  • In this tutorial, you will learn the step-by-step process of downloading elevation data from NASA EarthData portal, absolutely for free.
The specific type of digital elevation model (DEM) data that we will be downloading in this tutorial is Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) DEM data, which has an approximate spatial resolution of 30m x 30m.
In this tutorial, we cover a number of components of downloading SRTM DEM data using NASA EarthData web portal such as signing up, specifying the area of interest on the map using a rectangle/ polygon, selecting the right instrument/ project, downloading the required number of DEM tiles in bulk or separately. Finally, we make use of a GIS software like QGIS to merge DEM tiles together to create a continuous, seamless DEM raster.

Thanks for such an elaborated yet a small video. I appreciate your contribution but unfortunately the things are changing so rapidly that keeping up to date is hard, especially when you are using data links. Can I suggest to develop the versions of your videos especially data download and pre processing.

Thanks. How can we freely have 5m or 20m resolution DEM data?

I never saw the elevation as you mentioned. How can I see the elevation of different locations?

Once you import it to QGIS, you will see the min and max elevations of the raster in the layers panel. Additionally, you can do a pixel-level inspection of elevation values using 'Identify Features' tool in QGIS

What is highest accuracy data that can be downloaded online for generating dem

It might be tricky to answer this since you mentioned 'generating a DEM'. What we are doing here is essentially downloading an already generated DEM from the portal and using it as is. The highest resolution you can get with SRTM data is 30m. The availability of very high-resolution DEM data (even with an accuracy of less than 1m) is highly dependent on the geographic region and is often a commercial product.
