Just to clarify: I apologise about my comment concerning Dolores, in hindsight this was indeed hypocritical when taking into account what I said about Bruno. I wasn't aware of the cultural context of the noise she makes and only connected it to her gift because of that - heightened sensitivity is a very common trait of autism. Thank you to everyone who pointed this out ^^

Just wanted to point out that the people that killed Alma's husband are definitely not rioters. They are shown in a way that represents more closely guerillas or paramilitaries. Just wanted to say this since in Colombia we already have the problem of shifting all the violence on riots when it tends to be a deeply rooted violence issue. Other than that great video I'm so happy you talked about this

Someone gives a kid a birthday cake at their party. the cake is obviously made for them, but since it's a party it gets split amongst the guests. One kid at the party notices that the cake has strawberries and therefore thinks that the cake is made specifically for them even though it's not their birthday.
Colombians (and even other latin/hispanic cultures) finally are getting representation but it's becoming over shadowed by people who think every character is 'queer coded'.

I’m not gay or trans, but sometimes I really hate trans/gay headcanons because it almost always materializes as justifying gender norms. By that I mean a perfectly straight binary man will like flowers, and then everyone will call them trans or gay because they are slightly feminine. Like their female traits need to be justified in some way, which ironically just further defines gender norms. Because a straight man can’t POSSIBLY like flowers or sun sets or share their emotions, because then that would make them a girl. And to be particularly relevant to the topic, a straight girl can’t be strong naturally because then that would make them a boy. It’s ironic because LGBT is all about challenging gender norms and showing that gender is a spectrum. No two people experience their gender in the same way, and that’s okay! You don’t need to justify someone’s actions by saying “oh their queer so it’s cool.” Let my straight fellas wear makeup and identify as a straight male at the some time. It isn’t gay to be a femboy.

    • @Trickpants
      @Trickpants 2 года назад +683

Gah, you took the words right out of my mouth. I am trans *and* gay too, and I don't like everything being hc'd as queer because it often tries so hard to have representation that it loops back to confirming biases and stereotypes. And often it ignores the original message of the piece that is being talked about. I love that people see themselves in something, and I love when people write fanfics because then I can separate the medium from their world - I know it's *them* writing it with *their* perspective of the characters, and I can choose to enjoy it or move on. But when it comes to headcanons, it's difficult to talk about the story without the headcanons getting in the way - I love how many different perspectives there are, but it often feels like a headcanon goes beyond a theory or a wish-fulfillment and instead becomes a belief.
And *yes* let our straight buddies wear make-up or dresses or whatever they want and still be straight! *Full* representation!

That's what most people would criticize about the LGBT+ representation in High Guardian Spice. There's this femboy character Snapdragon that I, along with many people, thought was just a feminine boy but they made this character trans. Not a problem but it annoys me when writers don't allow for femininity in men that doesn't immediately correlate to their sexuality or gender identity. It becomes almost reliant on stereotypes and could be classed as internalized transphobia/homophobia.
It doesn't help that the few masculine cisgendered boys in the show are depicted as douchebags.

I totally agree. I think there’s too types of head canons. There’s hc based on stereotypes which is weird and as an LQBTQ person I hate how everything surrounding the LGBTQ community has to be put into stereotypes. And then on the other hand there are hc based on personal experiences and relatability which I think is totally valid because it’s just a harmless way to feel a little less alone in your experiences if you imagine a character you relate to to have the same experience. But either way I think it’s toxic to fight others for having different opinions because in the end we’re all fans of the same movie.

I have OCD myself, and I can attest to the fact that very often it is damn similar to, and even overlapping with, superstition.
It doesn't have to be the same thing, no, but it is very closely related and has the same roots and similar triggers.
I like to explain it like this; Think of the human brain as a big mixer-table. Superstitions and rituals are common among humans all over the world, but OCD is when that dial is pushed up and stuck at a high number.
But rituals especially are something very universal.
Just look at athletes. How common isn't it that they do the same thing every time before they run to do the jump, or that little dance before going down the ski-slope, or similar things? It is because a small ritual helps your brain get into the mode for the task at hand, telling it "It's go time". Even athletes who aren't superstitious have rituals, and when you ask them about it they will admit that "no, I don't believe they make me better. But it feels good." And that is because it helps your brain switch tracks in your train of thought, so to speak.
And superstitious or cleaning rituals are kind of similar, since they get your brain out of the anxious mode and let you relax. Of course, this can become an unecessary crutch, and that's when it can impact your life and you should seek help. But doing things like knocking next to the door after you've locked it to easier recall that you did in fact lock it does no harm.
I could go on, since this is a fascinating subject for me, but I'm gonna quit now before I get tunnelvision.

