Spain is one of the few countries that does not depend on Russia for its gas supply. Spain not only has a very diversified network of suppliers: it also has two gas pipelines connecting it to Algeria. All this gas could be resold to Europe to replace a proportion of Russian imports.
However, relations between Spain and Algeria are at their worst in decades. A series of questionable diplomatic moves have caused Madrid to sacrifice the opportunity of becoming a European natural gas hub.
But what exactly happened and what does Morocco have to do with all this? In this video we tell you.

Why should we do this garbage? Its cheaper to build gasports in germany (which we are already doing). Spain woul want money for the use of the ports + for the gasification + the use of their pipelines + france would want money for the use of their pipelines. So no we will not do this!

The missing part in this otherwise insightful report is : France's historical blockade to all connection with Spain. They always wanted Spain subjugated and isolated from Europe, since the spaniards humiliated them many times in the past, there is a grudge that no one talks about, but it's at the center of France's policy towards Spain. They opposed the EU membership for Spain for almost 11 years after Franco died. The french farmers where attacking the spanish lorries with spanish agricultural products, and dumping their contents, while french Police where looking the other way, and that happened for many years after Spain had joined the EU. They broke their promise on many rail, tunnels and highway joint projects. When you go to France crossing the pirenees fron Spain you have this incredible 3 lane motorways and tunnels, only to get greeted by a narrow high mountain road in the french side. I'm sure France is gonna delay this pipeline forever, giving false hopes, to change their mind again later on. The best thing Spain should do is to scrap the "French Connection" inmediately, and start to lay down a maritime pipeline with Italy, which could be expensier, but there are hopes that Brussels would fund it, though I believe France would try to stop that too.
The Frenchies talk big about the European idea but are perhaps one of the greatest impediments to it

Phosphate. I am a farm boy. Morocco and Israel are the two biggest providers of PHOSPHATE to the entire world. Phosphate is one of three types of fertilizer that pretty much everything that we eat needs to grow. Western Shara may have untapped reserves of this commodity WAY scarcer than Natural Gas. 75 % of the worlds phosphate reserves = Morocco.

mining for potash and phosphate coming online soon and also building a plant to manufacture Urea in WA coming online 2024. So we will be self sufficient in the 3 fertilisers.

And also Mauritania and Senegal have discovered a large quantity of gas.
And also Morocco has signed a contract with Nigeria to build a pipline from lagos directly to Europe to supply Europe with nigérian, sengalian, Mauritanian and moroccan gas. This african countries or able to supply all Europe need for gas, and then Europe doesen't need Russia enymore for supling gas and petrol.

In the long term Spain wins with Morocco. You'll make a video about it in a few years and you will reference this video.
Nuclear power plants are the way to go for low carbon emissions and as a backup until better energy storage can be developed. If Europe was ever cut off to natural gas by Russia, I assume the transition to backups like nuclear and securing new trade deals/supplies would come much faster than expected. Russia could have a great deal to lose if this does happen, so it could be a delicate balancing act.
I did not even bothered to read all of your comment, but just the first line and half showed me how uninformed your opinion on nuclear really is: nuclear power is not popular, not because it is dangerous, not because of nuclear pollution in mines where uranium is extracted. The real reason of nuclear energy lack of popularity is that nuclear is the most expensive energy in real terms (considering construction cost and maintenance), the nuclear reactors take more than 10 billions to build, they take close to a decade or more to be operational (assuming that your country is efficient and experienced doing this type of projects). Nuclear is not scalable, it is either too big or too small. Nuclear requires setting up special organism to deal with the safety and the security (as in not being stolen) for the radioactive plants and materials, it is by far the heaviest industry that a country can have and the most regulated... and there is also the nimby, even the nuclear fans would not want to have a nuclear power station in their backyards. I certainly don't want my government using my taxes on nuclear when there are clearly cheaper and faster alternatives.

Actually there is an alternative very often ignored by the media, which is Portugal by which has no conflicts with neither country and has a diverse portofolio of suppliers and has the conditions to being a entry point/hub for the rest of europe, also its safe and far from the influence of the actual world stage actors, they get gas from algeria and so on and there has been shown interested by the Germans of using Portugal instead of Spain as the hub, and the reasons for that, many have been shown on the video, Spain has made unwarranted poor choices....
That mountain range between Portugal and the rest of Europe, and easily defended ports really help Portugal.
Plus they can activate their Brazilians and unleash an army of BJJ Fighters butt scooting across Europe daring people to jump into their guard

In Canada we have lots of gas but no export LNG terminal to ship gas to Europe.

