Can’t argue but this will always have a special place for me as when my Dad died last year I found an unopened bottle of this in his cupboards, and my brother, my brother in law and I drank the lot whilst reminiscing. So it will always be amplified in my affection because of those memories.

You won't believe this. I just picked up a bottle of this at the only liquor store in my very rural county. I had audited this video and remembered about the flimsy box. Well I did not drop the bottle out of the bottom of the box. It shot out of the top as I carried it to the cash register. Good bottle. Rubberized fakey wood grain floor. SAVED. I shall always remember my first foray out to buy my first single malt.

I must admit this is a whiskey that's a constant in my cabinet and I enjoy it whenever I fancy something a bit lighter. The review and the drop in mark in the decade since the last review is indicative of changing taste and a developed palate. For me 82 is a reasonable score, though personally I'd have marked it a couple higher (which perhaps reflects my much reduced experience with whiskey). I'd never considered adding water to this whiskey as it is so light to begin with, but I may experiment next time. As always Ralphy, you impress with your knowledge, honesty and straightforward style. I adore your videos for their lack of pretentiousness, your good humour and evident huge knowledge of malt.

I'll be honest your little brother brought me here with his crazy blended whisky distilling trick and you gained a subscriber. I'm glad that the first single malt I ever had was Dalwhinnie in Dalwhinnie, and it opened a door I didn't realize was even there. It IS a great beginner's whisky and I think we all need something like that, otherwise maybe there would be less beginners.

Back in the early 1990s I went from Glen Moray 12, Tamnavulin 12 and then to Dalwhinnie 15 as my single malt of choice. I seem to remember it being more syrupy, heather honey back then, along with baked sugared apples and saltanas and spices.
Talking of poor boxes, I had a bottle of Lagavulin 8 fall through the box's bottom last year and I once had a canister of Scapa 14 from the 1990s whose mustard coloured artwork was printed upside down so the metal lid was on the bottom! Potentially very dangerous...

Very nice review. I ran over to my bar while watching and checked the Dalwhinnie packaging and sure enough the cardboard box is indeed very flimsy compared to my other scotch containers. Leave it to you to make such an esoteric but spot on observation; something I wouldn't otherwise have taken notice of. We visited the Dalwhinnie distillery in 2016 and enjoyed the tour and tasting. I agree fully with your evaluation. Thanks for another enjoyable review.

Wow Ralfy you were way too hard on this one. Love this whisky, easy drinking yes but that's OK, does its job well enough for me, and it's no Irish, nothing in common with let's say Redbreast 12 which is nice but so delicate I only get it at this time of year, and more for the memories it evokes, which can matter much more than all the high malt marks from the bothy 😁

  • @ahpadt
    @ahpadt 4 года назад +5

Ralfy you say that the cardbox box on this is flimsy but I just got a Springbank 15 which appears to have an equally flimsy box. I understand all the money goes into the liquid there but I expect better presentation for over £50-60.. :/ While I'm at it... more interesting graphics on the bottle? It looks like I made it. I know it's super traditional but still.

The 12 CS, 15 Rum Wood, and the 18/21 YOs with the cutouts in the box, to show off the bottle, are even worse.

      @danhammer106 4 года назад +1

@LongCity That's exactly right mate, at Springbank they seem to make all the right calls, but in the case of packaging it's like they couldn't care less. I mean maybe it's substance over appearances, but geez - for a bottle like those you mentioned they could at least provide some tougher cardboard.

    • @LongCity

At this point I'll skip it altogether. I'm sure I'd like it, but at the price I'll avoid it. It's one of those things that sooner or later someone will give me as gift, that'll do. At this price there are many 10 or 12-yo integrity bottlings that I'd rather get.

Dalwhinnie, like Cragganmore, is borderline mismanaged in my eyes. Weak casks, a generic overblended profile, and very restricted releases don't make for a positive brand experience.
Dalwhinnie aged in first-fill bourbon casks for 15 years at 50% ABV with no color and no chill filtering would be an absolute stonker. Would take on Balvenie and Glenlivet

Dalwhinnie used to be one of my go-to whiskies. With that wonderful heather honey tone, combined with something almost marine salty mineral.
Not so anymore. For me, it's turned into a vanilla bomb. Bland and boring.
What a great dram this could be in good casks, unchillfiltered, 46%, natural colour.
It so much deserves it, as the location of the distillery is second to none.

The idea that more extreme flavors equal "better" is not always true. Although I do occasionally like the massive peat of some lowlands, or the salinity of the Malts made on the coasts, my FAVORITE Scotch is, hands-down, Dalwhinnie. It has been my go-to scotch for nearly 30 years, and it's the only one I repurchase consistently. It's smoothness, balance, gentle maltiness, and mild sweetness are hallmarks of what makes a ":great Scotch" for me...

