(Ex-West-) German here. I grew up in Cold War 1 (1947-1990) and during that period we all were used to think that this will never change. The divide will be forever.
But when it did change (1989-1991), we all could not believe it. So, any future expectation can be proven wrong.
    I love these videos =)

Gut. Zusammen was zusammen gehört 🇩🇪🍻🇩🇪

As a Korean, I really enjoyed this video.
I'd like to add a few things.
First, there was a Korean Provisional Government in Shanghai created in 1919 to centralize all independence movements. In 1940, the Korean Independence Army was formed and faught in the Burmese and Chinese fronts among the allies. This Korean Provisional Government (Right), as well as the Korean Reconstruction Preparation Administration(→Later Korean Peoples Republic(Not DPRK) (Left) formed in Seoul were originally the supposed rulers of Korea, but was oppressed by both the USA and USSR because they didn' want Korea to be independant.
Another point is that one of the major reasons for the North Korean economy's collapse was the Sino-Soviet split. Being one of the only communist nations ti border both countries, North Korea was very worried that they would be squashed between a fight. Therefore, in order to achieve neutrality, they went for a non-alligned policy, similar to Yugoslavia. This as well as an excessive amount of Military fee increases led the North Korean economy to fail. Lastly, there were plans to invade North Korea in 1996 to invade North Korea, as they were going through a major food shortage, didnt have nukes, the USSR was gone, and China wasnt powerful. However this was rejected by the Americans because they wanted "peace".

Joseon dynasty had tributary relationship with imperial China but Joseon was not subordinated to China. The Chinese tributary system was a largely symbolic Confucian world order with its basis in trade & philosophical relations between foreign states & various Chinese dynasties. Its relation to the sovereignty of some states was flexible & diverse. Larger states (e.g., Joseon Korea & Japan) enjoyed full sovereignty in both domestic & foreign affairs, & their intl status cannot be considered ' dependent states'.

Hey great video as always! But I do have to critique on one major point on the reasons against reunification, which isn’t as heavily influenced by China or even the US. At this moment, reunification efforts are highly unlikely due to the stark contrast in government policies between the two Koreas rather than the sole pressure from other countries. For example, North Korean government is a Communist Dictatorship, and if reunification happens, these government officials can no longer have “power” over their citizens. For South Korea, it would be extremely difficult to develop North Korea due to cultural and societal differences of citizens who have faced decades of oppression from Communism. So unless both government officials are totally okay with losing some sort of political power (highly unlikely) reunification is virtually impossible.

5:50 If Korea reunifies in a cooler Geopolitical climate, then I could see conscription being abolished and military being scaled down like most countries following the collapse of the USSR. If however, the Koreas reunify under today’s Geopolitical climate, they will likely maintain their military for different reasons. If reunified under Pyongyang, the military would likely be used for suppressing dissent and quelling rebellions since the liberal populace would not tolerate Stalinist style communism. If reunified under Seoul, the military would be needed in order to protect against a potential Chinese invasion given that China’s aggressive behavior towards it’s neighbors and the fact that China doesn’t want a US-aligned county on it’s doorstep, especially with a land border that could be used to invade China.

There's no way it can unite under Pyongyang, to put it simply, they can't afford it. The Korean south has grown so distant from them, they don't see them as brothers, but as another foreign neighbor now. Opposition would be more than what US had for the Vietnam war. Going in spite of these would mean that either China has to press the button to axe North Korea, or Kim dynasty in general, or South should peacefully finish the Kim dynasty in the friendly terms of China. Whatever be the way, Chinese acceptance for the southern takeover would only be the way to the unification.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the last 30 seconds. The length of separation is a massive outlier not many people seem to realise. I would love to see a Korea unified, but honestly I think that it is highly unlikely to happen in our lifetimes. Maybe in a few 100 years, but not anytime soon. What I think will realistically happen eventually is the collapse of the Kim regime of the North and the establishment of a different regime in its place, as the 2 Koreas will remain separate countries forever. The Kim regime is unstable and cannot last that way forever. It's artificially propped up, and if China does fall like the Soviet Union I don't see modern Russia keeping that regime alive in any way shape or form. It will collapse on itself, and the lack of interest from the South will prevent unification, so effectively leaving the North a separate country. Say hypothetically, a Capitalist and liberal regime takes over the Kim regime of the North. I believe it still won't do anything towards unification as the 2 countries are effectively alien in culture from one another due to length of separation. You cannot recognise them as the same thing anymore. It would be like unifying Brazil and Argentina. It just isn't going to happen unfortunately....

    • @tigervalley62
      @tigervalley62 2 года назад +14

@J Silva: Inner Mongolia could return to the rest of Mongolia. Xinjiang could become another Turkic nation, Tibet could return to the Tibetans and Hong Kong could be free and independent again. I agree with you that traditional Sino China won't split. But a lot of territory the CCP holds as I've stated above never really belonged to China until fairly recently. Only makes sense that territory goes back to it's rightful people. Whether China allows that or not is a different story. Every empire or "Dynasty" in this case eventually collapses. This is just my thoughts and opinions by the way.

A forgotten part of the korean war is the heavy bombing campaign in the north. It is largely why the kim's could keep a strong grip on power, as they were prefered to the Americans who had destroyed nearly all the cities and towns in the north. It is likely a big reason for why reuniffication may be difficult even today(and a bit why they are so poor. Of course the north has had enough time to recover from it, so it doesn't excuse the poor living conditions. However it may have made the government's grip more powerful, as nearly everything in pyongyang or any big town or city was built after the 50's.

In terms of land size no, DPRK became smaller instead
But they got valuable land, cities and the shore

For little Korean perspective, reunification in modern day is like natural disaster for young people live in here. both north or south dont wanna reunite but someday it will happen, and we cannot control it anymore...

Would be done like when Hong Kong and Macau were returned to China. You don’t get rid of the border right away but take many years or even decades before border is completely erased.

yea, problem is the lifestyle of the north and south. the south is more wealthy than the north so North Koreans will most likely be looked down upon and I can assume school bullying will happen. lots of things the south will have to sacrifice for the north to develop more when unified so yea.

It depends on how much South Korean will pay for such unification.

And even then, the cost for reunification was great for west Germans. It would be far greater on the South Koreans.