She loved her family even though they treated her badly. Plus, she's great angst material and I'm honestly surprised that there's more Camilo angst than Mirabel angst.
I also agree that the people in the fandom tend to ignore the cultural aspects of the film as well as the main themes and focus more on headcanons. @@iridiumSerpent You named two characters that I also could have named lmao and even then, how many exist doesn't decredit my own experiences growing up and whether I was exposed to them? I'm not out here claiming white privilege isn't a thing or that POC don't get discriminated against greatly compared to white people, but that growing up I had both my family and peers discredit my heritage in the States because I'm not a darker skinned Latina. And that in MY youth, I didn't have exposure to Hispanic characters that looked like I did. Most of my family is exponentially darker than I am. Many Westerners have this impression that Hispanics are primarily darker skinned (Not necessarily black but not white either). This can be seen in how even with lighter skinned Latine characters Western media creators will draw them darker because they view it as more "Hispanc"; and GOD forbid you accidentally draw a Hispanic person too light. The fact that people refer to Pepa as mestizo despite her being one of two other triplets who just happens to be lighter skinned, but then not the other two, shows a clear disconnect between how people view her being a part of her family. Which isn't right. If she's a mestizo, they all are, because Colombia's demographic made up largely of European/Indigenous/Afro mix. But she's the only one referred to that way because she's white. The fact I know someone personally who said "that lady doesn't belong in that family" because she is white, isn't right and frankly super offensive. I've already seen people draw her as dark as her siblings and it's like, why can't she just be how she is? She's not less Colombian for being white. I think it's great that more POC are getting spotlighted in media and I want for more of that, but Pepa is not less Hispanic because she is light skinned and despite your experiences, people who discredit that do exist. The fact y'all even feel the need to come onto my comment and try to discredit my own experiences with how I'm "wrong" shows that despite the experiences I've gone through, they're irrelevent because I'm a white Latine person so therefore, I'm not ACTUALLY dealing with any real sort of racism. At least my skintone didn't stop an old coworker of mine telling me to go back to my country. Fortunatey only the worst sort of people recongize my ethnicity. But you know, go off.

It's kinda offensive , no ITS offensive take some traits of the character that are meaningful to some culture and say "OmMGg hE HaS (insert a disability) and (insert a gender/sexual atracciton bEcAuSe THeY DiId soMeTHing" it's like saying that now when I drink mate (an argentinian drink) i have TOC.
Dolores sounds are not tics, we often do this "oops" when we hear some sort of drama or we heard something we are not supossed to hear.
This type of things feels like a meme, "gringos discover colombia" because most of people who do this are from the USA or any other first world country, most of latinos are trying to educate people about their culture but... welp, they don't hear anything about our words and decides to do some werid things for headcanons and trying to excuse as "THIS IS MI KIN"

I've seen a lot of people complain about the film itself because of LGBTQ+ headcanons. People started to think that Disney was TRYING to overtake the main storyline, but I feel like if people just opened their eyes a bit, they'd realise every film/tv show/video game has loads of these headcanons. I'm normally fine with people having these headcanons, but when people treat them like actual canon, it makes others (particularly those in Colombia, and those who've actually experienced family trauma) feel more invalidated, and tbh, it can make us in the LGBTQ+ community feel slightly invalidated aswell (when people use stereotypes to headcanon characters, especially with Luisa, who's headcanon of mtf I find kinda gross, having lots of OC's myself that aren't trans but are still feminine/masculine/androgynous compared to their gender)
Overall, I completely agree with what you've said! It's fine to headcanon characters, but letting that get in the way of what matters is kind of ignorant, and I wish I saw more people delve into the history behind the plot (like this video did), rather than focusing on unrelated aspects.

You are allowed to make headcanons. It's your imagination so let it run wild. But it becomes a problem when:
-When you start claiming that your headcanon is canon
-Your headcanon can be easily debunked because of multiple reasons (creator saying it isn't true, something about said character's childhood, etc)
-Your headcanon is completely based on stereotypes
...and etcetera. You can add on to the list if you want.

