NEW MERCH STORE IS ONLINE

Today. Stu explores the Turbografx 16 - PC Engine and finds some of the most hilarious and bad games known to man that makes it no wonder the console didn't survive long. Having to stand up against the NES/Famicom and the Genesis/Megadrive, it was too little too late for America

Man... I'm 39 and I'M laughing at "pipi." You gotta grow old but you don't gotta grow up. **gigglesnort**
21:36 I'll have you know I only spent $1,350 on my Supra this month.
...and installed $3,500 worth of parts, LOOK YOU KNOW I WAS TRYING TO PROVE YOU WRONG HERE!
Fun fact about the life loss text in Toilet Kids: it’s a pun on the word for clumsy (ヘタクソ, hetakuso) and the word for shit (クソ, kuso). Cursed knowledge that had to be shared.
I think more people remember "Turbografx 16" as the unreleased Kanye mixtape more than as a game console.
This is probably the most you've laughed in a video, and it's tons of fun to listen to
I really appreciate that Konami released the TurboGrafx 16 Mini, I'm so thankful to have this. IMO best mini console hands down. Because of this, I have become a huge fan of the TurboGrafx 16.
Ah yes, the Turbografx 16
Back when someone thought they could stand up to Nintendo and Sega.
They did do that tho, in japan at least. The PC Engine as it was called in Japan outsold the Mega Drive by quite a lot over there.
Shockman may be a bad Mega Man clone, but the character himself is a bad Elecman clone.
"Kick the stump chump".
2 minutes later: "How would I know I had to kick above the stump?!"
6:07 - 6.12
Good thing you said most. In the UK, starting in 1990, it came bundled with the rubbish Turtles game that practically saved the machine.
That popup message at 36:29 says "unskilled shit," very nice game
33:07 I practically lost it with these lyrics. 🤣
I sure got the macro Falco reference, even if i'm not a fan. May mercy save me? 😆
Anyway, what a tripping experience. I could not resist at the nichibutsu racing game with the sounds of that car.
Bought one from a video store in 1996 complete in box for $25 when they were getting rid of their TG16 stuff(system was never even used IT WAS BRAND NEW)and about 30 of the well known best games for $3 each and they were totally complete with the paper box the CD style case went in when they were new.Too bad I didn't take care of it,let all my friends borrow it and in 4 years it was completely lost to time within 4 years.I never realized what it would be worth one day all those years ago and constantly regret it.
8:38 Nice to see that Krillian got his own game.
Damn, I remember the OG arcade version of Splatterhouse. NONE of the arcades had it. There was exactly one liquor store in the entire Metro Phoenix Area which had it. And maaaaaaan you had to have a strong stomach for the sheer gore in it. Good times, good times...
The FM Towns version was cool.
One of my favourite pieces of gaming kit, bar none. Probably love it about the same as my Mega Drive!
Also kinda surprised you didn't check out Dungeon Explorer, either of the Legendary Axe games or any of the Bonk's Adventure games. They were all really popular at the time and still hold up now.
Dungeon Explorer is also closer to what the console was meant for. Most of the PC Engine library is JRPG Dungeon Crawlers, it was basically a JRPG machine.
this was a real good video indeed.
also 31:01 its a good thing the game actually told you about the weird thing you needed to do there.
22:10 the crazy bus theme has a new challenger
Just so you know, Yo Bro is based on a planned Beach Boys cartoon, which was gonna be called Camp California. There's another game for TG-16 CD based on it. It's not good, but I find it oddly interesting
I hope you'll be taking a look at it
"Okay, let's be real, NONE of you watching this video have NO IDEA what this thing is."
Me, who still has a TG16 and a handful of games from back when it still being sold in stores: "And I took that personally."
I just found this channel and I am a fan. I am surprised it is under 9k subscribers. It deserves many more.
A lot of references i wish i didn't understand. 10/10 video
Neutopia actually got a sequel that's even better. It's worth chasing down since you seemed to like the first one so much. There was supposed to be a third one but it never got an official release.
...He was obviously being sarcastic and hinting at it being a ripoff of a game that got a series for the past 35 years, The Legend of Zelda.
33:36 Stu slowly turns into Joel
Neutopia may not have become a proper series, but it did get a sequel that improves on the gameplay in every way, so that's nice. A shame that nobody ever tried to copy this in any way, shape or form. Yep. Nobody at all.
Edit: also Rushnerd is a national treasure
Growing up as a poor kid in Brooklyn I was lucky to have even an NES. But one kid from school I knew who had probably less than me SOMEHOW managed to have a TB-16. Maybe his uncle saw it fall off a truck, it was NY in the early 90's after all..just watch 'Everybody Hates Chris' if you need a better understanding 😂
oh man i was actually considering getting a pc engine recently, wasn't expecting to see this lol
great video btw, super entertaining and well paced. i never realized just how bizarre this system's library could get
I do hope he gets nam flashbacks when YS shows up with the hydlide combat but done decently.
