  • This week on the farmlearning channel, we're teaching you how to tie the orange fencing knot! This knot was commonly used in fencing when mild wire was in, and is an interesting knot to know.
    In this video, we'll show you how to tie the knot and test its strength. After learning your knots, you'll be ready to start fencing like a pro!

    Great videos. I send all apprentices your way to learn a few skills. Would be great if you could show an end knot under tension. We like to alternate the direction of wraps around the strainer so they don’t twist it off the strut, but too many people don’t centre the knot, leaving gaps that lambs can get through

      I’ll keep that in mind for when I shoot my next end knot video coming up in a few weeks.

    Good morning, Tim, thank you for the fencing tutorial, I will have to watch it again as the knot looked brilliant. Cheers

    A Tip here Tim for display purposes. Rather than using plastic over the wires , maybe spray them with flouro traffic paint yellow/blue. That stuff will stick to anything.

      Thanks for the suggestion. Check out my old knots videos that’s exactly what I did. Plastic is WAY better. The wire heats up as you bend it and paint cracks straight off. Plastic wrap stays put and is easy to see on camera. Cheers. Hope you’re liking the videos

    Have had to use fencing wire(discarded ) a couple of times . Once to tow a car 80ks and once to tow a motorbike 160ks. Didnt think it would work. I was surprised.

    Thanks Tim. So I see you’re using the Fence-Line strainers. Are they your “go to” vs the Strain Walker Pro from Wireman ?

    as you say at the end, the tightness of the bends weakens the knot. i was hoping you would have strain tested the knot with the plastic sleeves on it. if the sleeving increased the breaking strain it might mean that thicker sleeving might improve breaking strain even more. i know that when the wire snaps it goes straight to the ground but i still get nervous watching it and want to chuck an old towel over it.

    So Tim.... for years I've been using the strainer/speed knot you showed us 6 years ago... the orange knot is a little more involved.... in your opinion is it that much better than the speed knot?

    • @FarmLearningTim
      @FarmLearningTim  9 месяцев назад +4

      No the speed knot is better

    Is there a chance you could test the braking point of wire crimps vs gripples. I have been wrapping on either side of wire crimps so the barrel pruner doesn’t catch the wire does this make the wire joint stronger ? Is it better than a figure 8 that is wrapped on either side?

      Wrapping makes no difference. Check out this video ruclips.net/video/R009-OzJE9w/видео.htmlsi=UX4FyhzL-5WHJkYe

    What is the best knot to use thus far?

    • @FarmLearningTim
      @FarmLearningTim  Месяц назад +1

      Depends on the application mate. Plain wire, the best so far has been the Donald knot. Featured this one in several straining videos. I like the orange knot for soft wire. Same as tex brown. ruclips.net/video/ngWdp96iMd0/видео.htmlsi=aidU8pQuTM8HOCCb

      @@FarmLearningTim I make mini vineyards and every now an then something runs into a wire and I go fix it. I buy what I thought is high tinsel, but it never snaps when I twist the handle. So for arguments sake we'll call soft. In this case I've been using the figure 8 knot. If you know grapevines you know how heavy they get at full growth for the season and all that weights on a couple wires. I've never had a figure 8 break, but wanted to know if I should look into something else. Honestly I just like the art of making knots in wire.🤙

      @@caburtnett1980 figure 8 is not a straining knot but is stronger. So ideal for your situation. Cheers mate
