As an old man who also grew up with this franchise, part of me wants to hate the fact that you can make AI-generated voice clips of the anime narrator now, but honestly, hearing Rodger Parsons say _"IT'S JUST A GODDAMN BIRD"_ is both amusing and incredibly satisfying.
Pikachu’s name is a pun of sort in Japan. “Chu” is the onomatopoeia for the sound that a mouse makes, and “Pika” is the sound of sparking electricity. So Pikachu’s name roughly translates to “Sparksqueak”

The name apparently came first before Satoshi Tajiri decided it was an Electric Mouse. The original designer, Atsuko Nishida, was initially inspired by squirrels and dumplings. "Chu" was added more because of its size, and it had a nice ring.

The vocoded announcer voices make this funnier than it has to be for what they're saying
The other reason Pyschic was so OP in Gen 1 was because the types that were meant to be effective against them were either weak bugs or ghosts that had only one ghost move, lick, and they screwed the programming and it didn't work on psychics. Beedrill had the most powerful bug move at the time and it was bug poison so it would get easily downed by psychic types.
hence Gen 2 introduced Steel and Dark, they were indirect nerfs to Psychic (a defensively resistant and offensively stronger duo of types) while buffing Fighting types (two weakness to fighting type? Oh my!) as well as Fire ad Bug. (two more types they can wipe the floor with)
From what I’ve heard, they couldn’t call Pokémon “Pocket Monsters” over here cause that sort of name was used for the toyline Monster In My Pocket, so they just shortened it down to Pokémon. Also very good video, Stuart.
Definitely casting a vote for the Pokemon Stadium review. It's fun watching people react to that game's bullshit difficulty.
I read this in the voice of the Pokemon Stadium announcer and I have no regrets about that.
I wonder what those Stadium and anime announcer voices would have sounded like if they were sentence-mixed, rather than A.I. voiced.
Okay, to be fair, Pokemon wasn't the first RPG to have monsters battle each other, just kinda the first to have it's own world.
I mean, Demons are monsters too, so I'm counting SMT as the actual first one. Then there was Dino Rex which was basically Pokemon but with dinosaurs and a fighting game.

Terrific video, Stu. Pokemon truly was inescapable back in the 90s, even down here in the Land of Oz. Unfortunately, I was in the minority as a kid: I couldn't STAND Pookymeng back in those days. Probably because my introduction to it was through the TV show, which I thought was annoying as hell. I also remember the trading cards were a popular fad for a time on the school yard, but were quickly banned for causing real, physical fights. You joke about cockfighting, but the only critters I remember beating the living tar out of each other back then were the children!
For me (and probably a lot of others in the U.S.), Pokemon cards got banned in our schools, not for fighting, but because they were a "distraction".

well that was a nice vid. my favorite odd thing about Cinnabar island that im sure nobody really thinks about is the lack of the volcano.
the island is supposed to be known for having a volcano, but it not in the first game or the remake and its BARELY there in the 2nd remake with Let's Go, but at least they tried. i feel it would have been better that they let you be able to see it from a different angle, though i wouldnt be surprised if all that you see in Let's Go was just the base of the mountain and nothing else is modeled.

This was great and really funny! I would love to you see take your team to Pokémon Stadium one day. I also got the reference behind "Vaginal Vomiting". I've followed your YTP stuff in the past after all.
Also, I like the idea of the monsters you recruit in Deltarune being possibly playable for later chapters to encourage multiple playthroughs. You bet people would want to play with Tasque Manager in a heartbeat. Same here, but I lust for Clover more. I think the concept sadly might be too much for Game Maker Studio to handle unless Toby proves me wrong, he's pulled off amazing shit with the engine so far but I know the recruited monsters are going to play into the game's narrative somehow. I just know it.

Pokemon's pronunciation to me is less confusing than how generation is abbreviated. It's Gen 1, rather than the more abbreviated G1 like Transformers.
Managed to snag a copy of original Silver earlier this year, and having grown up from FireRed and forward, there’s something strangely familiar and yet also antiquated about older Pokémon games. The newer ones feel significantly better to play, absolutely - but there’s this strange charm about the simplicity of the older ones.
Hoping to see you chat more about these in the future, this was a fun one!

I'm decidedly in that gen1/2 crowd so this was a treat and a half. Gotta love gen1's sprites, though. Even the mightiest have humble beginnings.
Man, this was a trip down memory lane. I had Blue as my first Pokemon game, and played the shit out of it as a kid. I believe I always started with Bulbasaur.
Also, the AI-generated/vocoded voices of the narrator and tournament announcer from the show were fucking hilarious.

You can use a glitch similar to the MissingNo. glitch to catch Safari Zone Pokemon freely. Just go into the area of the Safari Zone that has the Pokemon you want to catch, then use an Escape Rope to get out, and immediately fly to Cinnabar Island and surf on the eastern coast so your sprite looks like it's half on land, half on water, and you'll find Pokemon from the Safari Zone. This actually works with any area, though I don't think you can find static encounters this way, so no getting multiple legendaries.

That is, if you're using S-Video, RGB or Component cables.
I have a CRT with Component inputs and SNES games look great there. It's like the best of both the authentic CRT experience with the emulator's super-clean appearance.
Component cables basically make SNES games look DVD-quality.

One of the things I despised about Pokemon are the Pokemon that only evolve by trading. Imagine training one of your favorite Pokemon And the oy way to get it to evolve is by giving all that hard work to someone else.

My folks use to put their living room TV on floor, it was one those wooden style ones and when that broke they just stock a another TV on top of that one. Later in early 2000's they gotten an back projectiles TV's, where the bottom was huge speaks and top was huge screen. It wasn't until that broke down in 2019 where they finally gotten a TV stand and put a led TV on it. What does this have to do with Pokemon? Nothing, I just like to hear myself talk like the old fart that I am lol

lance when he uses draganair line only knows agility as a psychic move which is none attacking and saying as he has the more advance trainer ai. he will only spam that move against beedrill, so beedrill easily beats dragonite also. your level also doesnt really matter there cause ai dont run out of pp in this generation either so. a lvl 1 beedrill will never be attacked by them specifically.
