I recently realized that in older Windows 10 versions, they used to have the recovery partition first. Not sure why but you need to do something slightly different to fix the error. In that case, you could either use a program to move the recovery partition after the OS partition (which I don't recommend as they can mess up in some cases), or the simple fix which is to just shrink the OS partition by 700MB and make a new recovery partition entirely. It should use the new one when re enabling recovery, however if not, disable recovery again, delete the other recovery (the one before the OS partition), then re enable it again. Note that there will be unallocated space where it used to be but that's okay.
I think I came across this problem and I am unsure of what to do. Could we get a video on this or um help through a discord server or something? I'm kinda scared of messing this up.
After attempting to shrink to 250 I got this prompt: Virtual Disk Service error: The specified shrink size is too big and will cause the volume to be smaller than the minimum volume size.
This is the case I've got. Recovery is fist. In result "free space" is located at the end. So when I recreate recovery partition it does not use this additional space. Is there any manual that explains how to fix it?

Dear Julia, your step - by -step approach to this OBVIOUSLY rampant problem is the only solution I came acrosst that included EVERY keystroke. Even the Microsoft bulletin regarding this MBR snafu misses out on some essential commands. That is to say it's implied I should know about: selecting the correct (desired?) partition and drive before and after certain commands was the key to success. Your commentary, plus the rundown list on the lefthand screen made for a successful disk partition fix. Thank you.

Thanks for the video! After following through the video closely, I got my C drive resized and the recovery partition size increased, and now the update has finally been installed into my computer!

Thank you for ACTUALLY EXPLAINING wtf we're supposed to be doing here. Aside from the idiocy of how this update failure has been going on in the background for 6 months without my knowledge (as you pointed out), I cannot believe how poorly phrased Microsoft's documentation. It says "This update requires 250 MB of free space in the recovery partition to install successfully." Well, I checked and I had double that. It wasn't until watching your video that I understood they need an ADDITIONAL 250 MB of free space. I also would not have know what to do since I had multiple recovery partitions. I never comment on help videos like this but I need you to know that you are amazing, you communicated clearly and you also validated the frustration that I'm feeling about this whole situation. Thank god I have some technical know-how and access to RUclips, because Microsoft has left me in the lurch.

Julia - you're a legend. Much love. To anyone else like me who has one main drive, but has it split into multiple partitions, and ended up with unallocated space in between: 1) Just go into Device Management, right-click the primary C drive, and choose Extend. It will tell you you can only extend by 250mb, do it, then all is normal again. 2) Re-do the instructions in the video, but instead of selecting the C drive partition, choose whichever partition is next to the recovery partition in Device Management. This will create the unallocated space next to the recovery, not in between the other partitions. Follow the rest of the steps as normal. 3) Bob's your auntie. Fixed.
Hey! I followed your steps, but it gave me the error: "You may not shrink OEM, ESP, or recovery partitions, or, offline volumes. The volume you have selected may not be shrunk.Please select another volume and try again." I have only one disk as well.

Thank you so much for this help. I accidentally made my recovery partition 180 GB since I had a ton of unallocated space. I ended up deleting the recovery partition again and expanding my C drive to take at least 160 GB of the unallocated space. I gave the remaining 20 GB to the recovery partition when I remade it. The video was great! No problems at all! (and I found a nifty 160 GB just laying around. Woot!)

I tried this but after i typed in "shrink desired=250 minimum=250", I got the following error: "The specified shrink size is too big and will cause the volume to be smaller than the minimum volume size." How do I fix this? I also realized that my recovery partition is partition 1.

I had to fix mine by going through your video twice, to make sure the partitions on both disks were large enough. Then going and downloading a fresh copy of Windows 10 from Microsoft onto a flash drive and boot it off of that flash drive. It was the only way I could keep it from tripping over the same stick.
5:05 From Microsoft Learn article: 0x8000000000000001 to hide the drive letters and to mark them as required, by using a combination of two attributes: GPT_BASIC_DATA_ATTRIBUTE_NO_DRIVE_LETTER and GPT_ATTRIBUTE_PLATFORM_REQUIRED. So, attribute 0x8000000000000000 hides this partition by not giving that partition a drive letter by default and attribute 0x0000000000000001 tells to OS this partition is required by computer to function properly.