It is disappointing that in the youth's pursuit for queer representation and breaking gender norms, they've been relying on harmful stereotypes.
Like, all those people that would joke about Shawn Mendez being gay are no better than homophobes calling someone "gay" in the school hallway. We want femboys and sensitive men who can dress well but when they exist, we call them gay.
Same with all these characters in Encanto. Luisa is muscular so she *must* be trans or a butch lesbian. Camilo is a shapeshifter so he *must* be genderfluid. Isabel doesn't want to marry a man so she *must* be a lesbian. Mirabel is an artsy, dorky, chubby girl with glasses so she *must* be non-binary.
Popular headcannons exist in all fandoms but to insist that headcannons are gospel and "implied canon" goes against the very concept of what a headcannon is.

Reminds me of what they did to betty in rugrats. Instead of adding another kid with lesbian parents, they took the pair that was supposed to represent a "non-stereotypical couple" and that can work and doesn't have to be a bad thing, and made her a lesbian because she fit all the stereotypes. And when people openly discussed their displeasure for that, all we got was "did you see her in the original show, she was OBVIOUSLY a lesbian", like did you see that the entire show was displaying different kinds of family situations and how they can all work and aren't all stereotypical, and then you assigned her something, changed her, because she fit a stereotype?!
I would have liked it so much more if they had expanded Angelica's friend group, maybe give her and Suzie a boy friend (as in, a friend who is male) who had lesbian parent(s). That could have been cute, and could round out the cast a bit more. Not to mention, you could make him the sweet and sensitive type so you can have Angelica try not to be so mean or harsh to him. it'd be a cute story, maybe he has a Cynthia doll too, and he's getting bullied, and Angelica stands up for him and is friends with him due to a shared interest. That could have been really cute and given Angelica a lot more opportunity to grow as a person and be more likable without her losing herself.

I appreciate that you called out how not all cultures have the same standards for how family issues should be delt with. I've heard countless people apauled by the idea of forgiving problematic family members, in relation to Encanto as well as to situations in my own family. I'm honestly always kind of disturbed whenever I see tik-toks of people saying they would have and Mirabel should have blown out the candle or stitching that one of someone blowing out a candle in response to the picture scene. As a Colombian who has experienced generational trauma and has some very toxic family members that in some cases are far worse than Isabela and Alma, blowing out the candle would not be an option and wouldn't even be a thought to those of us in these positions, in these types of closely-knit families (which is basically everyone in South and Central America). Family is sacred to us, especially our mothers and grandmothers. The enemy here isn't the family, it's the violence and trauma that comes from political unrest. I've seen lots of debate on who the people who killed Pedro are and to be honest, I don't think it matters. Although there's a clear time period Disney was aiming for, the violence in Colombia caused by politics is an ongoing issue that continues to cause harm to countless families, and when talking about who doesn't deserve forgiveness, that's what should be talked about. It frustrates me that a lot of these issues of people not understanding that their culture isn't the only one or the "right" one is never listened to when it's coming from someone from a culture that doesn't conform to what English speaking countries believe in, so I also want to thank you for putting in the time to get a Colombian's perspective on the film and featuring it here as, unfortunately, most Colombian's opinions aren't likely to be heard outside the Hispanic community without a little help.

