- Championship hangovers in sports are common but in motorsports it can be a little more complex. Tony Stewart's 2006 season is very interesting looking back on it.

Too late
In before Jimmie Johnson 2017- today
I like how your name is DennyDelivere...
Championship hangover: Jimmie Johnson 2011
AKA, Jimmie became temporarily mortal.
How? I get he didn’t win as much in 2011 but he was literally neck and neck with Edwards until the Chase started. Hell Kyle Busch actually won the regular season title that year with Johnson 2nd.
I think his 2014 season was a bigger hangover then 2011 due to the fact he didn't finish in the top 10 in points that year. Hell his 2017 season is also a notable hangover season.
We dont talk about that year
As a jimmie fan I think 2017 would have not been as bad if not for that pocono wreck that is probably at least for me the hardest pocono wreck
Stewart missing the chase in 2006, i want you all to know, was a massive shock at the time. I remember vividly talking with fans and friends alike and the "general consensus" was that Hamlin would miss the chase, hes a rookie and he would stumble. Kasey Kahne as well was hot and cold, he would win one week and then run 20th the next, he might fall out. Even Jeff Gordon, he was stupid close to not making the Chase again. But when Stewart missed it and the other 3 I mentioned made it, it was one of those "Wait a minute, hold up, what the hell just happened here" moments. Great video!
Just like with Jeff Gordon a year before.
I feel this was the main reason they expanded to what it is today
We all know that this video is in preparation for "Kyle Busch 2020"
It’s coming..
Unless
Kyle pulls a Stewart and wins 5 races in the playoffs.
Hi
Erik Corr with the way he’s performing and how bad his luck is I doubt that
He’s in actual danger of missing the playoffs, if he gets more bad luck expect that video as soon as September
"Championship Hangover: Brad Keselowski 2013"
He covered that, Bad seasons: Brad Keselowski 2013

Motorsports Fan17
He did a bad seasons video that was Brad Keslowski's 2013 season.
Most champions don't get brand new generation cars and make of cars in the off season, and Brad also had a horrible string of luck in the late spring/early summer that doomed him.
@@badbooking3221 Brad did have a bit of a resurgence towards the end of the year though. Heck he won the fall Charlotte race.
@@spheredhawk67 for all the good he may have had, badly timed engine issues ultimately kept him out. It wasn't like he ran bad, but the luck was.

