  • A look at Cumbernauld town centre, college building and St. Mungo's. Interior and exterior shots of centre along to a period synth driven score.
    The quote at the end is from the Chief of town centre design, Geoffrey Copcutt. He is basically discussing his many items the town centre was originally supposed to have but were never put into place after his departure was more or less enforced. Written in 1995.

    As a boy of six i loved this building. I look back with 40 year old eyes and can see how ugly it is from the outside but as a boy i couldn't care about that, all i knew was that it felt great to explore. It was like a futuristic mess, cyperpunk-chaos, full of odd shapes and alcoves, tunnels and mazes...plus the chance to pick up a new Star Wars figure from John Menzies and a video rental..happy days.

    Coming back to this video and it's just great. The music, visuals etc. I think there are a few examples of "liminal space" here too.

      Thanks! To think this was all shot on a Sony NEX5 and now my iPhone 12 Pro Max video would make this look like a mid 2000s point and shoot camera. That is to say, image stabilisation, light capture and resolution of this video now look horrible. It’s a shame the whole place is to be demolished, turns out this is an important record now.

    As a child of Kirkintilloch in the 1990s, this was the closest big shopping centre other than Glasgows city centre. We would often drive through to Cumbernauld on a Saturday afternoon and visit the place. Those big, bright red doors and the brown brick effects on the walls and even on seating areas bring back a lot of memories. Used to be a great wee sports shop on the ground floor, can't mind the name of it. Used to spend my time in there or either in Beatties.

      Ah the Beatties 😃 my gran lived in Abronhill and whenever I stayed over I would always visit Beatties. I’ve still got the Tamiya kits I bought there and built at my gran’s dining table.

      I lived in Moodiesburn until I was 8 and moved to Glasgow. I loved this shopping centre and the alien's head building. It all seemed so futuristic to me. I occasionally visit for the little buzz of nostalgia, but God it's all so ugly and dated. As I kid it was exciting, what with all the shops. We did our weekly shop at Wm Low and sometimes had lunch at the Red Balloon. I had karate lessons at the Tryst on Saturdays and the Link on Thursdays. Palacerigg was great to visit too - shame all the animals are gone now. I remember my friend moved from Moodiesburn to Cumbernauld and I thought she was so lucky.

      Tbh there's some really good example or architecture where they weren't afraid to try something different. These days, most things seem pretty basic and nobody wants to take a chance :\

      Thanks for that just watched it again there. There’s a fair few parts in this video now thankfully preserved here because they are gone or closed off at present.
      Check my channel as I made a 30 minute video from my visit to the top floor!

    @treguard1982 Once again, thanks for compliments. I try and look for interesting patterns for motion shots to create scale, without sounding pretentious. An example in this
    The centre is actually operated by 3 owners I am now led to believe, but certainly Phase 1 (the original Copcutt led structure) operators denied permission due to data protection apparently.
    I shot this with the Sony NEX-3. A new gen of small mirrorless cameras giving DSLR quality. With careful management of the power.

  • @MartinHannett_
    @MartinHannett_  11 лет назад

    No problem. The battery life of these cameras is great. I have since upgraded my camera to a Sony VG10 (google it). This shoots in 1080i and looks better, it also has a brilliant quad-capsule stereo mic for unreal sound! Yes managed to go the day without being spotted. The Subway project I never did manage to complete but I got runs from about 3/4 of the stations, sadly most are now renovated and the point was to capture them before renovation. I will upload here eventually.

  • @MartinHannett_
    @MartinHannett_  11 лет назад

    I also visited Preston Bus Station which has been recently approved for demolition despite almost unanimous public support and a wild corruption in local council office regarding supposed cost to renovate. An attempt to list the building is ongoing. Again I will probably just upload the runs to this without editing to this channel. My next project that I am getting equipment for is a video similar to this with similar music looking at Glasgow's M8 motorway.

