I love the way that the centurion has carefully chosen the list of offenders to avoid Pilate's inability to pronounce R's, only to find that he's invitied Biggus Dickus with a lisp.
Close. All the guards in the movie were told that they wouldn't get paid for their time if they laughed. They wanted the reactions to be real, and like they actually couldn't laugh. They were paid in the end, but it makes some scenes so much funnier when you think about their circumstance.
I remember seeing this in the theatres when it first came out in 1979; thought I was going to piss laughing. We (me, my buddies and pretty much the entire audience) laughed so hard we missed some of the humour. Had to go see it again and again One of the funniest movies ever made - even if it did/does offend the odd evangelical
This scene and the first one with Pilate where John Cleese is the centurion are great because John Cleese has often played the leading authority figure in a scene. Here he is subordinate to someone else and he's just as good in a subordinate character role. And Michael Palin and Graham Chapman are brilliant, especially Michael Palin. The timing and expressions - just magical elements of the comedy.
2:00 “The two soldiers in the back, Eric and Terry G, had little to do in the scene except to try to conceal their laughter at Pilate’s lisp, so the close-ups for those two consisted mostly of laughter. During Terry G’s close-ups, [Michael was] crawling just below camera range, about knee-high… Michael and John were making obscene threats in order to keep Terry laughing. Then, to facilitate Eric’s laughter during his close-ups, Michael carefully inserted a spear up his tunic.” OH MY GOD
Jonathan Ross is such a fan of this movie, he has started to impersonate the great leader of Jerusalem and is enjoying this charade so much, he is unable to stop himself from continuing.

"HE WANKS AS HIGH AS ANY IN WOME!"
0:46 I love how the Centurion is about to speak then double takes on how Biggus dickus pronounces Caesar
I thought he was doing a double take at the realization that Biggus Dickus was a real person
@@jakeedgell591 I thought he did that too.
I may be of thome athithtanth if there ith a thudden crithith....😅😅😅😅
@@jakeedgell591 I think his double take was due to the fact that he realises biggus has a speech impediment also
The best thing in the scene may be Cleese's double-takes and increasingly horrified expressions as the centurion.
"He's a wobber!"
"And a wapist!"
"And a pickpocket!"
lol.

I saw this film on its release. The Biggus Dickus scene had me literally rolling on the cinema floor laughing, I was gasping for breath.
Almost like the people apon hearing Biggus’s list.
Damn absolutely brilliant if you are watching this tip your hat to creators!! We can’t sit around an forget the classics!!!!!!
Pontius Pilate has a rhotacism condition and Biggus Dickus has a serious lisp.
whotacism
And they're too oblivious to notice.
I like to imagine all the Roman bigwigs have a similar condition

Much funnier when they're actually struggling their hardest not to laugh
Well except for Cleese.
In the end when Bigus dickus addresses the crowd the commander himself put his head down to conceal his laughter XD
And a pick pocket no no. There's always that one person who doesn't get the joke.