I've only emulated this system for bomberman and only bomberman.
My goodness, this is the most I've laughed at any of your videos! I really enjoyed the commentary you had on the music in them, and had that exact same "budget "Under the Sea"" thought that you did when you played that music from the water level in the TaleSpin game. Also, your parody to "Help Me Rhonda" during the bee tornado part of the Yo Bro game just destroyed me!
32:59 Stu's brand new album, "Stu"pendous, coming soon to a store near you!
Really appreciate the effort you put into these, top class mate
subbed for the narration alone. thanks for the lolz man.
Another stellar video. A job well done!
Ah Mashin Hero Wataru.
Great memories playing SRW X
Here at 8.7k. Just wanted to flex that I was here before you blow up, because good sir, you're gonna get the recognition you deserve. Amazing video!
Great job as always
Some good games to recommend: Legendary Axe, any of the three Bonk games, Dragon Egg, Coryoon, just to name a few.
As a "zoomer" learning about the American release of the PC engine is oddly foreign in a way. My only experience with the console is playing it via emulation, so half of the games were Japan only. Games I loved like Legend of Valkyrie or even Bomberman 94, never made it here back in the 90's. If you owned a "TurboGrafx" then, the game library was barren. Hindsight can do a lot to make a failed system seem better.
I love the Turbografx. I never owned one but one of my uncles and a cousin on the other side of my family both got one Christmas of 89.
Every weekend I was at one of their homes playing the Hell out of the T-16. Keith Courage sucked ass. I think between my Cousin and Uncle we played it maybe a grant total of 45 minutes and that's being generous. Luckily they got more than one game with it. Between the two that Christmas I played: Blazing Lasers, The Legendary Axe, Alien Crush and Military Madness. I've been in love with the system ever since. Later releases I got to play like Bonk's Adventure, Bloody Wolf, Shockman and Splatterhouse as well Turbo CD games like YS Book 1 and 2, Lords of Thunder, and Castlevania Rondo of Blood made it permanent. I also lucked out that my relatives would read up about games in magazines and word of mouth from the few fellow T-16 owners they'd come across in stores and managed to avoid the bad and get only the good. It wasn't until RUclips I learned there were games worse than Keith Courage for the system.
As soon as I was able to play them on an emulator I did so in a heartbeat and even have a flash cart with 100 turbografx games on a DS Cart I would play portable anywhere I went.
But I agree, NEC screwed the pooch on this one. If they had just released a black version of the PC Engine in 88 before Sega came out with the Genesis over here and had a more suitable pack in title, didn't piss off E.A., and marketed things better they would have stood a far better chance because it did have the games and enough variety of them to compete with Nintendo and Sega but instead they dropped their pants, bent over, and said: "Just stick it right in! Everyone gets a turn! Like a redwood tree through a glory hole! Have at it!"
I loved Blazing Lazers.
Damn you gained a subscriber i haven't laughed this hard in a long ass time
Working man games deserves more views. It's hilarious. I hope this as a series works NES shit , SNES shit ,SG shit, gba shit the list goes on.
14:56 caught me so off guard for some reason, but that’s really why I’m here, isn’t it?
New Adventure Island,Buster Brothers or Bonk 2 should been the pack in game. And they should have made a cheaper version of the TurboExpress.
29:40 What is this referencing? It sounds awesome and I'd like to know more.
The animation in the background is far away but familiar as well.
Took me a while but I found it. "Dilbert" by cboyardee. He also made Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden, which I was not aware of
I just cant get enough working man games! So Hyped!
Hello! Just stumbled onto your videos for the first time today, and I just really wanted to mention that you have a nice voice!
Terrific video!
Another day another working class man video. What more can a man ask for?
Splatterhouse on Tx16 isnt actually that censored. The console was literally not capable of rendering most of the gore like the decapitations
The censorship only really is removing a cross.
Rick's purple mask likely comes from using japanese Friday the 13th Part III as inspiration, it rendered Jason purple for some reason
3 mins in and I'm already sold with the kidney failure joke lmao
Didn’t figure that the PC-Engine had better PINGUS music than the “song” from the meme
TurboGrafx... A treasure .. in the rough
Edit: man that racecar bit 😂😂😂
it's funny how i got my PC Engine the day you uploaded this, what a coincidence.
0:08 I do~!
Stu: *Zips across the internet in light speed* "Not southernly possible~!"
Me: "But... I'm from the north..."
Turboexpress was the best system of the era. Couldn't play the others while watching Jerry Springer.
What about the SEGA Nomad? 🤔
@@autobotstarscream765 That came out five years later. Late 90's were a different era. 🙂
17:19 God have mercy on my soul! I get the joke! I accidentally found that stuff years ago, not my cup of tea!
I actually do remember this console. I remember reviews for some of its games in gaming magazines. That's really the only way I even knew it existed. I'm curious to know about this Joe Lasco. For... research purposes of course.