Too early. Season not over yet.
OldWorm67 I know but it’s looking very likely
No Kyle crybaby just sucks he is trash always has been
Championship hangover: Kyle Busch 2020
👀
Not yet
It's true but it aint his fault. He used practice to learn the grove and stuff. Without practice its gonna be tough
@@Rick-ob4gs Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin: "Am I joke to you?"
Kyle crybaby is trash very overrated no talent crybaby
@@billwilmington8284 Idk About them 2 but I do know that Kyle used practice to learn the track which he couldnt do this year.
Bobby Labonte In 2001 might be a good example of a hangover. Was winless for most of the season and was involved in two terrible wreaks.
championship hangover: Jeff Gordon 2002, wins the title in 01, almost goes winless in 02
He still finished top 5 in points with 3 wins🤣🤣Gordon 02 and Johnson 11 are no hangovers. Johnson literally was top 2 in points majority of that season up to the Chase.
A lot of Jeff’s early season struggles in 2002 were due to his divorce from Brooke, jump-starting the 48 team with handing over several of his proven racecars and some rotten race luck.
Despite that, Jeff was in the top 5 in points most of the season & was a title threat until the Hendrick Engine Debacle at Talladega in the fall season.
JG still won 3 races, scored 13 top 5s and 20 top 10s, 3 poles & a 4th place points finish... That’s not a title hangover.
Terry Labonte's 2nd Championship and Bobby Labonte's 2000 title also ended up being the final time that both finished in the top five in points in their respective careers.
Woohoo! Some rise against in the background
This season is the reason The Chase expanded to 12 drivers.
Tony just missed and then finished 3rd in points I think over the last ten races.
NASCAR couldn’t let somebody that hot get left out again.
imagine the scenes if Kyle Busch does a Tony Stewart 2011, that would make this comment section so funny.
That Rise Against song from Siren Song in the background gets a thumbs up from me.
2 videos in a row for NASCAR videos with Tony Stewart! Joe Gibbs success for Iceberg, now this!
I’m not counting Kyle Busch out lol. Still over a dozen races left for him to improve and win.
@AxelD95 No dice this year but still got two wins and nearly made the final 4. If things lined up for him at Martinsville and if he had a good car at Phoenix then we could've been looking at 3x Champion Kyle Busch.
Lewis Hamilton after winning 6 Championships in a row: I don't have such weakness
he is going for 4 in a row
You forgot about 2016
You mean Mercedes
Give him a bad car like Damon Hill ‘97.
weakness : nico rosberg as a teammate.
Championship hangovers
Brad Keselowski
2013
Here is another suggestion
Comback seasons
Joey Logano 2018
Jimmie Johnson 2012
Maybe Brad K 2014
coming back to this and reading his 2005 to 2006 standings
HIS STATS WERE BASICALLY THE SAME!!!!
4:40 **PTSD intensifies**
During quarantine I watched the whole 2006 season on RUclips, and seeing Tony miss the Chase was weird to see. This was also kind of a tough year for Jeff Gordon too. Not a bad one but not a Jeff Gordon dominance season like people were used to
Every comment is on Kyle Busch lmaooo
This will be a good one
Championship hangover: Damon Hill 1997
Ooh an F1 one
Owly123 he almost won at Hungary that year but suffered from a hydraulics issue on the last lap. He was passed by Jacques Villeneuve for the win.
MSC 2005 would also be a good one
Jacques Villeneuve 1998-1999
Fernando Alonso 2007
@@FMecha Alonso and Hamilton were disqualified For Illegal Team Orders
6:33 I’ve always found that tidbit hella interesting. Stewart, Biffle, Edwards were 1 2 3 in 05, and ended up 11 12 and 13 in 06
You should do a series called "near-championship seasons" where you talk about times drivers came close to winning it all.
Ex.
Carl Edwards- 2011
Mark Martin- 1990
Bill Elliott- 1992
Kevin Harvick 2020?
I mean that’s pretty much the missing rings series
The shocking part of all? Had Stewart finished top 15 at Richmond in September, the results of the Chase in 2006 would have netted him second in the points. He was out of the playoffs that year but raced with more gusto knowing he had something to prove.
0:41 to say that Rise Against riff caught me off guard would be an understatement
Championship hangovers
Kyle Busch 2020
Kyle Busch 2020
Darrien: creates championship hangovers
Jimmie Johnson: wtf is that
Championship Hangovers: Terry Labonte 1997 (particularly right after Michigan in June. Came into that race top of the points heap, eventually finished 500 points out of the lead in 6th).
Dale Earnhardt Sr. 1981
Rusty Wallace 1990
Kurt Busch 2005 (pun very much intended)
I also recommend "Runner-Up Hangovers", where guys second in the points have off years to follow. Carl Edwards has 2009 and 2012 to his name as well as Jeff Gordon in 2008 for starters.
Championship hangover: Dale Earnhardt 1992
He made a bad seasons video for Dale Earnhardt's 1992 season
@@spheredhawk67 That's why you won't see too many videos in this series I reckon. There's not many "hangovers" that qualify as good seasons.
2006 was also a disappointing season for the 2 drivers that finished behind Tony Stewart in points the year prior (Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle)
You know what I think you should do, a comeback series. Seasons of drivers who had a season that made them come back to their former glory, such as Dale Jr in 14 and 15, Jeff Burton in 06, Kasey Kahne in 12, Sterling Marlin in 2001,
Later in the year we’ll might have a “Kyle Busch 2020” Video like this
I couldn't stand Tony Stewart growing up, but man do I appreciate the heck out of him, and miss him as a driver
Labonte had a huge hangover after his 2000 championship
2005 was the end of Him
You should do a video where you cover what sponsors and car numbers and drivers you would want if you created your own nascar team. Run through the reasons why those drivers and just for fun go all the way down the list from monster energy series to trucks. A video I think you’d do really well
Can you do a video on Brad Keselowski in 2013. He’s one of my favorites but his 2013 season is the epitome of a championship hangover, literally since he was buzzed on the champion stage
Championship hangover Brad Keselowski 2013
He shouldn't have had all those miller lites in the interviews
Kyle Schafer 😂
Done
Video idea: Nascar's one season wonders
So make a few videos talking about some drivers that did amazing in one season and then never got close to repeating it
welp this makes me sad :(
:(
@Black Flags Matter I like Championship Hangovers drivers that have a NASCAR champion the next following year having wins despite missing the NASCAR postseason chase.
Great video you should make more championship hangover videos.
Championship Hangovers: Jimmie Johnson 2017
Nicholas Arias he was good that year…
The summer slump he had that year caused him to spiral into decline the last 3 years.
After the crash, Jimmie and company were never going to compete in a outdated Chevy SS against the more efficient Camry's and Fusions.
@@thefossillcave Everything was going well until Knaus' laptop got stolen. Neither he nor Johnson has won since.
Black Flags Matter: Don't forget Tony Stewart got championship hangover in 2003. When he won the championship in 2002.
Hooray! New concept!