@@Royhkz Portugal receives its gas through the LNG terminal of the deep sea port in Sines, mainly from Nigeria, the USA and Qatar.
Maybe it's not about gas at all. Morocco has a project underway already with the UK to supply solar farmed electric (the cables are already being laid). If that's the path that they're going down in the future then Spain could be the doorway to Europe for that instead. That could explain the stance on Western Sahara as well.

@@yurichtube1162 so whilst I totally agree, Morocco has a key advantage. It’s a combination of hydro (favorable Atlantic currents, wind (both coast based and in the desert 🏜 at night as there is plenty of wind power and lastly, solar power in the vast Sahara).

I am Spanish and I totally agree with you. Our president does not think when to act and ends up making huge mistakes. It should also be mentioned that what the president does does not include the opinion of the population since on the issue of gas the majority of the population defends diplomacy with Algeria and support for Western Sahara. I as a Spaniard am very bothered by the position of our president and I am aware that we have earned this ourselves.

Spain, France and Portugal have signed a huge agreement just today. The door to the rest of Europe is finally opened.
NIGERIA 🇳🇬 🇳🇬, is the missing but the most important link here, Morocco and Algeria are lobbying Nigeria that has the largest gas reserve in Africa to route gas pipeline already in northern Nigeria through it to Europe.

Hello VisualPolitik the video is very informative but it contains some inaccuracies.
1- Morocco tried to invade Algeria one year after its independence not 4 years.
2- the territorial dispute wasn't over the Western Sahara but about Tindouf and Bechar, Moroccans claim that Tindouf and Bechar belong to them and France took it away, so despite signing treaties that clearly state that Tindouf and Bechar are Algerian lands, Moroccans tried to invade their war torn neighbor and this is where everything started.
3- After 1963 Algeria started to see Morocco as an expansionist state that must be stopped at all cost, that's why Algeria fully support the Polisario to curb Morocco's expansionist desires.
4- For the gas to start reflowing as it used to Algeria has one major request: Spain needs to revert its support for the Autonomy plan unlike what was stated in the video.
Its France that confirmed the fact that they took "Moroccan Eastern Sahara" and added it to "french Algeria"
That's not a Moroccan claim it's just a historical fact, read french history books or just Google.
Edit: everything else is Algerian government information (only available in Algeria and confirmed only by Algeria) but of course you're free believe whatever, (and yes initially the conflict wasn't about the South of Morocco WS)

Literally all countries in the world have moved on and accepted the colonial inherited borders except for Morocco. It's not your land Algerians liberated it, get over it
i personally don't care, just correcting some misinformation.
It's different, in this case there was a deal that after Algeria gains independence, Morocco would have it's land back "Eastern Sahara"(there are videos u can check proving the signing of this agreement), of course Algeria changed plans, you know the rest.
Hopefully they can find some reasonable agreement and become allies ✌️

@@jedlen4262 videos aren't proofs there's no such agreement. Morocco refused to recognize Mauritania claiming it's theirs, they tried to colonize Tindouf and they are fighting for Western Sahara. There's a clear pattern here. And I repeat there's no such agreement between the temporary government of Ben Khedda and Mohamed the fifth.

Both Spain and Portugal could massively increase their Solar Power and transfer the Gas they use to the North! Italy and grace could also increase their Solar and reduce their Gas.

@Lama Dlama it's because they're braindead, they don't know where their country's gas comes from and how important it is we get gas from said country, all that matters to them is the Propaganda that tells them "Russia is bad and everything that comes out of Russia including its people and products is bad." and as result we are getting a giant gas crisis this winter where we Europeans will be cold, without electricity and some of us even without a home forced to either freeze to death, turn to crime, or off themselves.

