  • Every September, the Memorial Art Gallery caps off the summer festival season in Rochester with the M&T Bank Clothesline Festival. It's a tradition that goes back to 1957, when 101 artists from the Rochester area hung their paintings on clotheslines along the fence in front of the Gallery. Since that time, the festival has grown to include more than 430 artists from all over New York state from Buffalo all the way downstate to Brooklyn. From its humble beginnings, the festival has transformed into a community event that draws tens of thousands to see and purchase all types of art from paintings to sculpture, photography, ceramics, jewelry, glass, fiber arts and more. The festival is also a chance to take in live music and other performances, food of all sorts and enjoy the collection inside the museum that the festival helps to support.
