I genuinely really like the kinda alternate box design shown here. I’ve always loved when games had alternate box art, and while this isn’t technically that, it does feel clean getting rid of all the text and stuff

I bought a second copy of splatoon 2 on eBay (to be able to play with my little sister, this was a while ago before splat 3), and I was surprised to find out it came with the special box that was shown in this video! I lucked out, I guess lol

Around the time I bought my Switch was when Scott’s Woz episode on Instruction Manuals first came out. When I went to buy Odyssey I saw the Traveler Guide bundle, and I remembered how the Woz episode lamented how Instruction Manuals were a dying art in the modern age. And so I bought that one.
And yeah like the episode said it’s BS that something like Instructions is a luxury superfluous item now, but gosh darn it the Odyssey Traveler Guide is well put together and takes me back to the old Mario games and their fun instruction manuals.

    • @genderender

Gamecube instruction manuals were really top notch from nintendo. I still kick myself for being the dumb kid and not keeping them in their cases, because I've lost almost all of them since i was like 12. The thing scott was saying about "identity" with the manuals was really felt in all the exclusives I had for gc

@@jorgemtzb9359 Depends on the person and the game. For instance, I would personally only play the game in the car if I knew the ride was gonna be at least 2 hours, whereas I would probably just read the guide and wait for a bigger screen if it were only an hour or less and I thought the game was worth it. And yes I'm talking about me as a kid.

Wait a minute! I actually have the case for the Breath of the Wild starter edition. Found it in the mud next to a pile of stuff that someone threw out. I had assumed it was part of the collector's edition, but had wondered why a piece of a collector's edition would be abandoned without the cartridge like that. Until now, I assumed haste was the reason. It's clear now that because it was something for newcomers rather than collectors, it simply wasn't important enough to keep. Now five or so years later, I could probably sell it for a decent amount, if not for two details. First of all, with it being such an interesting item, I don't want to part with it. And second, even if I were willing to part with it, it's water damaged due to it being left out in the rain prior to finding it, thus devaluing it. All the same, it is the first piece of Nintendo Switch memorabilia I ever obtained. And I do still plan on getting a used Breath of the Wild cartridge to store inside it someday. Only ever played the game on Wii U.

I ended up getting the Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2 Guide bundles as a Christmas gift alongside the Switch. Splatoon 2's Splategy Guide was a pretty solid book that went in depth on how to get started and had plenty of good hints and tips about the weapons and maps.

I think stuff like this is a big reason why I think companies shouldn't completely abandon physical media. I think there are a lot of advantages for publishers who put games out on physical, such as making it more accessible for parents and grandparents and others who aren't gaming literate to purchase a game as a gift. But also for stuff like this, where you have an opportunity to make your product stand out among the rest with a bonus, even if it's one as simple as the guides in this video. I also think having stuff like this bolsters the perception of these games. Like Odyssey, BotW, and Splatoon 2 were big releases in Nintendo's first year and I think having these editions helped drive that point home.

I remember I was working at Walmart electronics department when the started releasing those. We didn’t have a section for them because they didn’t match UPC with the regular game so we had them under the lock case. Unless the customer specifically asked for them I usually went off by how the customer treated me. If the customer came in and seemed friendly and they asked for one of those games I’d just go “oh we also have this version that comes with a strategy guide at no extra cost” but if you came in with an attitude I’d just sell them the regular version.

While in the other two you have to make a lot more choices to make it, like do you include every moon, every sidequest, etc. and it’s hard to strike a middle ground between the bare minimum and the bare maximum, especially when the other two games have stories while splatoon kinda doesn’t

This made me curious as to which edition is my BotW copy. Grabbed the dusty cardboard box off of my shelf and I can’t believe it’s the one that comes with the map. I remember getting it alongside my Switch as a gift back in 2018 I believe, only grabbed the game case and left the rest of the cardboard box in my shelf to get all dusty without ever glancing at the rest of the contents that came inside lol

I actually have the Explorer's Edition for BoTW and I think it is pretty cool! It was the same price as the regular edition, so it just made sense to get it. I worked at Best Buy during the Holiday of 2017, and I would always tell people to get the Explorer's Edition instead of the standard edition.

Hey, I bought the Breath of the Wild one! That's because I never bought the game on launch because I bought the Switch for Monster Hunter XX so my first American game was Bomberman R

I remember thinking those were cool, but kind of pointless for me since I got those three games during 2017. Got Splatoon 2 with my Switch during summer, bought Breath of the Wild digitally in the fall using eShop cards I got for my birthday, and got Super Mario Odyssey as a Christmas present.
