Breakdown Voltage Of Zener Diode

Zener breakdown occurs when the voltage across a reverse biased Zener diode exceeds the diode’s reverse breakdown voltage. When this happens, electrons are able to tunnel through the depletion region and conduct current. The current flow causes the voltage drop across the diode to increase, which in turn increases the probability of more electrons tunneling through the depletion region. This process continues until the diode is destroyed or the current is limited by some external circuit elements.
