Thank you for such an excellent lesson and explanation of noto!
You are welcome! Thanks for reaching out.
Perfect timing on the video release. There is a batto/noto challenge just this week that some guys are jumping into using shinken. The idea is to draw/nukitsuke and noto as many times as you can in 30 seconds. Extremely risky for a beginner, and a dangerous challenge to suggest to anyone not well trained imo. Hopefully the challenge will at least push individuals to really learn a good smooth, properly timed chiburi/noto, and not worry too much about super speeds.
Of course I took part, I use a steel iaito though, I never use my sharps unless I am actively cutting with the sword.
I never understood why noto was "fast" during the forward motion, but slow on the back motion. It totally makes sense now, get that blade out from behind so it can be deployed if needed. Very interesting.
🙋I used an iaito. But honestly the kissaki on it is pretty nerve wrecking too. 🤭
Hopefully the challenge doesn't affect us into creating bad habits for the sole purpose of speed 🙏
Thank you for this wonderful lecture! Apart from tameshigiri, noto and gyakunoto are my favorite to practice and execute.
Thank you for this video. I'm a very new iaido-ka who's still learning the very fundamentals. Videos like these are super helpful and informative. Cheers.
Thanks very much.
Hmmm, the concept of applying pressure between the chiburi and noto was a new revelation to me. Very interesting. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video with really nice level detail, information and instructions!
thank you! We have plenty more for you!
Great video! Solid body mechanics and excellent technique.
These are the concepts that I find make the art so deeeeep, and so much fun. Though my idea of fun is another person's idea of torture! Welcome to Iaido: Part 1,000 Chapter: 450, detail: 2,010- the different nuances of kiriage. Haha, just to illustrate how I suspect others view it. Thank you, very enlightening video.
Thank you Tom for great instructions👍🙏
My pleasure!!
! excellent presentation, the explanation is straightforward (unlike traditional classes with no discussion). I want you to continue making these videos so will be supporting through your patreon.
Thanks so much for reaching out! And for your support, it's greatly appreciated
Yey, I am first in comments! Superb video.

I showed this to my brother and now his sword start sparkling water
One month extreme beginner here. My question about Noto is how is the blade supposed to fit inside the Saya? I have seen RUclips clips where the blade enters the saya so oily smoothly on it’s own making me wonder if there is something extra secret going on? Saw one instructor sanded down the tip of the blade so it would not poke the insides of the Saya.
Saya are designed for the blade to fit. Saya are actually TWO pieces of wood glued/lacquered together. Saya are not one piece of wood hollowed out. And the more you oil your blade the more of the oil gets in the wood from the inside, this helps prevent the Saya from drying out. As far as sanding down the blade so it doesn't go though? I've never heard that. If you have good technique, it's not necessary
Great question, thank you
Great Video Sensei. Why or from where does the setei horizontal noto comes? Thanks
That set has a heavy influence from Muso Shinden Ryu which has that style noto and other particular movements.
@@TheBudoAcademy Thnaks Sensei. Those that noto might be influenced by the horse riding use of the sword? Because Setei is a combination of different Iaido and Iaijutso styles. Also I see very difficult to make noto horizontal with the wakisaki sword on the Obi. Thanks
I really wish I could get into this some place near me 😑

is gangi maki style tsukamaki suitable for iaido?
Yeah that's fine. I believe it's on those Musashi models at tozando.
Hey can I ask if you have any kind of recommendations on where to purchase katanas?
Yes Tozando
@@TheBudoAcademy Thank you, I’m also thinking about signing up for distance lessons. I have done research and watched many videos but I still consider myself to know basically nothing, would you recommend the associate or student level membership for someone of my skill level?