To be a good character, the character does not need to be black, part of the LGBTQ+, or think in a certain way. Sure, I support LGBTQ+ people in movies, but PLEASE respect the messages behind them! Artists are getting hit hard for not making an LGBTQ person in their shows. As I'm sure, this is what no one wants. The LGBTQ+ Community and the Black Community want representation, and I'm all for it! Heck, run wild and make some movies! Convince people for NEW movies! Don't attack the older stuff. I loved Encanto, and I think it's good that so many people can relate no matter what community they are a part of! Or if they aren't a part of any community! @ *Shadow Nightguard* • ...why was the general Black community brought into a conversation that had absolutely NOTHING to do with us and who were not mentioned in this video? (This is a serious question, btw) I ask because I haven't seen ANY comments from non-Latino Black folks trying to "claim" _Encanto._ Friendly reminder, however, that Afro (Black) Latinos DO in fact _exist,_ so seeing Afro-Latinos in videos proudly claiming _Encanto_ is NOT a "headcanon", and it's NOT an attempt to "steal" someone else's culture; it would quite _literally_ be THEIR _culture_ AS WELL, same as their White Latino counterparts. Blacks in _Encanto_ weren't simply placed there as some sort of weird "woke" propaganda. They are LITERALLY a part of Columbian _history._
I've seen TONS of videos from people trying to "show" why Isabela is a lesbian, etc, (despite her previously planning on running away with a secret boyfriend in the original script) but I've seen NO comparable videos of Black people doing anything other than showing their love and appreciation for the film and characters or just being indignantly angry on Mirabel's/Bruno's behalf. Pepa's husband Félix is BLACK. All three of their children are BI-RACIAL, but the youngest, Antonio, came out taking more after his father than mother. Blacks are not trying to "claim" or "steal" anything in _Encanto;_ there is LITERALLY _no need to,_ because there were several examples of unambiguously BLACK Latino characters ALREADY featured in the film. And yeah, there are videos out there expressing excitement about FINALLY not being overlooked (as the media tends to ONLY promote White Latinos on screen to the point that many in the general mainstream seem to be ignorant of the fact that there even IS such a thing as an "Afro-Latino", because most people only think of folks who look like Jennifer Lopez or Jenna Ortega when they think of "Latinas")
I'm curious of what headcanon or narrative you feel that Blacks are trying to steal, as it obviously _really_ bothers you, judging by the VERY carefully cultivated words in your comment. It bothered you bad enough that you felt the need to bring it up under a video that _wasn't even ABOUT_ Black people in the first place, a video that ultimately _didn't even mention_ us.

I always felt weird when the people thought Isabella is lesbian. I’m bisexual myself, but I did not feel Isabella would be lesbian just because she doesn’t want to be arranged married.
I’m born in a medium-strict Indian family, and it’s a 50/50 chance that out of 5 sisters in the family, one of us will be arranged for marriage. My elder sister is one of them. Although she was arranged with someone really rich and nice, she still denied it. Why? It’s because she wanted a freedom of choice for herself.
Does that mean she’s a lesbian? No. It does not. So, just because Isabella refused to marry a man she has no interested in, doesn’t mean that she is lesbian. And yes, it does not mean she’s not too. I totally respect anyone with headcanons.
Just wondering if people who make headcanons hate single woman who doesn’t want to be forced into marriage. They seems to be labeling them LGBT+ every time these characters comes out.

People often take allegories and metaphors way too far. Isabela's song is primarily about breaking away from expectations and perfection, and that can resonate with a lot of people for different reasons, be it sexuality, gender expression or just escaping the pressure of being perfect. Same thing with Camilo: its kind of a running joke that if you ask a trans person what superpower they'd want, they'll say shape-shifting, so when people see a shape-shifter they might automatically hc them as trans or gnc.
The root of all of this is a lack of explicit and positive queer and trans representation. Of course all minorities are underrepresented, but because you can't tell a person's sexuality/gender at a glance, it's really easier to hc a character as queer. Of course, some headcanons are more equal than others: people can and do fall into tropes and stereotypes when creating said headcanons. But the important thing is not to take those headcanons too seriously: that goes for the people who create them and the people who don't. If you read Isabela as a lesbian, don't call everyone who doesn't homophobes. If you don't read Isabela as a lesbian, don't accuse those who do of "forced diversity" or "pushing an agenda". At the end of the day these are fictional characters and your personal interpretations are not a hill worth dying on.

Like I was so happy when I saw Luise because FINALLY - we get a masculine representation of a female that still screams femininity despite all that muscle. But *they* just had to ruin it.
It rubbed me so much in the wrong way to hear their reasonings of saying she's trans just because she's mascular and taller than everyone that's shown.
Isabella - it's fine if you HC her as gay because you relate to her situation but if you *reason* that she's gay because she doesn't want to marry Mariano ( notably a man she didn't know ) then that's where I put the line.
It's just stupid and I legit read someone say that Julieta and Pepa are in a poly relationship with their husbands and that FELIX AND MIRABEL'S DAD ARE IN LOVE SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE LINE 'two guys fell in love with family madrigal'. Honestly cringey and disappointing.

