I used to do a fuck ton of these, it DRAMATICALLY improves the DL. I did them a bit heavier than recommended but It's like if you can break the floor you'll ALWAYS finish the lift if you master this.
Not necessarily, since often the reason for a ”weak lockout” is bad positioning and weakness off of the floor. If your back starts to get rounded and compromised in the beginning, then this exercise is not gonna do a whole lot to address the issue, which might be weak quads and leg drive. Or if you want to keep deadlifting with rounded back to some extent, you should practice locking out the spine from the rounded position.
@@moistmayonese1205 depends some people round their upper back specifically to trade lockout strength for strength of the floor cor them this would help alot
Did these this morning after watching the video yesterday and definitely feel my hamstrings and glutes fired up. I will be doing these more often. Thanks Dave for sharing these. Just what the Dr ordered to improve my Deadlifts.
Played around with these last year and added some light band tension. No idea if that’s advisable but felt really good and made it easier to keep rhythm

@@jabari8950 Yes, an RDL goes lower and puts more of the load onto you back due to lower bar movement the extra bend at waist compared to more bend at the knee with this movement. Since my glutes are not the weakpoint in my deadlift this movement won't do as much for me as an RDL will. My sticking point is between upper calf and mid knee. Once I clear the kneecap my glutes and hamstrings carry me through.
Didn't know these had a name, we used to do them all the time in the army. These and box steps with heavy weight on your back were our main accessories.
I'm guessing this is not taxing the traps very much because of the lighter weight. Regular RDLs in the 6-10 did wonders for my hamstring and glutes, but it also blasted my traps.
When I do romanian deadlifts, I sometimes do this. I didn't realize it had a name. When I thought about it, It's kind of like a kettlebell swing push with your hips and squeeze glutes.
I was watching this video today while I was sitting in a beautiful park with some children playing around me. Now I don't know why I'm in jail... I mean all I did was just practise this form without a barbell?!?!
These just seem like hang clean pulls, minus the triple extension and shrug. Why wouldn't coaches/athletes prefer to use the full hang clean pull (or any clean pull variation) for training power/explosiveness?
Upon further consideration, clean pulls and their variations all target the anterior chain, so I see how the Dimmel deadlift differs. Even so, what utility does explosiveness in the posterior chain obtained from the dimmel deadlift provide that Olympic movements would not already provide?
This is the Romainian Deadlift. This is the only Deadlift I use. I can't see the point of lifting a massive weight off the floor and risking injury unless you aspire to be a Power Lifter. At the top of the lift I also do a shrug which saves having to do them seperately. Two for the price of one. More bang for your buck!
Like any supplemental lift selection, the answer is relative to your goals, specificity, weaknesses. Generally speaking, personally, I would program these on DL Day #2 as a secondary movement after RDLs.
Your knees should be in the same position as an arched back good morning. When the bar is at the knees, you should feel a TON of tension in the hamstrings and glutes.
That's pretty much how I've been doing RDLs for the past few years, got me to a 600 pound deadlift at 20 years old, 100% drug free, no supplements either.

Movement looks extremely similar to kettlebell swings imo.

Interesting and useful. It’s an explosive RDL or barbell kettlebell swing.
Yeah I thought the same. It's like deadlift specific kettlebell swing 😄
I’m deadlifting on Thursday, definitely doing this for supplemental work
30-40% people!! It's an fast move! No way to do this with heavy. Even if you think you can. Back needs to be protected all the time
So a Romanian deadlift variation that shifts some of the load from back to hamstrings.
legit question, how old is this video

Similar to a KB swing 👍
Yup exactly what I was thinking
Right, it makes Dan John's stuff make more since to me. * sence *
Except you don’t have the weight or the specificity.
Great stuff from the old days. Thank you very much
It’s a Romanian deadlift, done more explosively. Anybody that’s serious about lifting is already doing these and/or good mornings.
Or a kettlebell swing done with a barbell.
If you spot someone doing this exercise, always stand directly behind them.

RDL’s and good mornings are a staple for me. Piriformis is no joke.
Wym piriformis. What about it?
Took a week of from the gym and my piriformis was flaring up. After my lower day today with good mornings, it feels as good as new!

Is this not like a RDL just with less range of motion???
Basically a speed RDL then? I’ll post a video on my channel of me butchering it tomorrow 👍🏽
RDLs are usually brought down closer to the floor.
@@StrengthHacksCoaching not mine 😂 mine basically look like this
From other ex-Westsiders I've always thought of this being more of a "fast partial deadlift" rather than being more hip dominant like a RDL
Holy shit Dave deadlifting!!!
Funny, I actually watched this exact video, but then the original upload like two weeks ago
Very interesting exercise, definitely gonna implement it.
What makes this different than a Romanian DL is jt just speed/tempo?
So an explosive RDL right ?
Seems like the same idea as kettlebell swing but with a barbell
Rip big matt
So basically a rack pull without the rack. Ingenious would of never crossed my mind lol
Is this similar to a swing but more specific to powerlifting?
Is it good for lower back problems?
Other than tempo I am genuinely curious how this is different from a Romanian deadlift?
Is that any different to RDL?
Looks Like an Olympic weight lifting exercise.
Forgotten? I have never stopped doing these.
So a Romanian Dead Lift variation?
I do kettlebell swings instead
Been doing these out of the rack forever. Always just figured it was kind of a partial Romanian

Should the knee be like an RDl or SLDL?
Your knees should be in the same position as an arched back good morning. When the bar is at the knees, you should feel a TON of tension in the hamstrings and glutes.
More like rdl