    Ralfy, my dear Parasocial Pal,
I've just compared your two reviews of the Dalwhinnie 15, from 3 and 13 years ago, and as a friend, I have to say:
Please consider - what actually changed over that decade? Your 2011 review was cheerful, positive, embracing the distinct charms of the malt; you 2021 review was a bit snarky, and clearly influenced by preconceptions about chill-filtration and artificial color. The original review was a celebration; the latter review was an assassination. Has the whiskey changed that much, or have you, my friend?
    Ralfy,
I've depended on your wisdom and companionship as I've progressed on my whisky journey. I take it as an article of faith that you know more than I will ever know about single malt scotch whisky, and I have greatly benefited from your wealth of knowledge, and your unpretentious way of sharing your delight in the world of whisky. But I was struck by the contrast between those two reviews. I sat with the Dalwhinnie 15 in hand, and your 2011 review resonated with my own experience: This is a delightful dram - "The Honey Dram," as you styled it then - and I was grateful for your vindication of my delight. Then came your 2021 review, and the snark. You took pains to remind me that this malt was chill-filtered, and artificially colored, and therefore suspect. You prepared me to dislike the dram at hand. And ultimately, you rendered a verdict: 82/100, as compared with the 90-point mark you recorded ten years before. Which leaves me to ask: What has really changed over those ten years? Has the malt really degraded so far? Has your palate been so greatly educated that what impressed you before now leaves you cold? Or have your fallen prey to a certain curmudgeonliness - which happens to the best of us (so I'm told). I ask the question with genuine concern, but also with a tongue-in cheek. I have trusted your judgement in these matters since I first stumbled across your channel, and I will continue to do so.
    Yours sincerely,
    Jimbo

I managed in my nearest tiny town ( 23 miles away ) to find a bottle of Dalwhinnie 15 year old for which I paid the ridiculous price of 92 dollars and 13 cents for. It is not a bad whisky. It goes down ok and has a bit of flavor. Hardly any nose however. It's pretty weak sauce. "The Gentle Spirit" indeed. Lesson learned.

For instance, I'd by the Arran 10 at about half the price of the Hazelburn 10 or the Aberlour A'Bunadh at the same price as the HB10 because they are different. In no way will I ever by the Lasanta by Glenmorangie.

Just recently went through a bottle of this. Went quite quickly. Probably because I kept trying to get something more - which never happened.
True: this is ok to introduce someone inexperienced to whisky - or even distillates at all. But that’s about it.

RALFY I bought a bottle of Taliskers 10yo a few years ago and I’m afraid to admit that when I grabbed it out of the back seat of the car it popped through the bottom of the box and became driveway cleaner in less than a second. Piss poor box quality. 😢
PS I was not drinking while driving!

1:28 Benrinnes is definitely not the highest, Ralfy... Checking the publicly accessible Ordnance Survey Map at Walkhighlands.com (my go-to website for fun info about the Scottish hills), one sees Benrinnes distillery sitting between the 210 and 215m altitude lines. To my knowledge, the only other contender for being the highest would be Braes of Glenlivet. Both it and Dalwhinnie sit just above the 350m mark.
As for the map, which you can zoom in and out and fly over by dragging it: www.walkhighlands.co.uk/maps/map3_37cg.shtml

Box was enough to put me off. I’ll have a dram if I come across it in a pub somewhere, but won’t buy a bottle where they cheap out like that. Makes me wonder what else they’ve gone cheap on. Not to mention the chill filtering and colouring.

My second night with this dram. I'm happy. Though it's over priced I think. Pretty sure it is indeed a good beginners offering. Would be easy to drink too much of this stuff. 😉 For the life of me I cannot find the peat many say is supposed to be there and I can taste a bit of peat in Dewers White Label.

I am new to Single Malts, and Dalwhinnie 15 was my first bottle. Later I got myself Caol Ila which I absolutely adore and then Balvenie Double Wood. I got 2 questions for the experts: 1. How am I doing so far? 2. Which bottle should I get next?
Personally, I was thinking about Lagavulin 16. Any other suggestions?

Also agree that you seem to be developing your palate very well. If you can afford it, I'd go for a Caol Ila 18 to see how peat declines and the fruits come more to the fore as the whisky gets older. I'd also sidestep to the Old Ballantruan 10 or 15 to see how mainland peat contrasts with very different coastal Islay peat. One last piece of advice. Don't fall into the trap that so many do, that is that they transition from non peated Speysiders to peated Islays and get stuck there. You'll miss out on some fantastic single malts from Glencadam, Deanston, Benriach, Springbank, Clynelish,....