As a Hispanic person with a family dynamic like Mirabel's, I think people should be able to enjoy encanto the way they want to, as long as they're not reducing the character to just that headcanon and forget what makes them a good character. I think Lesbian or Bi Isa is a neat headcanon, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten all the pressure she had on her to be happy and perfect, or all the trauma she probably still has. And attacking people for headcanons/ shaming them for it/ making fun of their headcanon because it isn't canon is dumb.

I wish people would stop immediately jumping to stuff like “ISABELLA IS LESBIAN! THAT’S WHY SHE DOESN’T LIKE MARIANO!” I have nothing against gays/lesbians, but not everything has to be gay! When people don’t act a certain way, you can’t just jump straight to conclusions like that! Some people are just different.
Just because Isabella turned down Mariano, that doesn’t mean she’s into women and that men are completely off the table. Don’t forget that people can still turn down others for reasons other than sexuality. For example, we’ve seen that Mariano is a hopeless romantic who REALLY rushes into things. He’s sweet and means well, but that just doesn’t sit right with Isabella. (As shown by her reaction to him wanting 5 babies) Isabella is not looking for a relationship with Mariano, and is CERTAINLY not ready to be a mom yet. If you met a person you barely knew, who wanted to marry you right away and already have FIVE kids, would you really be okay with that? Isabella certainly wasn’t!
The story I see with Isabella is freedom for self-discovery and self-love. She’s great at making flowers, but she also wants to grow different plants. She’s finding a new side of herself that her family hasn’t allowed her to explore, and loving every bit of it. She’s not looking for love from someone else right now, because she doesn’t need to. She’s already loved, not just by her family, but by herself. This whole time, she had to put up an act, to be perfect, but now she’s free to explore her own interests. She’s free to use her powers to make whatever plants she likes. Isabella found a new artistic side to herself, and finally loves herself entirely, flaws and all.

I think Luca can be analysed as being about hiding identity and sexuality; when I watched the movie I felt it was very obvious that the conflict could be a metaphor for the same struggles a queer kid faces, and I was definitely not alone. Some have said that it's even explicit representation, and I kinda agree, it's a kind of "if you know, you know" situation wherein you could immediately recognize the metaphor if you relate to the character, but straight people who watch it and isn't familiar with that struggle, probably wouldn't recognize it.
Encanto is VERY different. It's one of very few Disney movies to look at interfamilial relationships (as opposed to having the protag be an orphan/parents nowhere to be seen) and also explores a culture heretofore not seen in a grand scale animated movie. I immediately saw the messages of intergenerational trauma, neurodivergence, and healthy relationships (communication, setting boundaries etc) being showcased in the movie, which are all very topical and current buzz topics, as it were. I really thought this movie gave mooore than enough material for people to discuss how best to try and bridge the generational gap and how to go about fixing the cycle of trauma, and relate to characters based on your childhood trauma lol because the Lord knows I immediately saw my mom in Luisa, and me in Isabela, both my aunts are Pepa which is kinda hilarious but... You get the point.
And here everyone is discussing sexualities and gender identity. I mean, I agree that people look for what they relate to, but damn. There's already so much on offer here to discuss. When people did it with Luca I understood, because the movie lends itself to that, but this movie? I guess I'll just discuss the pressure to perform perfection as an eldest child and carrying all the unspoken expectations of your family with my therapist and the very small group of fans who are not obsessing over Isabela being a lesbian. TL;DR: Yes, Mirabel forgave her Abuela quickly, but are you really gonna tell a 15 year old Muggle in the middle of who knows where to cut off her family matriarch?
See with the part about people saying that Mirabel forgave her Abuela too easily: yeah, she did, but also she didn't.
As someone with a parent I butt heads with, I know Mirabel is never going to forget that fight. She's never going to forget how Alma yelled at her and genuinely believed that Mirabel was to blame for the family and the home falling apart.
But here's the thing, a thing that Mirabel said during the fight: "I love this family." With families like this, you just... forgive each other. You may not want to forgive, your heart may hurt when you think of having to be near them, but your heart still craves that bond that it knows is possible.
My sister treated me terribly when we were younger and I wasn't the best sister back, but I still adore her with all my heart.
My Dad is... not the best. Not punchy or anything but I've gone to my room crying my eyes out and feeling like every part of my spirit was being torn apart. I still hug him and say I love you. I still hop onto his bed and watch RUclips with him. It's just natural.
Let's also not forget that while Mirabel might have recognized that her grandmother was the one killing the miracle that Mirabel has still been the family scapegoat for ten years since they couldn't blame Bruno for everything wrong now. She had all night to sit by that lake and think of every reason why Casita dying really was her fault.

