When I went to the dealer I was looking for a 540 but they didn't have one and ended up getting this car. The awesomeness of this car has to be driven to be believed, every time I get in it it is a pure joy. The ability of this car to take off like a jet afterburner above 60 is scary and can you give you cardiac arrest. I had a Corvette many years ago and a GTO but those were kid"s toys compared to this thing. And the brakes are absolutely able to stop the car so quickly is amazing. Fantastic radio is better than my home stereo also. When people go all electric they will miss cars like these.
You're absolutely right, and well said. This is one of best sounding machines that invigorates you, performs well dynamically, and leaves you with a smile.
I absolutely love my 2018 M550. It is my perfect car. I have driven hard in a 2002tii, and owned the first 3 series imported to the USA. The M550 is what BMW is meant to be; handling and speed, yet comfortable and luxurious. It is a monster in sheep's clothing!
I'm really going to miss the iDrive 7 setup once BMW converts everything to the iDrive 8 we now see in the 2023 X7 and 7 series. Great looking car and color combo! This M550i also make me wish the 7 series came in short wheelbase. Short wheelbase 750i would be my choice.
I like the nerd stats….what I will say is even though both the m5 and m550 have a 4.4 the n63 is the bottom half of the s63 in the m5 so it’s going to be a lot more reliable than previous generations but the cooling passages are different in s63 which makes sense because it’s expected to stay on a track all day …. It becomes evident when you open the hood on both and look at the cooling hoses especially on the change cooler
Great review, I am currently cross shopping the M550i vs E53amg vs Audi S6... This ones the only V8 on offer, and is $200- $400 cheaper per month. My heart wants the E53, but my pocket wants to stay under $1k/mo. Btw currently driving 2016 F10 535i xdrive M-Sport. Thoughts?
Thank you for the compliment! That’s tough. All three are great cars. The S6 is a stealthy rocket ship, the E53 has a buttery smooth inline-six, and the BMW, like you said, has the monster V8. Depends on your needs. The BMW is the quickest and handles the best of the three, the Merc is the most comfortable, and the Audi does everything well, but does not standout with any one feature. I suppose I would say BMW, or do what do you can to eke out money for the E63.
I’m an ‘experienced engineer’ WTF? I would urge a dose of humility in your review (which was otherwise very good!). All you’re doing is adding to the stereotype that engineers think they’re better than anyone else and therefore entitled. Im not an engineer and my collection would make you blush..

Personally I believes it carries the spirit of the E39 540i, which was so good the M5 was almost shelved.
