  • Dirt cheap 45' abandoned nostalgic sailboat!! In this episode first Brian tests the engine for a head gasket leak. It took several attempts to get results. The results were hopeful. After the engine work we take off to the yard to look at an abandoned old sailboat. This boat is perfect for someone who wants a project boat and has lots of time and money.

    I bought a 53 foot sailboat that caught fire and cracked the the haul. I spent two years fixing it. Replacing all the hydraulic pump gaskets and hoses. The wood woodwork in the master cabin. I got her sea ready and never got her out. Things happen in life and ended up selling her to pay for my girlfriend medical treatment. Much good that didn't. She ended up passing on after 3 years battle. Watching theses videos being back my old memoirs and my dream of sailing around the world. Thanks for sharing your video. Funny how somethings are more important than other things at the time. My friends as me would I have done something different if I could go back in time. I tell them I never ever regretted my decision of selling my boat. I got 3 extra years that I wouldn't of had if I didn't help. So some dreams aren't meant to be. Even if it was so close.

    You can generally get a boat in this condition for free ($100,000🤯). My friend looked at one in the same condition for $15,000. Boat yards are happy to avoid the high cost of disposal. Looks like your raw water cooling system could be mixing with engine coolant, possibly through a damaged heat exchanger. You will know the boat well by the time your done tho. Lots of luck! 🙂

    Sounds like a head gasket or you have a leak between the raw water and coolant side of your heat exchanger. Since your coolant runs at about 15 psi and raw water is not pressurized. Coolant can be pushed to the raw water side and go overboard

    Cool boat tour and I appreciate your work ethic and determination to just, do the work that needs to be done. That is great to see nowadays. On the engine I'm not sure what your pumping into the water with your exhaust but seeing the condition of the heat exchanger, I wouldn't start that engine again without pulling the cylinder head. A milky liquid is usually emulsified oil or perhaps diesel. The antifreeze is going somewhere and removing the cylinder head will most likely tell you what's going on pluse it will go a long way to gaining confidence in the engine going forward. Good luck I look forward to your future videos. P.S. I would stop pumping that liquid into the water

      @archer721 Год назад +2

      Just because you’re not getting exhaust gasses into the cooling system doesn’t mean you don’t have a head gasket leak! - but I would actually be more confident that it’s still a problem with the heat exchanger. No coolant in the oil, no exhaust in the cooling system…
      it’s likely still blowing out the exhaust somewhere…? and from the looks of the sludge coming out of the exhaust… that’s where I would be searching. - Though I do agree that pulling the head is a good idea and will reveal many possible hidden issues that could float to the surface in the middle of the sea at an extremely difficult moment! - when you are off shore there is never a good time for your engine to fail)
      As much as it sucks… I’d pull the head.

    Sorry to leave two comments, but it just dawned on me that I had a tractor (here on the farm) that seemed to be losing coolant (anti-freeze) and I couldn't figure out where it was going. Also, now and then, I'd see what I thought was an 'oil sheen' on the coolant when I'd remove the radiator cap. I had a small leak in one of the radiator tubes, so I thought that was the problem and a problem like that can wait when hay season is pressing. The tractor still ran well and I still got a another season out of her (John Deere) and eventually, I decided to change the oil. When I popped the oil plug, water gushed out. About a quart or more. Then the oil. At that point, I figured out where the coolant was going -- besides the tiny leak in the radiator. The engine rebuild cost me around $5k, and damned near another $5k for new tires and brakes. (It's a bitch baling hay on hillsides with a 1960's kick baler and no brakes -- but we were 'farm poor' back then.) Anyway, I had a neighbor who had the same problem with his tractor, but had kids that were mechanical geniuses and could do their own overhaul. Split a big-assed tractor right in half with jacks and blocks in their barn! They'd had the same problem. They fixed theirs (an even bigger tractor than mine) and ran a season or so and then the same thing happened to them again. Water in the oil. We thought it all out and figured that I didn't have the same problem because I was using premixed "John Deere Coolant" (because of the engine overhaul warranty) and they'd been using coolant they had to mix with water. The water was from their well. (As was mine, before my overhaul.) Anyway, they got it all tested out and found that it was the mineralization in the water that had eaten away one of the new cylinder sleeves they'd installed during their overhaul. Apparently, the normal cavitation combined with the mineralized well water tends to pick the weakest spot in a cylinder sleeve and just keeps working on it until it finally grinds through. Which then provides the opening for the oil to coolant mixture to start happening. So, if it were me in your situation, I'd let things sit for a few days and then either change the oil completely and see what settles out, or let about a pint out and see if there's any trace of water there. I'd go further, too, and find out where I could send that oil sample to in order to see if there were any other engine contaminants in it. For a "band-aid" or "quick fix," I'd probably just drain the engine coolant and replace it with something I knew had no possibility of mineralized water (such as "premixed" or mixed with distilled water) and some reasonable amount of "radiator leak sealer," which may or may not work, given the pressure in the cylinders as the engine fires. If there's a "lesson" for any boater (or farmer) here with diesel engines -- don't use tap water if you're mixing dilution-type antifreeze. That nickle you saved by not buying reputable pre-mixed, may be costing you a lot more in the end if it results in an engine overhaul.