It does not work like that. There is a limit to solar in a grid. Also because of Drought Hydro power is way down in the Peninsula.
The same argument could be made for Italy, free from the Algerian-Moroccan tensions through the Tunisia pipeline.
the Tunisian Pipeline is already providing the maximum rate possible, only solution is to build a new Pipeline.
How old is that pipeline?
@masmoudi5595 It is called GALSI and will connect Algeria and Sardinia, then Elba and Tuscany, as well as pipelines from Egypt and Israel connecting to the Azeri pipeline (which already exists) in Greece and then to Italy and Europe.
considering that building new infrastructure takes at least a few years, it seems counter productive to build new infrastructure to support an industry that your stated goal is to divest from. it may be that Spain made it's decision with other considerations in mind than trying to implement a long term solution towards short to medium term problem
But it will take decades or more to divest themselves from petroleum products and even when it stops being used for transportation and heating, everything these days seems to have petroleum in it-plastic, hell, memory foam mattresses are made using petroleum=so I don't think building the infrastructure will be a boondoggle. And LNG being so much easier to transport and store for sure will be around for quite awhile.
That kind of thinking, which took hold in the finance industry, has gotten us into inflation and recession. It is causing famine (pretty much unavoidable now).
It take 2-5 years for an investment to start producing gas. It takes 10 years to get payback. The inflation, recession caused by high energy prices etc will actually cause a delay in transition to renewables as the money for new expensive renewables just won't be around. It is resurrecting Coal. Oil and Gas must not be discouraged. There must be a smooth transition, not a shock. We have been achieving 20% reductions of emissions per decade and this is enough pace. Lying is evil and Green hype is evil.
@@williamzk9083 while that may be so, delaying reducing emissions will cost us a lot more in the long term if we keep delaying switching to renewables. But I also doubt this industry will die off completely. At least for now.
@@Aegis23 The switch to renewables will fail. The technology isn't there. Globally its only a tiny percentage of wealthy nations that have used wind and solar power. It's only 2-3% of global energy use. You have no idea of how much it will cost. The price of your food is highly dependant. It is best to precede with increasing the efficiency of everything and slowly phasing in where possible.
Greenhouse problem is exaggerated. CO2 absorption spectrum is non linear and mostly saturated in lower atmosphere. We have a lot of time.
@@Aegis23 You don't understand. High fossil energy prices will increase emissions substantially. The way to increase emissions is to convert over to expensive technologies that don't work and to crash the economy so that people can't afford renewables.

The importance of algeria s gaz is exaggerated and spain know that. Algeria suffers from high domestic consumption and a decline in gas discoveries. Even the Italian newspapers are talking about the difficulty of Algeria in fulfilling its promises. Spain has more strategic and economic benefits with Morocco than with Algeria. The video needs a paragraph about the real capabilities of Algerian gas exports
It's simple, Morroco contains 70% of the world's phosphate supply. Edit: since no one responded let me elucidate. Phosphate is a critical component in fertilizers. It is the tightest bottle neck in the 3 macro nutrients (NPK)
Without fertilizers as major inputs, global agricultural will collapse ( or at least be severely diminished). Gas supplies are a short to medium concern, agricultural is a necessity.
Morocco also is home to the largest solar plant in the world.

Having said this, Morocco recently discovered potential gas reserves; perhaps Spain has not made a wrong decision; we will see how these discoveries develop in the nearly future.
Actually Spain picked Morocco over Algeria as it make sense for multiple angles. Not just in Economical reason but also in energy. VisualPolitik failed to mension the EU investment in solar energy in Morocco where they building massive Solar panels in the desert to harness suns energy that could provide huge electricity to western europe.

MidCat should be invested into but as part of a larger network. I mean part of not just a distribution network of gas but also the possibility to expand it so that hydrogen and oil could be transported. Not because as Macron states it "It would (not) be needed", but because it's smart to have diversity in energy supplies. Spain has already proven that diversity in energy supply is an absolute must have, Germany is paying the price of not having it. Such larger networks are already being build and basically consist of tunnels where multiple pipes can be put in more easily as needs arise.
I truly love and respect the work that you do and since I'm from Algeria I would really love a video about that since it is impossible to access and especially to trust the local state media.