Hi, Jilia! I just discovered your channel. It's great! This problem has annoyed me for months and the script that Microsoft published and then took down (I think) had an error in it and wouldn't run. Thinking converting from MBR to GPT - I didn't know that an old laptop I rebuilt was set up in legacy boot until I watched some other channel's content with a sketchy solution to this issue - I discovered a Microsoft article explaining MBR2GPT and did that successfully. I haven't tried to fix the error yet but I also discovered your tutorial on converting from years ago and indeed I had a new recovery (D) drive so I fixed that using your tip in this video. Thank you so much Tomorrow I'll try to follow along with this tutorial and see if I can fix the update installation issue. Microsoft should have issued a fix. I've waited for months for them to do the right thing. Silly me! Wish me luck and thanks for such useful content!

Hi Julia, great guide! I still have an issue at the end of the process when doing "reagentc /enable" it says "REAGENTC.EXE: The Windows RE image was not found". This might be another issue entirely, do you have any advice?

Excellent vid and walked it through step by step precisely with no horrible BOT generated EDM. Grabbed the text from the MS link to copy pasta, good to go. The only change I needed to make was that the Recovery partition only increased by 2 MB when I used the 250 Value in the shrink command, did it twice and made sure it 250 that was entered, only 2MB increase. Changed the Shrink values to 500, got an added 500MB Shrug, plenty big now! Thanks for the very useful vid!

I tried this but after i typed in "shrink desired=250 minimum=250", I got the following error:
"The specified shrink size is too big and will cause the volume to be
smaller than the minimum volume size."
How do I fix this?
I also realized that my recovery partition is partition 1.
Thats the same error I got as well.
My follow up video is about to be out and it goes over that issue.

Thank you for this guide. I did not expect (and trust) that Windows update would require such kind of console using but it is real and it really worked. Your video directed me to official Windows guides and also because of you I didn't make one mistake during partition shrinking (I almost shrunk recovery partition instead of Primary partition - but just before I sent the command in console I remembered what you said in the video). I had to fix mine by going through your video twice, to make sure the partitions on both disks were large enough. Then going and downloading a fresh copy of Windows 10 from Microsoft onto a flash drive and boot it off of that flash drive. It was the only way I could keep it from tripping over the same stick.
Did you have to reinstall Windows?

0x8000000000000001 to hide the drive letters and to mark them as required, by using a combination of two attributes: GPT_BASIC_DATA_ATTRIBUTE_NO_DRIVE_LETTER and GPT_ATTRIBUTE_PLATFORM_REQUIRED.
So, attribute 0x8000000000000000 hides this partition by not giving that partition a drive letter by default and attribute 0x0000000000000001 tells to OS this partition is required by computer to function properly.

Hi, Jilia! I just discovered your channel. It's great! This problem has annoyed me for months and the script that Microsoft published and then took down (I think) had an error in it and wouldn't run. Thinking converting from MBR to GPT - I didn't know that an old laptop I rebuilt was set up in legacy boot until I watched some other channel's content with a sketchy solution to this issue - I discovered a Microsoft article explaining MBR2GPT and did that successfully. I haven't tried to fix the error yet but I also discovered your tutorial on converting from years ago and indeed I had a new recovery (D) drive so I fixed that using your tip in this video. Thank you so much Tomorrow I'll try to follow along with this tutorial and see if I can fix the update installation issue. Microsoft should have issued a fix. I've waited for months for them to do the right thing. Silly me! Wish me luck and thanks for such useful content!

Thanks for your encouraging reply! I think Microsoft has now said that they won't fix it. I wound up using MiniTool Partition Wizard to resize the recovery partition. It seemed a little less likely for me to screw that up. I'm up to date now. Thanks again!

Hi Julia, great guide! I still have an issue at the end of the process when doing "reagentc /enable" it says "REAGENTC.EXE: The Windows RE image was not found". This might be another issue entirely, do you have any advice?

Thanks a bunch for this tutorial! Got that pesky error away finally. I had the update ignored a while back but it came back around after fiddling with some update stuff to keep me in Win 10 after deciding to not install Win 11 after I clicked the go-ahead. Oh well. Looked a bit daunting after a google search but came across your vid. w00t!

Excellent vid and walked it through step by step precisely with no horrible BOT generated EDM. Grabbed the text from the MS link to copy pasta, good to go. The only change I needed to make was that the Recovery partition only increased by 2 MB when I used the 250 Value in the shrink command, did it twice and made sure it 250 that was entered, only 2MB increase. Changed the Shrink values to 500, got an added 500MB Shrug, plenty big now! Thanks for the very useful vid!