  • @treguard1982

    I know it's not as much a problem these days, but I remember my old mini DV camera used to pick the sound of the tape motor up :D

  • @MartinHannett_
    @MartinHannett_  12 лет назад

    @treguard1982 Thank you my friend. I have always taken an interest in videography but my idea's on how stuff should be shot is limited by my equipment.
    In this film I should have employed steadycam and tripod but the centre operators denied me permission to film. As a result, I had to use my camera's flip out screen and just pretend to review photo's whilst actually shooting.
    Once again, thanks. More to come including Glasgow Subway project :).

  • @MartinHannett_
    @MartinHannett_  12 лет назад

    @treguard1982 The Subway project is an attempt to capture the 1979 modernisation of the Glasgow Underground before it is modernised again throuought 2012, with work already commencing at some stations. Sadly, another kitsch relic is lost to a public demand for boring white and stainless steel mush...
    Sorry for all my replies I do rabbit on a bit haha.
    Thanks.

    Hi I've been looking for some examples of what Cumbernauld looks like and this video quenched that thirst very well! You have to admit, the architecture is not particularly pleasant aesthetically - but I do think it has a cinematic quality to it. Can I ask what's the music? It reminds me of Kraftwerk a little bit!

    • @MartinHannett_
      @MartinHannett_  Год назад

      It’s a piece by Francis Monkman called Trouble Spots, it was part of a long line of ‘library music’ used in TV and film production. Should be in RUclips and he has many many other great tunes including pretty much everything form the Glasgow Subway video also on my channel.

  • @MartinHannett_
    @MartinHannett_  12 лет назад

    @treguard1982 switch, I was able to keep it all on one battery. The battery life is pretty good. This camera has no viewfinder only the LCD panel. I was able to hold the camera at my mid chest and flip the screen out pretending to review footage and remain undetected on CCTV but actually shoot at the same time. Sorry I meant to say the examples of motion shots are 2:04 and the small clip at 2:36 as well as the pan along the college structure.

    It's a crying shame about Preston bus station. Whether or not the maintenance costs were really as high as they made out I'm not sure. I suppose the problem is that raw concrete used in construction has never taken very well to damp (If you check that HIT video about Cumbernauld, you can see damp setting into a few of the ramps during the chase sequence).
    That sounds like a very nice camera, and it's nice to hear that it has a good onbaord mic. Do you find it picks up the sound from the camera?

  • @treguard1982
    @treguard1982 11 лет назад

    Sorry for not replying sooner. You did well to get all those shots on one battery, and you do get a very nice sharp picture with your camera. Did you get through the day without being spotted even with using the flip screen?
    No you're not rabbiting on, it's very interesting to hear about it :)

    @Rydo182 Well you've definitely got a good eye. Shame about the centre operators not giving you permission to film, but not being a visitor to the area, is was enjoyable to watch. Did you end up having to keep a spare battery or charge it again? I've not had a camera in a while, but the flip screen used to love the old battery juice!
    Ah! Is that the cycle tunnels or is there another subway? There's a guy on youtube who rides through those tunnels on his commute.

    What a shame. A genuinely gorgeous building, which nonetheless failed in its sociopolitical requirements and responsibilities. Would love to see an ambitious government try a town megastructure again.

    Town Centre planners must have been on Crack building the endless walkways that basically take you nowhere & i still laugh at the thought of everyone who gets lost even though they'd been there 100s of times ? Stonylee Road i stayed in the worst house ever & glad a moved away years ago........Sorry but what a dump ?

    • @MartinHannett_

      The idea of the time was for multi-level. Get people away from noisy and smelly traffic. If you have a look into the Newcastle Skywalks or the original Birmingham Bullring (which is an amazing 30 minute promotional film of when it opened) then you can see this across the country. That's why there are so many useful underpasses across the country.
      The current town centre layout you need to bear in mind is a disaster of 50 years of modifications, demolitions, re-workings, renovations, closures etc. The original building is all but lost amongst all the garbage.