I got to go to the pipi room and take out my pipi
You forgot Air Zonk, it's weird but fun shit.
Ever heard of the Monty Mole game that was only on the Famicom with no release in the West at call? Monty no Doki Doki Dai Dassou it was called. Jaleco did it, they also did a port of Knight Lore
17:18 I got the joke.
6:51 20+ Years later this got a 2D animated cartoon series which had it's own impossible now to play mobile sequel really simlar to the Nintendo Switch game they forgot existed called Arms too.
Turbografx 16 was Never Officaly sold in Europe or UK instead they just got some US Consoles and stuck a European/UK power Brick and Plug Socket to them so all the games was still the US versions. It was the only Console to ever get a port of Impossamole which was a UK developed video Game series.
Veigues Tactical Gladiator US Boxart cover is so weird they just re drew the whole art but forgot to give the Mech a Face.
The Modern version of the Turbografx 16 was clearly the Playstation Vita though at Launch it was the most Powerfull Handheld but was promoted just as badly as Turbografx 16 was.
afaik skinhead ain't a slur. just a punk subculture that got appropiated by nazis and now theres like 2 terms, one for the nazies and one for the non nazies but i cant remember which
So.... There actually was a sequel to Neutopia. You should have tried Dungeon Explorer, Ninja Spirit, and Legendary Axe. And save games weren't a thing unless you bought a RAM accessory or the CD add on. Otherwise everything was password based. It also got Space Harrier and Outrun, as well as Batman and Ninja Gaiden clones.
I think what you've failed to consider is that it has turbo grafix
Hey bro. Just subscribed. You sound like you are from the south. Mississippi here lol.
Lol this guy should definitely try to be a stand up comic! 🤣🤘 I think he would be great!
I bought this. My favorite games on this system are legendary axe one and two, and Bonk's adventure 1 and 2
18:01 I do dislike my sewer levels.
19:21 I'm gonna stream this on twitch so I can speedrun the banned any% category!
I only know about Turbografax because of Strong Bad
I saw one in Toys R' Us when I was a kid. I didn't pay much attention to it. My eyes were fixed on the Sega Genesis. The Super Nintendo hadn't even been announced by Nintendo yet.
metal gear solid 2 is notorius with game breaking glitches
Surprised there was no Johnny Turbo mention, maybe for the CD review…
What kind of pain, torture, punishment, you pass to make this video. And how did you survive
I remember this console having so many expensive attachments.
I will say... the Bonk games where really good. I only first learned of this console in college cause a dude had one in my class
also Bravoman had an official animated webseries that was pretty good
Speaking of MyAbandonware, think you could take a look at The Sting! (2001) sometime?
If anything in my humble opinion I feel the Turbografix16 was not given a fair shake in the US and other western markets although there were definitely some classics that came over for example “Gate & Lords of Thunder” series(the soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission). “Ys book 1&2”(again great soundtrack). Star Soldier series. Bonk series. If you enjoy imports & especially if you love shmups the system is definitely fun to collect for. Not to mention my favorite and quite possibly the best Castlevania came out on the TG16 “Rondo of Blood”(again incredible soundtrack). 1 of my favorite retro game systems!!!!.
pc engine had Snatcher. The uncensored version.
Too bad that version had an inferior Chapter 3, no light gun support, and is in Japanese only.
Also, the decapitated corpse has been slightly censored in all Japanese versions. They only show the bloody stump in the SEGA CD English version.
@@HydraSpectre1138 Yeah.
19:55 Pipis Room
12:58 Stuart please, I don't want to goon
I recognize that thing, I helped my buddy get one. Never played it.
nice
I did get the Falco joke, and I got it because God was helping me! :D You're a lot better looking, though. You crack me up, too! Thanks for the laughs. I've been needing them.
Can you do a review on the FM Towns and the FM Towns Marty?
Commenting because it helps the algorithm.
I hate to be the one to ask this but when are the next parts for Looney Tunes games & Scooby Doo games coming out??
no soldier blade? :c
If Benjamin were an ice cream flavor, he'd be pralines and dick. Thanks for the Waynes World joke, continuing to make my week while I'm beyond sick
14:45 😊
Nintendo signed the game publishers to contracts. They could not make games for it in the USA. and Other places as well. Japan was different. The signed the Nintendo tried to do the same there as well. Atari and Nintendo went to Court. And what came out of that was mind blowing. Then other machines was out or coming out. So it never had a chance then. I own one and the CD unit. It not that they refused to take a chance on it. They contractually could not do so.
*TurboComment16 for the algorithm*
Toilet kids? WTF
Nuh Man,i knew everything about this console before watching your video. But of course you don't care about that. I can still give you points for honesty though.
I'm older than you and I laughed way too hard when you said Pipi Room. If you find yourself not laughing at toilet humor then you've grown up and not just grown old. PIPI ROOM! 🤣
Edit: games we could find on newgrounds before 2010 are better than most games for early home consoles.