Wholly agree with all this. Adding on, Mirabel forgiving Abuela is the emotional climax of the film, there's only so much room left. So what are our options? A timeskip showing Mirabel only fully forgiving Abuela after months if not years? Mirabel being cold to Abuela to show she hasn't fully forgiven her, thus giving us a more bitter ending? How much does Abuela have to pay (This is after destroying the miracle which she knows was very much due to her) before we can consider it a good enough time to forgive? This is a film, we only have so much time, and we still want that satisfying ending of everyone coming together to rebuild. As you said, Mirabel will never forget the bad things that happened. Who's to say that the more personal forgiveness didn't come later, while what we saw was surface level for the sake of presentation?
A lot of people seem to forget that, people do bad things, often without truly realising. That doesn't mean they can't change, or get better. Does that excuse what they did? No. But does it mean that you should just cut them out and never forgive them? Well, aside from really nasty situations, also no.
If you demand a pound of flesh from people for every injustice they've done, all you're going to do is ruin them right back. And if that someone is trying to make amends, then why punish them? Forgiveness doesn't mean "I excuse everything you did and you're 100% good in my book." It means "I acknowledge you're remorse for what you did and your attempts to improve, and I still love you enough to try and move on."
(Also an aside, I very much empathise with you and your dad. I too have a tricky relationship with my dad. There are times I borderline hate him for how he behaves, but much of it is due to past traumas and severe mental illness, so it's a massive grey area. There is genuine love buried in the suffering, and I just can't write him off as a bad person and leave him because of his episodes.)
Good lord that's wordy, my apologies. You can tell I've been holding on to this for a while XD

When I asked them why they expalined it in a way I wasn't familiar with because I am more on the innocent side of things. However, because I'm like this it is very difficult to find someone I relate to in movies, video games, books, or anything really because so many people, even people who make stories, think straight characters have to be, as you said, "cardboard-cut-out stereotype" when that isn't always how it is in real life. Hi! I’m a queer Latina! Not that it matters much, but I wanted to throw my two cents in, since I’ve seen some stuff about LGBTQ+ head-canons for Encantó. Honestly, the great thing about art is its subjectivity. If a character speaks to someone, and connects with part of their identity, that’s special. I think that sexuality head-canons are generally harmless unless a character is explicitly stated to be something else. In regards to this situation, it’s still okay to see the portrayals of these characters as queer representation! (Or not to see it that way!) As long as Columbians are not being talked over when it comes to actual historical and cultural themes that exist in the movie. There’s no reason that Isabela can’t be a lesbian while also feeling the effects of generational trauma, the expectations of young Latinas to get married and have children, etc. Again, as long as people are respecting the historical and cultural influences on the film, there’s no reason that they can’t head-canon virtually anything. Just because a lot of people head-canon something, it doesn’t make it canon.
Also, about mental illness/neurodivergent head-canons, they are totally valid too! While, yes, a lot of Latino influence is visible in Bruno’s superstitious rituals, that doesn’t mean that they couldn’t be part of a mental illness/neurodivergence. (Personally, it reads as OCD compulsions to me, someone with OCD who has some compulsions rooted in superstitions that are sometimes culturally influenced. I’ve done the salt over the shoulder, and I recognize Sana Sana. I’ve also had counting and touching/tapping compulsions like the ones that Bruno demonstrates.) Mentally-ill Latinos do exist. More to that point, a lot of mental illness can be rooted in generational trauma, societal pressures, and familial pressures. Things like that can be an extension of larger cultural issues at play, especially in Hispanic cultures.

People take their headcanons of Luca and Alberto being gay as canon when that's absolutely not the case, they are just meant to be besties. Boys can just be friends with each other, girls and boys can just be friends with each other, girls can just be friends with each other. Sometimes it's nicer not to have a huge romance subplot and having a movie be just about friends and family. Not everything has to be gay, it's okay see yourself in the characters and see your problems in the characters but don't take it as canon.

