    Don't forget that the B+ for the pix IF chain and tuner sometimes comes off the cathode of the sound output tube. The tube doubles as a sort of series-pass voltage regulator. If that tube is weak you may still get some audio, but the B+ getting to the RF/IF stages will be way too low to get things going.

    I would love to see you get an old dirty junker working, then spray it down with a degreaser, spray it down with a garden hose, then let it dry out in the sun for a few days. then turn it on, and see how resilient it is. I figure if some of your sets survived sitting in desert rainstorms for years, it should survive a reckless cleaning

    Well done so far!
    I look forward to the Receiver Section being brought back to life as well.
    It's a shame that there's nothing on the air for it to receive.
    I suppose in this brave new world where Picture Tubes and Synch Pulses and so on have been left behind there is no way to learn about Modern T.V. Sets.
    You would need the incentive of gainful employment in that area to make this happen so really our story ends along with the end of the All Electronic (Cathode Ray) Analogue Era.

When Bill does a car review he looks at inside the trunk and makes a comment about infants in the trunk, if there's enough room in back seats for the Canadians to be happy, the storage compartments for various weapons or drugs. shango can you explain what cutoff means for the picture tube, I know emission, but you always mention that while testing them

    • @kuebbisch
      @kuebbisch 3 года назад

      Cutoff voltage is the G1 (control grid) bias voltage for the electron gun which creates a black picture. On top of this bias voltage the video signal is applied and if everything is working correctly you get a picture with correct saturation. If the cutoff voltage is out of range or not linear then you will get no picture or a picture with no or too much saturation/contrast. Hollow state audio people call that just the "bias" and write many and long posts on forums on where to set it to get the rights sound 😛 It is just establishing the operating point of any tube.

    • @boardernut
      @boardernut 3 года назад

      @@kuebbisch right, makes sense I'm guessing then picture tubes should have what we call sharp cut-off G1 as in a pentode for audio, I' m wondering if the grid can be somehow damaged after many years of use or something like that

    • @kuebbisch
      @kuebbisch 3 года назад +1

      @@boardernut Yes, even if a picture tube is more like a triode, due to the construction the electron gun acts like a sharp cut-off tube. The control grid is a ring in front of the cathode and so has a uniform spacing and thus hopefully a linear relationship between control grid voltage and beam current (aka. intensity or brightness on the screen). Measuring this voltage is the same as matching audio tubes for same cathode current when used in push-pull amplifiers (without independet bias control).
      It is impractical to directly measure beam current (cathode current) in picture tubes due to the high voltage needed to achive the 0.8 - 1 mA most picture tubes run. Even if you achive that current, then you burnt the phosphor in the middle of the screen because the tube tester has no deflection 😁 So measuring bias voltage at cutoff/black level it is...

      Daves is just a trade meter, a rabranded UEI that is not better that UNITs on the same range. It was testes extensively on a 6 part vid by a guy (I dont ecall his name now, but he has been doing this tests to several multimeters). It got issues, wont past some HV tests, protections are not up to the job .... nothing wrong with it. But each time Dave get his hand in an UNIT it turns in such a drama ... and his prime product was not any better. I had UT61D for four years, used mostly to repair ATX PSU, dropped it several times .... ticking like new (only issue were the banana jacks, pretty cheap and crappy). Dave fails to understand that in some places people cant afford 250 dollar meter. Is the UT61D unsafe. Yes, probably .... you need to be carefull. PERIOD. Im not expecting to pay 10 to 20 times more to use a DMM in careless way and just because it wont pop it will turn into a paperweight.

      I use a Uni-T U61D as a daily meter for most things but I do have a fluke 179 and 863 when I need something with a CAT4 rating (industrial use) or something with a quick response, as far as accuracy goes they're all pretty good and stay within spec, the best thing about the Uni-T is price and when your a hobbyist that kind of matters alot.