@@RebMordechaiReviews thanks a lot for the lovely comment and advice. I recently tried Glenlivet 18 in a bar, it was lovely. It was very complex for my beginner palate and I was not able to extract much from it. However, I still found some "remembrance" of peat (not sure if it has peat), fruits, vanilla and interestingly when I burped, I found some nuts, probably almonds. :)

@@sh1vaay321 If you order something in a bar, I wouldn't start assessing the whisky aromas and flavours as there are just too many extraneous smells in your surroundings to make any reliable assessment. Instead, just enjoy it for what it is within the environment. Glenlivet 18 is not peated but, besides picking up surrounding smells (for instance, the person near you could have just finished his cigarette and you picked up the smoke), you might be sensitive to the charred oak barrels which many mistake as peat smoke. With a bit of experience you will learn to tell the difference.
Regarding your burping in public, besides being TMI, despite never frequenting bars myself, I would think that such behaviour is not exactly socially acceptable. Besides (unless you were joking), trying to assess flavour notes of the whisky from your burp is even less accurate than from a glass in a bar, due to extraneous odours emanating from the contents of your stomach.

    • @sh1vaay321
      @sh1vaay321 4 года назад

@@RebMordechaiReviews I have heard that a lot of people do get the smokey note in a non-peated whiskey. I am guessing people who are sensitive to the charred oak barrels might pick up that smokey note. Although the smoke was not the typical medicinal note which you often find in peated whiskeys. So I think you are right about the charred barrels.
I appreciate your concern regarding me burping in public and I kinda find it amusing how you judged my social behavior and thought that I might need some social etiquette lessons lol. I apologize if it was TMI for you, but to be honest, I found it interesting, and since I am a newbie so I thought of sharing this info with the "experts" to get their two cents on this. :)
Oh and just to be clear, I didn't blow the roof off with my burp! :)

g'day ralphy. you mention a drop in quality due to the management of barrels under current policies. Surely in the case of this review, you are seeing the effects of poor barrel selection and management from 15 years ago? Does it mean that the oak or the bourbon in the original cask was of poor quality? It would be great if you could explore these questions a bit more in your extras in the near future for us.

You hide the clivey clicker now Ralfy - I miss seeing it emerge from the side, be almost caressed before being tapped with great satisfaction.
That paper cup you store the marks in - you always seem to struggle getting them out. I think you should return to using the little box they were previously stored in.
I cannot understand why so many people have given this review a thumbs down? It was a perfectly reasonable review with ample justification for the opinions expressed and malt mark given.

I realise its easy to criticise Dalwhinnie but it has its place. You don't always fancy a Mortlach or a cask strength Laphroaig!! I sometimes fancy something lighter and I'll admit to having a soft spot for the signature honeyed fruits this has. Ralfys malt Mark is his opinion. Nothing more or less...

@ralfydotcom. Benrinnes is nowhere near the highest distillery. It’s Braeval in Glenlivet. My handheld GPS puts that distillery higher than Dalwhinnie
Dalwhinnie is only the highest with a visitors centre.

It's sweet and easy. Light. It's the gentle spirit for a reason. Don't buy it for a bruising malt packed scotch. After dinner malt, maybe a half hour before bed. Maybe even with dessert right after dinner. When I make a Rob Roy with blood orange bitters in the Holiday season I use Dalwhinnie 15 often. It takes the rest of the year to drink the bottle. If I have a Dalwhinnie 15 and a Highland Park 12 on the shelf, I'll have finished the Highland Park in a quarter of the time. The Dalwhinnie 15 is frankly too expensive however.

I'll tell you what, this review is spot-on. I tried this recently in a bar and nothing stood out. So generic. 20 years ago this along with Cragganmore 12 was a stunner. Not anymore.
If you like bland and plain you should try the Balblair 12. Now that is insipid. Nice and gentle but sooo boring. If anybody wants to swap half a bottle of Balblair 12, let me know.

Many thanks for the review. The local Hillsboro, Virginia FFWCS (Fly Fishers Whiskey and Cigar Society) met earlier this week to taste a new bottle of the Dalwhinnie 15. As you stated the box is a mess, but given that we all have nimble fingers from tying on very small flies using very small knots, the bottle stayed in tact. Regarding our tasting: we all agree that it reminds us of an Irish whiskey, light with a floral nose. Also, your suggestion of adding a wee bit of water was excellent. It definitely opened up the dram. Bottom line: we agree with your 80 malt rating. Many thanks for all the reviews.
