Even though I don't and probably never will carp fish but I still enjoy your review of the hooks. You explain everything in detail and do a great job and I would take your advice anyday. Thanks for sharing sir . Stay safe
Like always thanks for the pointers and your opinions i_Fish I know I will soon be on my way catching carp in the near future. I grew catching carp with my father making boilies from Wheaties. But it's been a while. Thanks for your context and videos. 👍🏼🎣
Love these hooks, G Carp specialist was the first carp hook I ever got and I have never changed to a different one! For me the qualities that sold me were the thickness so I don't rip apart the carp's mouth, and the micro barb since I fish barbless and can easily push the barb down flush with the point.
I just bought 4 packs of the g carp specialist R, thank you for the video i have more confidence in them now! I lost a big carp last week when my L2 lazer sharp hook bent, looking forward to trying the g carp
It makes no sense to put corn on hair rig. You will catch a lot less fish. Put it on the hook. #4 is perfect. Gamakatsu sizes are the same everywhere. But if you buy a european brand, like Carp Spirit or Fox or Korda.. those can vary. Fox and Korda are reliable though
thank you for this amazing video, your 25 years of experience no one can beat for sure. people think that fish is dumb but fish is very intelligent they can make a decision in a split of seconds a little shine on the hook or little bigger hook can make them spit the bait and run away
Don’t know if you’re gonna check on your old video but European here. Spade end hooks are usually used for finer/subtler fishing methods, like float fishing or traditional feeder fishing and not hair rig style. Despite the size of some of those hooks, they are rather meant for smaller and less feisty fish, at least than big carp. Spade is supposed to better guide the (mainly mono) line in those methods when properly tied, leading to better presentation of the bait and hook sets. For more heavy duty applications and/or specific methods, like carp fishing with hair rigs etc. we much rather use eyed hooks. Trust me, almost everything has its own meaning, just have to know when to use it ;) Altough yes, some hooks look way to weird and in my opinion, they are just a gimmick :p Also, the ones you say have the best shape, in carp hooks terms seem to be sort of a continental style hook shape or some variation of it, at least it’s the closest thing they remind me of and what you could find with stronger wire and eye instead of spade.
i check by your comment is too long and has too many points and i don't reply to such comments. You obviously like to write long comments and i don't want to be dragged into a rabbit hole
I'm curious, if you use size 6 of the gamakatsu specialist hooks for boilies (I'm assuming you are using hair rigs for boilies), what bait or how are you fishing when using say size 4 and size 2 hooks?
i use size 4 in almost ever video on this channel that is not a boilie video. For me this hook is perfect for carp from 2 to 30 pounds. Size 2 i bought just to have them. There was one lake in Illinois where you could consistently catch 30 lb carp, and I got all the 30+ carp in my video from that lake, and i got them particularly for that lake, but then DNR decided to poison all the carp in that lake or someone else did, and carp suddenly vanished from the lake. So I haven't used those hooks in years now. But i have no regrets buying them at those prices as they cost much more now, and these hooks can be used for just about anything in united states
I do not even fish for carp on purpose, but I like your video and explanations. The ending was very abrupt as you suddenly thought abot the length of the video just like you said in the beginning :D Greetings from Germany.
It was the second cut of the ending. The first cut of this video was 28 minutes. I have been trying very hard to keep my videos short and i am cutting things that i think are important, but i just can't get people to watch long videos. I did have 4 more hooks but they were not as interesting anyway.. Always glad to hear from Europe, but particularly from Germany!
i'd buy more than 1 pack , due to small inventories today. Everything i have reviewed and recommended is today out of stock everywhere. It is almost pointless to recommend thing that people cannot even buy.
Nash and Korda don't make hooks, though. The question is who do they buy them from. I believe it is Owner, since they look much like the hook in this video, but with a different shape. And more expensive. But NOT better than this.