Where are the videos?
Championship Hangover: Jimmie Johnson (2011), not a bad season per se, but it was pretty quiet with only 2 wins, also notable because it was coming off his five consecutive.
In almost every great NASCAR era comes a time where champions have a very bad season after winning the title the previous year it could be:
Lack of practice/qualifying
Ineffective crew changes
Ineffective car setup
Drivers mindset/determination
Team change
Manufacturer swap
It could be a combination of those listed factors that could make a driver look very bad.
Championship hangovers:
Dale Earnhardt 1981-83:
Dale Earnhardt burst onto the scene in 1979, winning his first race and ROTY. He did one better in 1980, shocking everyone by winning the Winston Cup. He looked to repeat in 1981, but things soon went south. Halfway through the year, Earnhardt was having a solid campaign with a slew of top tens and even a pair of runner ups before car owner Rod Osterlund suddenly sold the team to JD Stacy. Earnhardt drove just four races for Stacy before they had a falling out and Earnhardt left. He finished the year with RCR but left to find greener pastures. Earnhardt struggled with consistency all year, and failed to finish ten of the thirty one races that year. In 1982, he joined Bud Moore’s team, and would return to victory lane at Darlington’s spring race. Despite this, 1982 would turn out to be worse than 81, as Earnhardt was even more inconsistent, falling out eighteen times, including the final eight CONSECUTIVE races of the year, and slipped to twelfth in points. The year was feast or famine, as Earnhardt finished no worse than 10th in the races he did finish. The first third of 1983 was more of the same. After DNFing for the second straight year in the Daytona 500, Earnhardt did absolutely horrendously, dropping out of seven CONSECUTIVE races from Spring Rockingham to Spring Nashville. After an 8th place rebound at Dover, Earnhardt turned his season around, having an insanely consistent summer stretch, picking up two wins, including his first of ten wins at Talladega. He failed to finish just once in this stretch. Earnhardt remained solid for the rest for the year despite four more DNFs, and improved to eighth in points. He finished 1983 with 2 wins but 13 total DNFs. Earnhardt returned to RCR in 1984 a new and improved driver, and the rest is history.
Kyle Busch 2020, Jimmie Johnson 2011, Brad Keselowski 2013 (maybe), and Jeff Gordon 2002.
As an Earnhardt Fan 1992 was a Pain in The Testicles
Second place hangover. There was a crazy stretch before the current playoff format.
Would have to imagine Tony Stewart's fans were thinking along the lines of "Where was the Tony Stewart of the latter part of the season when he needed those wins to make the Chase?"
When you finally start dominating during the chase, but you're not in it.......
The next Championship Hangovers episode after Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch would be Jimmie Johnson in 2011, 2014, and 2017, along with Jeff Gordon in 1999 and 2002, Dale Earnhardt in 1995, and many more
Request: Bad Seasons: Dale Jarrett 2003

I would say Dale Earnhardt in 1992 can be another good example but a bad seasons video was already done describing that season.
Jimmie Johnson 2017,kyle Busch 2020,brad keslowski 2013
I don't think anyone will be surprised if BFM uploads "Championship Hangover: Kyle Busch, 2020"

Jesus christ, man. You know you can put all of your requests for a video into one comment, right?
@Alexander antonov yes
6:47 Nascar gives Soda Pop to the winning drivers? Damn, they really don't want to portray the image that it's drivers are athletes
This season for tony remind me of the 2005 season for Jeff Gordon he got five wins but miss the chase for the championship because of bad luck and poor performance in the summer months
Late, but here’s a good seasons idea;
Good Seasons: Jimmie Johnson 2002-2003
Good Seasons: Jeff Burton 1999 (or 2000)
1997-2001
For other forms of racing:
Le Mans: Peugeot 2010
Super GT: Tom's Toyota 1998, Nismo 2000
MotoGP: Valentino Rossi 2006
WRC: Tommi Makkinen 2000-2001
I like this new series Championship Hangovers. Yeah I don't think 2006 for Tony Stewart was worth a bad season. Stewart was competitive except when he broke something on his shoulder in the Coca Cola 600. Then of course some bad luck and he misses the chase but is still competitive.
Championship hangovers: Brad Keselowski 2013
Championship Hangover: Kurt Busch 2005
A lot of people say Kyle Busch 2020 but I’d rather say Brad Keselowski 2013 Missed the Chase, didn’t win until Charlotte 2 but would come back swinging in 2014.
2011 Jimmie Johnson, 2013 Brad Keslowski, 2014 Jimmie Johnson, 2017 Jimmie Johnson
Tony should have been parked for the rest of that 500. I remember watching that and thinking how crazy that was.

Others:
Jimmie Johnson 2017
Dale Earnhardt 1992
Other almost championship hangovers:

Kyle Busch 2009
Jeff Gordon 2005
Greg Biffle: 2006

Request: Bad Seasons: Elliott Sadler 2000
It was Joe Gibbs 3rd in 05. Labonte won in 2000, Tony in 02.
This is basically what 2011 could've been if Stewart was unsuccessful at entering the chase with points
Request: Bad Seasons: Bobby Hamilton 2000
