where I can zoom out and in as needed? I feel like the verage to do list plus Kanban is missing a critical piece that I struggle with

    • @EdTchoi
      @EdTchoi  3 года назад +4

      Hi Jenna, the Kanban booard is indeed about process and flow, however I would say that it's more on the "micro" level as the ideal timeframe for an effective Kanban Board is typically 1-week. Having said that, you can definitely go with a broader time frame, however what ends up happening is that each task becomes too generalized. To your point, sometimes there are lots of to-do's in each process, so you may want to break down your project into smaller chunks. It also helps to color coordinate the tasks based on the type of process so that you can have good visual representation. Are you using the Kanban Board for yourself or do you have a team working on the Board?

    • @jennamatlin8188
      @jennamatlin8188 3 года назад +1

      @@EdTchoi thanks for the quick reply! I have been using a version of Kanban (self employed) but for me I am really struggling with all the small moving parts. It is like I need #1 a schematic (for lack of a better word) that I can zoom in and out - big to granular and somehow have that tied to the Kanban. I recently bought a white board that takes up half my room, lol, and that has really helped but it is not big enough for this amount of data. I prefer physical over online but I have yet to find a system that interfaces/is dynamic, in this way. I am not naturally an "organizer" I am a creative person but all the moving parts are bogging me down and I am not sure how to fix it. If you have any ideas/tools I am ALL ears and thanks for reading :)

    • @EdTchoi
      @EdTchoi  3 года назад +5

      @@jennamatlin8188 One thought that comes to mind is storyboarding your tasks by chunking your processes onto a Post-it Easel Sheet (if you haven't seen this before, it's like a regular Easel sheet, but it has a Post-it backing so you can stick it onto your wall or whiteboard). The Post-it Easel Sheet can present a broader process/task and within the Easel sheet you can use the Post-it Notes to define the smaller sub-tasks or to-dos. This may help you organize all the micro tasks or to-dos in each of your processes. If you haven't seen my video on Business Process Modeling, have a look at it as it may inspire some ideas on organizing your thoughts and I talk about chunking your data and when to use a whiteboard vs. Post-it Notes - ruclips.net/video/QtUP04RIQFg/видео.html . BTW, thanks so much for watching and commenting. Getting feedback and offering help is probably one of the most rewarding parts of my RUclips channel :)

    • @kjw79
      @kjw79 7 месяцев назад

      What about using a larger post it note representing the large project, with smaller chunks of work listed on it, to show the full scope of the project. As you take in each smaller task within the project, create a smaller sticky for that task to move into In Progress. The smaller stickies can move around the board and even go back into the main project post it, or the list item can just get checked off.
      Other than that, you may be thinking more in value stream mapping or concept mapping vs this focused task board he is using.

    Very interesting and well done on the presentation. Question, I like this and kinda do something like this on envelopes all the time! But this is definitely a little more defined and refined, very good.
    Let's say I want to work on something with another person. Then e.g. would each person take charge of or be assigned a task on one stickie? Also fun fact one could make some notes on the stickies to communicate something, but what?

    • @EdTchoi
      @EdTchoi  2 года назад +2

      Thanks and glad you liked the video! Yes, I would assign a task on a Post-it Note to a specific individual so that one person is accountable for the task. You'll probably want to color code the Post-it Note for each person. If you need to communicate something with regards to the task, I would probably use Post-it Flags and have a coding system (for example, a red flag on a Post-it Note task can denote someone needs help ASAP to move the task forward). Let me know if this makes sense.

    Interesting, but a small fortune in office supplies

      B L Donovan yes, but I believe it would pay off. A lot of people and companies are paying a small fortune in Project Management Software, however in some cases, the Post-it Method is more efficient and effective at a fraction of the cost of the software solutions. Just a thought 😊

    Jesus christ as if fucking post-it notes and a to-do list were some kind of revolutionary new idea. What next "folks do you ever notice towards the end of the day it starts getting dark? Well I've come up with a solution to this problem. I simply get up off my ass and walk over to the corner wall by the door. Right there is a switch and if flip that switch turning on the light. Bingo problem solved" and then cue the comment section "Wow, awesome. Thanks for this."

      lol...I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to comment on my video. I'm sorry you don't see the value in using Post-it Notes to create a Kanban board. Kanban happens to be a highly effective productivity tool used widely in the business world either by using software tools, or yes, Post-it Notes. As mundane as the Post-it Note may seem, it's a very important business tool which is probably why Post-it Notes generates over $1 billion in global revenue a year.
      Thanks anyways for providing your viewpoint on this and perhaps this video wasn't as relevant for you, but I appreciate you watching it anyways. Perhaps one day you'll see the value in it :)

      Haha...yes, I get what you mean as I anglicized the pronunciation. Thanks for catching that and thanks for watching!
