Saving money on unforeseen auto repairs is easy when you have one of the top OBD-II scanners on hand. Living expenses are skyrocketing, so the last thing you need is to spend a fortune on a mechanic's diagnosis of a problem you could easily solve yourself.
OBD (on-board diagnostic) scanners can be plugged directly into the access port on your automobile to provide a view into the computer of the vehicle. A reputable scanner will be able to tell you whether the check engine light is something little you can fix on your own or something more serious that requires professional assistance. Having all this knowledge on hand pays off and prevents dishonest people from pressuring you to do unneeded fixes.

I bought the Innova 5610 to shop used cars for my son before I saw this video. I paid over $300, but it is still worth it for all it alerts you to when inspecting pre-owned cars, and it's capabilities as explained in the video. The 120+ page manual is through, and easy to understand. Detailed descriptions are given of systems, computer modules and requirements that need to be met in order to be completely trouble free again. The buttons are minimal, well labeled, and navigating through the menus is easy, too.

While FIXD was OK, they suckered me into a $100 per year subscription, that I promptly requested a refund.
I got the Blue Driver from Amazon, for $89, so that wasn't a bad deal at all.

There are some great OBD2 devices. But if you are not an actual mechanic, many of the features shouldn't be messed with. If you are just a plain ole Owner. Having the ability to scan an engine code so that you can have a reasonable discussion with the mechanic is the best starting point. Advanced engine and diagnostic looking into may be fun for the DYI person, but the fact is, YOU ARE NOT A MECHANIC. So messing around with the engine features is not a smart thing to do if you aren't trained as a mechanic.
Sure, there are lots of smart individuals out there who can do vehicle diagnostics but the gross majority of people aren't talented and can do massive harm to the Engine Settings thinking they are boosting performance.

I agree. These are decently Over Priced Pocket Readers at best. Sure, Bi Directional Controls of what? Regardless of Reader, you need Factory Repair Data to support your findings. Etc. Etc...

What you're talking about is an engine tuner which has a J2534 interface, OBD2 dongles are only for reading live data & error codes/resetting them

if you simply want to clear codes, takes it to Autozone, Orillys, etc and they'll clear it for free.

@@h.u.l.k.7072 I suppose I should have added; the Bluedriver seems to be the best for the money, if you want to own one. In personally like having mine because It can be useful to diagnose yourself to wither BS teat what the mechanic is saying or if you're the DIY type it is really a huge help to point you in the right direction when tracking down issues. The other thing I use mine for is when inspecting a used vehicle im wanting to buy.

the bluedriver is rubbish. constant issues connecting to it. and the "possible" fixes isn't as helpful as they make it sound. anyone using one of these tools will already know what the DTCs are pointing to.

I agree with you- halfway. It did correctly diagnose an EVAP code for me. That was nice. But it wouldn't clear all engine codes. It just kept hanging up at 80%.

You're right it only runs its own proprietary software which is completely rubbish from what I've seen. A cheap ELM327 dongle reads everything with the right software
