I feel Beijing has more of the China Soul since there is more Chinese architecture and culture. Shanghai is like HK where the Western influence is much stronger and therefore doesn't feel as a more pure Chinese experience.

I have lived in Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou.
Overall, Shanghai's urban construction is more exquisite, but as a southerner, I prefer the weather in Beijing. Because there is too much rain in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Especially in Guangzhou, it's too humid.
China is so big and has so many different city and culture. Enjoy it.
Very interesting theme and I agree with you. It's hard to compare the two cities as they are so different from each other. For those who want to see things that are more characteristic of China, Beijing would be a good starting point-seven of the ancient cultural sites are on the UNESCO list. Shanghai is definitely more Western and commercial. I like the orange soda in Beijing, which I believe has real orange juice in it, whereas Fanta is basically sugar water with some coloring in it. I definitely go for the Baozi in Beijing.:)
The best part is that an inexpensive high-speed rail connects these two lovely cities within 6 hours or hourly flights only 2 hrs. The hotels are less than 1/2 the costs of NYC or LA. And it is PERFECTLY SAFE to go out ANY HOUR of the day.

For living I would prefer some "smaller" and friendly city, as Xiamen, Qingdao or even Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou or Xuzhou
Very nice show of local Hu Dong of Beijing, the most pedestrian traffic jam in Beijing that I had experienced were the Nanlou Guxiang Hu dong ( just south of Bell & Drum Towers), and the Silver Ingot Bridge ( just to the west of that) is excellent for people watching.

The cities in China are very different, no one can say which one is better because people have many different views. I remember that when my university classmate from Beijing saw the countryside, and was amazed by the view of the fields and mountains, my another classmate from the countryside said he was seeing them every day and nothing special.

The 2nd traditional Beijing drink mentioned is not made of soya but is fermented mung bean milk and the bread used for dipping is not 油条 but 焦圈. Here are the correct facts in case anyone is interested

The pathway between west lake and kunming lake in the summer palace.
As a local Beijinger, born and raised, I personally think Chengdu is the best city to live in.

@@falconfrank548 as a north-easterner of china, my experience is beijing is too hot in summer, but not cold enough in winter to have a real winter experience. i think the best environment is Dalian my hometown，not too hot, but has proper winter..

She said the hutong area was like a small town, it’s actually true, hutong area is very typical rural vibes of northern China, you can find the vibes of small towns/villages in Shandong Province, hebei province too

Haha. Relatives from my mom's side of the family are in Beijing and relatives from my dad's side of the family are in Shanghai so I did get asked Beijing or Shanghai a lot by people whenever I visited China.

@@AmelieZh For now, I feel I have to say Shanghai because Beijing I only visited during summers with my family and I never actually experienced living there on my own. But Shanghai I had the opportunity to live there for a year without my parents going with me. I got to see the seasons changing and I had to navigate around mostly on my own, though some relatives checked on me sometimes. I started to know people like the meat shop a yi who I baked cookies for and she gave me discounts. One night I came back from my uncle's place when it was a little bit late at night and she saw me walking home. She was so nice for worrying about me being out late. There was also a hair salon employee who couldn't stop talking about LeBron James and a nearby café owner who bought medicine for me and gave me home-cooked chicken soup when I got a cold. I drew pictures for her 7 year old daughter. Just because of the longer time spent, there was time to meet people and feel more connected. But I'm sure I could also feel that way about Beijing if I had the opportunity to stay a longer time. However one thing that was hard for me to get used to in Shanghai was how loud it was in the middle of the night where I stayed. I am used to nature sounds where I live in the suburbs of the U.S. I can leave the bedroom window open at night and just hear insects and birds or a neighbor's dog. In Shanghai when I woke up at 3 am, it was still loud. There were still so many sounds like the crosswalk sign changing sound, construction sounds, vehicle sounds. Oh, a difference foreigners might not notice as easily is how the talking differs. I really like Beijing accent more than Shanghai. The Beijing way of speaking with all the er sounds at the end sounds very warm to me.

Hutong which is 胡同 in Chinese， and 胡 means northern minorites who lived in outskirt of china... and 同 has similar prononciation as 洞 which translate as "hole" ..so the literal translation can be “the hole area that reside many northern minorities". beijing was capital so, there were so many norhern minorities who came to china for offical or business trips they might be arranged by the then government of china to live in now Hutong areas.
that's just my guessing, the name of places can change away it's original words with the flow of time.

Depends on what you like, shanghai is more modern, convinient and more friendly to expats, the weather is also fine, more hummid, Beijing is more historical and fun place to visit, but its dry and foggy in winter compared with shanghai, personally, I prefer shanghai.

I moved to Beijing with my parents when I was only 6 years old, and have been living in the alleys of Bei Luo Gu Xiang for many years. I went to Chengdu to study at university when I was 18, and have been working abroad since then. My favorite city is Chengdu. Although Chengdu no longer has the strong atmosphere of life it did more than 20 years ago, it has become more and more commercial, and Chinese cities are becoming more and more similar, but I still like the atmosphere of Chengdu the most, especially the food and rain there.
Bei Bing Yang (the Beijing Soda) is a brand I had when I was a kid. It was very cheap at the time, but now it is far more expensive than Coca-Cola. It is a kind of sentiment.
Most importantly, I suggest foreign friends not to try Douzhi easily. .

I have spent several months in Beijing and in Shanghai and I always loved Beijing sooo much better than Shanghai. Chinese culture, architecture, history has my heart and if you wanna experience a the vibe you should definitely go to Beijing. I didn’t feel Shanghai at all, of course it’s an amazing city and I am so grateful to have been there but I didn’t feel it…
The city of Shanghai combines many elements, including modernity and tradition, East and West, and even freedom and autocracy. Just as the Chinese name of Shanghai means sea, the Chinese idiom means that the sea is open to all rivers. Beijing is relatively simple. It has inherited China's traditional culture very well and maintained China's humanistic characteristics.
Personally, I like Shanghai a bit more. I would like to live somewhere near the coast, more down south. Qingdao, Pingtan, Shenzhen, and so much more. There's too much to choose from. Beijing is really nice, though.

I was born and raised in Shanghai, and I used often go to Beijing. I prefer Shanghai, which is more exquisite and Shanghai style. Overall, Beijing feels a bit more rustic compared to Shanghai.

This may sound weird, but while I agree that Shanghai is categorically the better city (economy, infrastructure, modern culture etc.), I love Beijing and I wouldn't want to live in Shanghai. The biggest reason is because I just love VISITING Shanghai and being amazed by something new and exciting every time I go there. 😂 I've lived in China for seven years and each time I visit Shanghai, I always have lots of "Wow" moments, so I wouldn't want to live there because then I'm afraid that feeling would wear off.
Chengdu is the best city in China. Ha!
Personally I like Beijing better than Shanghai, but both of them are not my most favorite cities in China. I love Xiamen the most.😊

Beijing is the political center of China and has been the capital since ancient times. It has many historical sites and is very international. Shanghai is China's economic center and an international city. The cost of living in both is not low, so tier 2-3 cities are the most comfortable.😂