    The only real way to find out if there is water or antifreeze in the oil, other than getting it tested, is to put a drop on a piece of paper, the oil will just be a drop and the water will soak/spread out on the paper. I agree with others that the "milky" substance in the water is antifreeze either mixing with the oil or diesel. The other boat that has been sitting for 20 years, will sit another 20 unless someone can get it dirt cheap (less than the $4K you mentioned) or just was to fall completely in love with it. It needs EVERYTHING and would be a near impossible task for one person and without pros and the money for it. I don't even have to look at it to KNOW there is rot under that fiberglass. Peeling off the fiberglass would be a task not for the faint of heart.

    • @sprezzatura8755
      @sprezzatura8755 Год назад +1

      I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the fiberglass needs to be stripped away. Step one is to determine how it was constructed. If it was striped plank or cold molded it should not be too difficult to recommission. Some of the finest and most expensive new yachts are built using cold molded triple plank epoxy saturated construction. Look at Spirit yachts from the recent James Bond films. These composite boats are the best of both worlds. The natural flotation and strength of wood combined with the lower maintenance of fiberglass boats . It's a winning combination but far too expensive for production boats. The keel bolts on this boat should probably be replaced anyway and in the process the keel itself gets inspected and serviced as required. It would be great to get a full profile shot of the boat, possibly from the deck of another boat on the hard, or via drone. It's hard to see what you are working with. It's an interesting boat that is not a cookie cutter Tupperware or Clorox bottle. It might be very much worth saving. But be very picky. There are lots of old boats out there to fix up. Pick the right boat.

Simply fixing your tired diesel does nothing for the tine/money investment you are putting in , whereas a new BETA will immediately increase her worth by the same amount you spend on it. @@sailingsvbohemian1464 That pressure tester kit originally came with some thick rubber washers that fit in the coolant filler neck. Probably lost in the rental process. Some filler necks aren't 3/4" deep, some are 1" deep, (or in some cases, some other dimension), thus the washers are required to allow the centre spring loaded part of the tester cap to seal. Worth the minute it takes to measure. It is also quite possible the pressure tester is defective, it is a rental tool.
      The block tester will indicate the presence of combustion gasses in the cooling system, as is found in some types of cylinder head gasket failures, but will not help diagnosing, for instance, a crack in the cylinder head in an exhaust port, a cracked block, a leak in the heat exchanger, a breach in the water heater, (this one can cause an awful death) or a loose hose clamp.
      The pressure tester will lose pressure as the coolant is pushed out, then it is a matter of looking for where it is being pushed out.

That one was actually my first choice, and is about the same distance from Fells as Summit North. (About 40 mi. or so.) But my plan is to try to find a place on the Patapsco R. and keep my other boat, a Westerly Centaur, at Fells, and use it to go back and forth to work on the schooner. I do plan to do a LOT of gunkholing in the little boat, so I may get up your way sometime around mid-summer. Thanks for the reply!

    You can also put presure on your cooling system, if the presure drops, there is a leak, most likely in your new exchanger, have it tested.
    And that wooden boat is beautiful, maybe mr Musk has enough money to restore it

      Good morning, i wanted to keep you posted on that abandoned boat i had asked you about, i have been calling the Marina but the girl who answers doesn't really know about the boat, so I'm hoping that maybe i can get ahold of the owner of the Marina and he will know, in your personal opinion do you think it's a boat that's worth rebuilding, from what your video showed i think it is with alot of work, but that's what I do for a living, i remodel homes and I've been a mechanic nearly all my life, take care Wayne Parry

    Some FREE boats are still too expensive ! I hope all is well with you guys, I hate to see anyone being burned by some of the criminal dealers in the boat business ! I have seen so many people pay far too much for a boat that should have been sunk . I hope that ANYONE thinking of buying an big old boat sees your video's and learns to think it through and not get dreamy eyed in the presence of the many unscrupulous people in the marine industry. I hope you and your lovely family survive this without too much aggravation. All my best wishes ❤️
