Asia's Invisible Hand in Africa's Gemstone Industry

- Colorful gemstones such as sapphires, rubies and emeralds may glitter but the world behind these gemstones looks a lot less attractive. A conservative estimate of the global annual market for rough colored gemstones, the term used to describe uncut, unpolished stones, valued the sector at about $20 billion. However, the supply chain for the gemstones appears to be a classic textbook example of unequal global distribution. The further back you go in the chain, the less people earn. The gemstones are often mined in the poorest developing countries then they then go to slightly less poor developing countries which are traditional processing centers such as Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and China where they are cut and polished. Finally, they are sold in the wealthy West.
This is because of the secretive nature of flows, often done by under-reporting both the quantity and the value of the gemstones. Most African colored gemstones are moved undeclared through informal channels or are under-declared in official channels.

Sometimes I don't see much hope for my motherland our leaders slave mentality is deeply rooted in the evil colonial past, that an Asian business man publicly asserts that Africans are the dumbest people in the world that had the muzungu's rejoicing in affirmations, this really hurts.

This ridiculous and has to STOP, please our leaders stop exporting raw minerals and if you do, please control it and increase export tax and tarrifs. What Mozambique did is a really good start, as Africans we need to do this COLLECTIVELY, so that we can control our borders, we need to have our intelligence agencies collaborate across borders to stop minerals move from one country to the other and then to far east - no one country can beat this evil system of inequality we need to work as regional block or even the entire continent together. Transit countries like Rwanda, what do they really gain compare to Thailand, if really work with their neighbors to collaborate and process minerals and add value it would benefit them more since they have a good organised economy and small well maintained state and in term it would promote stability in the region as whole.
Here is my solution
1) Increase collaboration across borders
2) Set a a massive fine and punishment for those caught illegally trading to deter those attempting this evil business
3) Create policy for investment that promote local processing and tighten export by increasing tax
4) Set up massive task force to crackdown illegal business/practices
Obviously each country is at different stage and may do things differently, but we need to think about medium and long term impacts of our quick gains or short cuts.