Isabella is probably just waiting for the right guy or when the right guy shows up she will fall in love with him.

woahh, i definitely agree! as someone who's queer and latino, this topic has been sitting on my mind for a good while now. i personally am not new to queer headcanons, have done them myself and i get it. representation matters, especially in poc spaces. but to me, in the case with encanto, it feels more like non-latino people not having a way of fully relating to the struggles, since some are very deeply set in our culture, so they decide to force the only other things onto the characters that they could possibly relate to ; queerness and neurodivergence.
but on the other hand, ive seen quite a few homophobic people slide into these conversations, so im always hesitant to look at posts discussing this issue. you'll almost always see someone going on a rant on how queers "force their identities on everything nowadays". which sucks, since that just muddles the actual topic. well, thats how i see it at least.

I totally agree with your about Isabella. If we had more information about her love life or something I could maybe accept the headcanon more. However, she was being forced to marry someone she didn't want to. She was free from that after her song. The whole point is that she was living the life Aubela wanted her to lead, not her own life. People are overlooking these messages. (Yes, we do need more LGBTQ+ rep but we can't overlook messages in movie.) I also don't like the Lusia headcanon either. It doesn't sit right at all

As a writer and comic creator, other people's head canons are my worst nightmare (they're ok within reason as in it takes the actual characters personality and the stories metaphors into consideration instead of trying to grasp at straws). It's disrespectful to me as a creator and to the characters. One of my mcs is bi, it's not her personality trait, it's subtle but still obvious and she just acts like a human, that also doesn't mean that every character around her is gay in some way either 🤦‍♀️. The message of the story has nothing to do with the sexuality or gender presentation of the characters let alone any sort of romance, if it was then that's how it would be tagged in the genre.

I hate how I see so many people say that Camilo has “iDeNtIy IsSuEs” when literally no where in the movie says that or even hints that. Sure you can head canon it, but I’ve seen so many people say that like it’s actual fact and not just a head canon. And of course the whole “he’s gender fluid” is bullshit, he literally just shapeshifts
I also don’t like how people are trying to say that Bruno has Autism or ADHD or OCD just because of the way he acts. Those are literally just superstitions, (throwing salt, knock on wood, not stepping on cracks) I’m not saying that it’s impossible, fine, you can head canon it, but just out of him doing just that? People are just forcing these stereotypes.
And then there’s people who wann believe isbella is lesbian or ace just because she doesn’t like Marianno. Now I’m not saying that that is impossible, but they are literally just saying that just because she doesn’t like the one guy. That doesn’t mean anything. It could just mean she just doesn’t like HIM. Jeez
So many stereotypes among some of the fans it’s horrible, people want to get rid of stereotypes, but then the moment a character does one little thing people are so quick to label them. WHY DO PEOPLE CARE SO MUCH ABOUT LABELING CHARACTERS? It’s so annoying and defeats the purpose of “progression” (still love the movie)

The first part of your comment is canonically incorrect. His official character description describes Camilo as “a teen that doesn't know who he is yet” and the same idea was heavily implied by his voice actor in an interview. That does pretty majorly imply if not right out state he has SOME kind of identity issue, as most teens who can’t shapeshift do anyway. And while I’m not a fan of the nonbinary/genderfluid Headcanons either (I personally see him as pansexual for no other reason than I think it would be neat), I don’t see the harm in it. The genderfluid shapeshifter trope has existed for so long I don’t think we’ll ever be rid of it tbh.

I honestly did get queer vibes (not just 'she is a lesbian' tho) from her character while watching the movie for the first time, because her whole thing is discovering who she is outside of what Abuela said she "needed" to be, and not necessarily the marriage bit 🤔 I think this one is just a case where we see our own experiences somewhat reflected, and Isabela just happened to be the one in this movie to fit the bill.
But I have to agree the other headcanons do seem less grounded in the movie and more like wanting a favorite character to be x thing (especially Camilo, who is just a minor character)

On the topic of Mirabel not cutting her abuela out of her life, it is just a more powerful message that she didn't. Forgiving in Colombia is difficult, specialy when it's related to historical and social trauma. We had a lot of violent conflicts in our history and each one was a consecuence of the other. But each one blames the previous group as the root of the problem.
My point is: Mirabel forgiving her grandmother after acknowledging her story and her trauma is the message we needed. To let go. To stop the cycle of violence and start healing. That's the most vital lesson a country like Colombia needs to hear, and from a kids movie from all places!