There is already a pipeline algeria-italy-europe. Must be doubled of corse and the fact that I'm italian is only a detail ....!!??!!
I would think that question needs to be asked in several parts. To physically build the pipeline, probably not too long because I am assuming alot of the gas is already going to Kraftwerk Plana del Vent, a gas plant that is only 589 km from France's Elengy - LNG Terminal Fos Cavaou and the terrain looks flat with already infrastructure so logistics should not be an issue. The real issue is the bargaining, scope, if France and EU wants it more than Spain, Spain will ask for something like a 20/80 cost split where EU/France pays for 80% of the cost and more than likely this will be a price plus not a fix cost. That number will take awhile or depending on how desperate the EU to link this gas

- Morocco has found gas and they are building a pipeline that’s starts from Nigeria and goes to Morocco. We already have a pipeline gaz with Spain so we aim to provide European market as an alternative to Russia.

The world's second biggest owner of gas reservoirs after Russia is "IRAN"! But you don't talk about it much and you should make a video about it. There is a gas pipeline connecting Iran To Turkey which gas could be sent to Europe through it. Iran currently has shortage of gas production due to technical problems caused by sanctions but it is also swapping the gas of the republic of Turkmenistan (another major producer of natural gas) to Azerbaijan through it's pipelines and the volume of that gas can be increased and part of it sent to Europe through Turkey.
And one other big Fact: The world's third biggest producer of gas which exports most of its gas as liquefied gas is Qatar which is also a neighbor of Iran and the main gas field of both countries in the Persian gulf is a shared gas field so by just building a very short pipeline connecting the gas fields of Qatar to Iran's huge gas pipeline network, a big part of Qatari gas can go to Europe through Iran and Turkey. A few days ago I saw news about negotiating an agreement between Iran and Qatar for such a pipeline.
Please talk about these issues and particularly the role Iran can play in supplying gas to the world via it's pipeline network.

When you talk about Morocco you should first learn a little bit of history and also get informed instead of bringing clichés. Perejil island was not invaded by Morocco as it was moroccan as known by Spain General Staff and this "invasion" was made by six policemen against smuggling. Aznar, who wanted to show USA that he was an allied in the war against Irak (a true improvoked invasion) published that as an act of war of Morocco sending naval forces and paratroopers and submarines against six policemen. Regarding Western Sahara you should inform when was occupied by Spain this territory and to whom it belonged till 1884 (Morocco). You should inform too that Western Sahara was half returned to Morocco in 1958 (Tarfaya province) after the war between the moroccan liberation army against Spain and France that almost liberated the full Western Sahara (that is half of the saharawis were living in Morocco since 1958, the other half since 1976/79). Nowadays all saharawis live with exactly the same status and rights than other moroccans in their country, with no discrimination. You should inform too that Algeria, before its independence, recongnised that Western Sahara was moroccan (in fact till 1974). Maybe you can consider that Morocco is not a perfect democracy, but you should know that the Gvt is issued from elections and its parliament majority. If you consider that the power of the King is contradictory to a real democracy, I think that in the USA the power of the industrial military complex has a far bigger power in the USA (Eisenhower), and the same could be said about financial and economic companies power in the EU, than the King of Morocco in Morocco. I'm not sure that in western countries "democracy" is better than in Morocco, they just have a better life standing thanks to the economic imperialism (sanctions, war, coups) with the rest of the world.

As an American, I can say our government’s decision to recognize Western Sahara as Morocco a few years ago was actually a pretty popular decision. And no, it had nothing to do with Israel. There are historical claims at play (Almoravid & Almohad Kingdoms). We should be nicer to countries like Morocco.

Those ports are basically nothing but a slight decrease in prices because the travel time is less for LNG ships.

Look at how divided Christianity has become and the mess that has resulted (One of the main reasons US/UK hate Russia so much is because it is an Orthodox Power, whereas Protestantism has fizzled out. Similarly Catholic countries (France/Italy/Poland)are ideologically weak and envious of Russia for the same reason. It’s pure envy. I would do anything to have our Christian world be as ideologically united as the Sunni Muslim world. I say this as a Catholic American. Don’t make our mistake and throw that away over petty disagreements! Do it for your history and culture.

Morocco just wants Western Sahara. Algeria still has a lot to be proud of even if Morocco were to integrate the southern provinces. The world sees the two countries on equal footing. I don’t think Morocco has ambitions beyond the Western Sahara at all. I actually know many Moroccans and they rarely even mention Algeria at all.
