Listening to your review the one question I had was “Does it work with Linux?” as I just don’t buy any hardware that is Windows only. Thanks for making Linux compatibilty part of your review. Very helpful 10/10.
An awesome review and video as per usual, Adam! 😆👍👍 As ever, I appreciate you for taking the time to go into such a high level of detail and thoroughness with your testing and overall conclusions. ☺👌 Cheers to you, my man! 🍻
I'm using this thing to play ps3 on my macbook and it's awesome. The latency is definetly there but i got used to it real quick, i'm using the official avermedia software for preview and i'm not noticing any latency fluctuation. This is probably the best bet for using a laptop as a display.
I am just ready for the next evolution of these cards we need a 4K 144 Hz box and ideally it would be nice to see one that is compatible with HDR pass-through compatible tone mapping and possibly even allow us to use display port or HDMI 2.1. I know that this is a big ask but the technology is already available to utilize it we just need someone to develop it.
The tech isn't exactly "already available to utilize it" unfortunately. HDMI 2.1 chipsets are still super expensive and hard to get (especially with shortages), there's not even switches/splitters with it out in the world. And no one knows what to do with all the crazy features like VRR that really make no sense in a capture scenario, etc. It'll be a while
Good review, thanks! It is my understanding that you are using (or have used) a Lumix G7. Does this card work with the G7? It is not listed in the compatible device list and did not get a word back from avermedia just yet. I thought you might know. I am pretty close to buy it, but it would be nice to know if it works with my camera (G7) before I do :). Thanks again for the review!
I contacted Avermedia regarding camera compatibility. Apparently my Canon M6 Mk2 who is able to output clean 10bit 4k 4:2:2 is only recorded as 1080p. I don't get it, why is even camera compatibility? This device should don't care about what gear is connected to, only the signal received. Anyone has test it and found that is true? I'm quite puzzled because the info in the official page is quite bad, I hope they are wrong.
So..., I got one. And yep, it can capture 3840x2160@29.97p I think one problem I had at first was that was set in pal at 25fps, didn't let me choose UHD resolution. In fact it didn't let me choose it in recentral until I used OBS first. Know I would like to see If 4k 25fps are possible and also what quality can I expect from this, It will be 10bit 4:2:2? I don't thinks so, anyway, what tools do you recommend to check for video quality information?
So uhh, Adam when it comes to Android, Windows 10 and 11 HDMI output, would I need to get a hdcp splitter for the capture card? I still have it in my room unsure if I should buy a splitter.
Pretty sweet! So if I was connecting my XBSX to my Mac mini with the hdmi splitter I should be good to live stream correct?!? Would you recommend this AV Cap over something like the Elgato HD60 s+?!?
One thing I'd like to know is if this would work with a dreamcast VGA cable which is connected to a VGA to HDMI convertor. my original elgato craps its pants and shows a black box.... so I'm unable to capture footage BUT passthrough still works.
Don't really see the use for streaming its overkill and wont be seen, recording yes tons of use cases. I'm already thinking about getting one or two. No need to record internally is always a plus to me. I'm probably gonna get one this next month with my upcoming shoots. I use an elgato HD60 sometimes to record my camera externally, also have a couple other capture cards / cam links but I like testing others. I have some off brand 4k capture card which has an input and output for passthrough. maybe I should compare the video quality on both.
It's not about it being seen, but it being compatible with what you're using. If you're playing at 1440p144, you need a capture card that supports that format, even if you're only streaming 720p60
I didn't get what you were saying about playing through the preview. Which application do you recommend to use if I'm planning to play my console through my laptop monitor?
I was going to buy the Elgato cam link in the next month so this has definitely given me food for thought. I can’t find this on the webs at the mo……or Amazon. Any idea on its release date mate?
i tried the camlink and footage doesnt look like camera footage AT ALL. this seems to be different, at least close to what the camera would look like if im shooting straight through it. do you feel the same? in that case i would get it.
OBS isn’t a capture program. It’s a layered compositing streaming/recording program. Everything is done on a buffer with dynamic frame times. VirtualDub JUST displays the feed and dumps it to disk, runs at lower latency
Hi, I know you are not recommending playing over Preview, and if you would use other software, but since VirtualDub is not supported on Mac, what would you recommend instead of OBS?
I actually ended up testing a bunch of apps yesterday, and on Mac you can get the least latency and best quality on app called Quick Camera, the latency is barely noticeable. Your card reviews were really helpful, I watched literally all of them last week 😂Thanks!
Does this work in multiple apps simultaneously? That's my current issue with the Cam Link. Or other USB capture card that can do 4k30 to multiple apps you would suggest? From ElGato it looks like the only cards that support multi-app & 4k are PCIe. Thanks!
Hi, may I know if I can record 4K gameplay from my ps4 pro? Because I tried many other USB capture device but they dont let me really record 4K from the ps4 Pro becaues it outputs at 4k60hz, most card will just convert the 4k60hz to 1080p60, so what about this one? Thanks.
Hello did you ever figure this out? I am trying to do what you wanted to do in 2024 with PS4 Pro because my Xbox Series X capture feature is broken using external hard drive so I want to record my PS4 Pro If can help thanks
The USB spec and cards at the time did not support capturing 4k60 over usb The newer cards (Elgato 4k x, AVerMedia live gamer ultra 2.1, asus 4k pro tuf box) can do 4k60 over USB if you have a 10gbps usb port
@@EposVox how about 4K/30 would it be able to capture that for the PS4 Pro? I want to get the El Gato 4K X but this one you reviewed is $99 + tax so 30 FPS for a while might now be a deal breaker? Can always just render the edited clip in 60fps ahaha
Awesome to see such a serious competitor with *that* low a latency and at such quality and price point. It's bonkers! By the by, that shirt is to live for! Where'd you get it? :D
@@EposVox ha, yeah I found your video on it after making that comment. Thank you, I'm a noob, and just learning, I left a more detailed explanation as a comment on another video of yours, so let me try and ask this as simple as possible, if I'm not gaming, or anything else, just want to run my camera into my laptop for occasional streaming in 1080, is the extreme cap, that's now apparently much cheaper than when you reviewed it before, a better option than a cam link, or would I be better of paying the extra $30 for the live streamer cap in this video even though I don't need the 4k?
@@EposVox by the way, I've only learned as much so far to know that I would need a capture card, but knew next to nothing about them, until finding your channel. Not that I have all that much more knowledge now, but were it not for you, I'd still be pretty lost. At least now I fell I have enough practical advice that I can at least have some ability to make a decision of what to buy, and how to get started. Thank you for that. Does this require a HDMI splitter? Can i for example connect it to directly to camera or Rasberry Pi, with no splitter / monitor, and capture it to PC? (On Linux).
@@EposVox thank you. It is so confusing. I just want to capture SBCs on a desktop or laptop, without needing extra display or hdmi switchers and splitter. I do have Elgato Cam link, and it is really wonky, need to force some resolutions, replug many times, and if I am lucky it will work. And when it works, picture quality is horrible.
Do you think my 720p 60fps PCI-E capture card (it's a timeleak HD72 or something like that) would outperform this in playing on my PC? I don't notice any lag using it, but I'm looking to up the quality of my recordings. Might need to go PCI-E since I don't have a TV to output it anyway.
