I learnt bharatanatyam in faculty of pe4forming arts Baroda, M S university. The Head of Department was teacher from Kalaksetra. An excellent teacher, and versatile artist. The staff consisted of Tamil guru from Tanjore gharana, a parasi lady and an Asamese teacher. Back in 70s
I could hardly Speak English, moved to BARODa from a small village. I was bullied for my appearance, my accent. In the nAme of culture WE WEre not allowed to
WEAr OthEr dress thAn hAlf sAree or Saree. I WAS too young to hAndle SAree.Some of us were doing two degrees at a time, few were working part time. Due to any reason we cannot participate or come for dance rehea4sals we were cr8ticised , ridiculed, and insulted in front of all the student. Later we had a new teaching staff who was rich had a political influence. She tried every illegal things yet nobody wanted to stop. I raised my voice but was asked to resign or succumb I resigned and moved to Australia.
Later I heard there were lot of trouble in Department. Even police had to intervene.
Yes kalakshetra should be a example for other institutions. Salutation to bravery of girls. Girls should be brave in all stages of life. 😊