Geez that side by side of the korda and gcarp gets me thinking. I have a bunch of korda fox etc hooks for carping, including gcarp though hard to find in canada. Looking over carp stuff in the uk for years you dont see the Gammy gcarp hooks, maybe they are same as korda, maybe Korea made a deal to keep gcarp hard to find over there. Anyhow, great video as always, just getting caught up on your library, just found the playlist section, real cool
i think that's exactly what happened. I would bet a lot of money on it. Finish is identical, performance is identical. And remember, Korda makes no hooks! They just order from somewhere. Where?
Actually the carp is probably smarter than some americans period!! Have you seen some of these crazies running loose these days?....lol. Great video Victor. I'm going to look for those next time at Cabelas / Bass Pro. That's quite a collections of hooks. Your videro's always make me want to get out and fish.
Great video once again I expected nothing less from you! I can't wait for your upcoming rig video. I'm still annoyed how people complain about videos being too long, any avid fishermen should already know about patience. I'm guessing it's true that Americans have such short attention spam, good thing I'm only half American Haha. I do wish you went more in depth on why certain hook shapes are bad for carp fishing.
Was expecting some exotic hook brand. Grammies are pretty popular here in BC for salmon and trout where we use the octopus style which look very similar to the carp specialist type.
I would never fish weeds. Waste of time. People who don't like u will tell u some stupid rigs like zig-rig and pop up rigs but those rigs are stupid and people only give them to you because they hate you and want you to waste your day. Get a rod with braid so u have good sensitivity and tie a lead with no hooks or rigs. Then cast it and drag it on the bottom until you find a nice patch of bottom with no weeds and no sand and no rocks. You need clean and soft bottom. Fishing in weeds its a waste of time. Maybe you can still catch some fish here and there but i have better things to do than waste my time on that
as an European that fish for carp and other species for more then 30 yrs i can say that hooks with no eye r used only for mono or fluor lines and mostly for live bait like magots and some corn, for carpfishing we allways use hooks with eye so we can do all the carpfishing rigs with no probs
Worthy of a view and a like but I'll stick cheap Eagle Claws for carp. As for big cats I do tend to run Gamakatsu octopus hooks but I always keep the door open with other brands and styles of hooks. Same goes for all available fish in my area. Most are universal really. One of my largest recent carp wasn't my target species but I reeled her in on cut carp and a 4/0 Kahle hook. I didn't see that coming but I got a good hook up and fantastic fight in heavy current. Had I been targeting carp both bait and hook as well as line would have been entirely different but good accidents happen. Time on the water matters most.
I have hooked 3 big carp but have never managed to land them. they have either come of the hook, broken my line or taken my hook and line. I will take your advice , get the right hook, increase the line size and let you know next time how I go.
I am not a big fan of increasing the line size. Makes fishing nasty. 0.30mm line is enough for carp. More important than line is inspect your line at the beginning of the trip for nicks and damage from transportation or from prior trips. Then check your drag to make sure it is ready to pay line. When people say the fish broke their line it always means one of two things: 1. their line was damaged, 2. their drag was too tight. Maybe a musky can cut your line with teeth, but not carp...
my favorite hook is eagle claw L042 size 2. goes all the way through the jaw, turns over and a lot of times creates a second hook hold. some people don't like it because of the mouth damage.. but this is america and i am catching wild fish so i do not care. having said all of this.. i believe i will at least try the g-carp hooks.
Spade! Right! Forgot that. I use 0.30 or 0.32 mono on all my carp reels, i don't care what pound the line happens to be. For me that is the perfect diameter. I use 50 lb braid just to tie my hook. I like the softness/stiffness of 50 lb. Thinner is too soft for me. It's not like it matters how thick it is, because it is perfect green color.
Hit that like before even watching the video. I know you are about to drop some knowledge. I wonder if it's a hook I can just buy domestically, the suspense is killing me.
where do u live? U can buy directly from Gamakatsu in most countries. I provided links below. They are pretty cheap, even if u pay shipping they still cheap.
